Para siempre blanco!

Post-match comments

Jorge Valdano discussed the importance of Saturday’s win at the Riazor following the match. Manuel Pellegrini underscored the team’s eagerness to win in statements made following the victory against Deportivo. Unquestionably one of the keys to Real Madrid’s victory against Deportivo, Guti commented on the historic win. Esteban Granero scored the first goal of the night and proved once again just how talented he his.  Alvaro Arbeloa showed just how versatile he can be by covering the right back position with Marcelo back in the lineup. The defender also assisted on the third and final goal of the night.

Valdano:

Fortunately we won and ended an historic streak, but we also had a little trouble in the last twenty minutes of the match. We are calm and we know the team is making progress. Cristiano Ronaldo is an excpetional player and we are happy to have him, but behind him there is a tremendous team.

Pellegrini:

The team came out in similar fashion as the victory against Espanyol. The players were very motivated as they entered a was had tended to be a very hostile environment for Real Madrid.

The league is up for grabs until mathematically impossible. It is matches like these that are so important to win.

We sought the win from the very start. We were the superior team throughout the match. Our game plan as visitors is to always take the initiative; a facet of the game I believe is extremely important.

Guti:

We hadn’t won here in many years. We played great in the first half and had many scoring chances.

I saw Benzema out of the corner of my eye and as the goalkeeper rushed towards me I flicked it back to my teammate.

This was the fair outcome. We proved that we are a great team and we are still in the fight. Real Madrid’s pride rests on winning titles.

Granero:

I try to take advanatge of every chance I get. I am happy we won because the team was great on both ends of the pitch. The early goal served us well. We played at a steady pace and enjoyed the ball. We were mobile and vertical when we needed to be.

We slowed down in the second half because of fatigue, but we were able to resist their pressure. This squad is very deep and any one of us can play well.

We were anxious to win here. The second goal was astounding. We know we cannot slip up, but we hope Barcelona do one day.

Arbeloa:

Winning was very important because Barcelona won and an eight-point difference would have been too much.

Barcelona are not losing and we don’t know when they will, which is why we cannot slip up either. We have spoken about it. We know we need to win, win, win and not lose.

I am happy with the assist. You have to have ice in your veins for such plays because you might only have half a second to make the play. But give Benzema credit as well because he got open and then scored.

Perhaps this is the right track. Spanish players are becoming more valuable day by day. Let’s hope it stays that way.

All eleven players who started tonight are internationals. This team was built to overcome all obstacles including injuries.
