Albiol press conference

Raul Albiol said the team is focused on doing its best to win La Liga.

"We've been working hard to win the league since August"

Looking ahead:

Wednesday was tough and I couldn’t sleep after the match. But you have to get up the following day and train hard for Sunday’s match. We have no choice but to focus on La Liga. We’ve worked very hard to give up now. We’ll have to give our all on Sunday. I only think about the league now. It’s all there’s left for us.

Lyon:

We missed many chances in the first half of our game against Lyonnais. We gave them room to breahe in the second half and they used it. They were more efficient in attack than us. They grabbed their chance and knocked us out. Our game broke down slightly in the second part. There were more individual efforts. That was because the team wasn’t working well collectively, not because some players preferred to try things on their own. We all get along very well and we will prove it. Hard times show if players form a proper team or not.

Morale:

It’s normal for us to be sad because we were excited about playing the final at the Bernabeu. It was a hard blow. We must now be intelligent and realise we’ve been working hard to win the league title since August. It is a very tight competition and we can’t throw all that away now. We have to prove we are united and capable of winning the title.

Revenge is sweet

"I'm sorry Ronny," said Higuain. "I'll pass the ball hereafter," he finished with tears trickling down his cheeks. Ronny replied with an evil smile on his face saying "Its OK Pipa, you've a lot to learn amigo," for his hopes of becoming Pichichi gets closer by the day.

Real Madrid have earned great results at the José Zorrilla Stadium, taking points in 28 of their 39 visits. They’ve won 15 and drawn 13 of their games there scoring 32 goals and conceding only 4, netting 2.13 strikes on average per game won and conceding 0.26. The Madridistas score a goal every 42 minutes at the Zorilla and concede one every 337 minutes. In the 1994-95 campaign, the Whites won 5-0 with goals by Zamorano and Raúl, amongst others. The match preceded the Madridistas’ historic 5-0 victory over Barcelona at the Bernabéu that year. Raúl has scored 17 goals against Valladolid so far.

All this won’t matter when the team travels there for Sunday’s 22:00 CET kick-off. Statistics are only to understand what kind of a game it will be and not to decide how good our opponents are. Valladolid are currently relegation threatened but what is also a fact is that they defeated us in the same fixture last season in what was one of the nails in Bernd Schuster’s coffin. They defeated us 1-0. Click here for the Match Report.

This time we must not fail. We must not anger them with calls for a 3-0 win or by saying that they aren’t one of the better European sides. What we must do is go there with only one thing in mind – THREE POINTS. Barça take on Valencia at Camp Nou and thus there is scope for dropping points again. After all Valencia are third in the table. Apart from that there is a small thing called revenge which is sweet when taken with both hands.

Manuel Pellegrini has an almost fully fit squad with only Pepe, Drenthe and Benzema staying away from training. The squad trained with the red ball that will be used this weekend in Spain, England and Italy to help fight AIDS in Africa as part of the RED campaign.

The post-Lyon trauma continued as the morale of the players looked worse than ever before at the Valdabebas – something that is understandable. Ronaldo though is one of the worst affected as the Champions League disappointment  was coupled with the tragic death of his cousin Míchel in a traffic accident.

Marca reports a rift between Higuaín and Ronaldo as the Argentine failed to pass to Ronaldo in the 27th minute and the 58th minute of Wednesday’s game which caused us two goals according to them. They went on to say that Ronaldo understands that Higuaín is on the rise as a player and that he wants to be the club’s Pichichi but the Portuguese ace feels that the striker must pass when he can and not be so “individualistic”. I actually agree. I am not against Higuaín but I really do feel has to pass up opportunities. Raúl or Van Nistelrooy wouldn’t do that but Higuaín is not a fox in the box like either of them. He prefers to participate in play from outside the box as well.

Arsené Wenger rejected Real Madrid once again. The difference this time is that an offer was never made.

And in other news Caroline Celico denied that she insulted Manuel Pellegrini on twitter.
