Post-match comments

Director General and Presidential Aide Jorge Valdano analysed the victory over Mallorca for Realmadrid.com and RealmadridTV. Manuel Pellegrini was very happy with his team’s victory, as he believes his men played well in every aspect of the game. Kaka made his comeback tonight after recovering from pubalgia. The player was happy with the victory and with his recovery.

Jorge Valdano:

It was a complicated evening due to the weather. I wish to thank the fans for coming despite the snow. I’m also grateful to the players for making such a great effort. The team showcased a great attitude. We played better than Mallorca and also had more chances on goal. We should have netted more strikes.

The defence was once again impeccable. We haven’t conceded a single goal in three consecutive games despite Pepe’s absence, who is incredibly important to our defensive line. Mallorca can kill you in a single counterattack. We didn’t score a third goal, but we tried our best.

Both strikes were beautiful. We have quality forwards, which gives us a great advantage. We should just focus on our game and forget about what others do. We must strive to be better each day.

Manuel Pellegrini:

It was important to win in order to snatch three points. We played a great game overall. It was complicated to do so given the weather, but also because changes were made to the lineup, such as bringing on Kaka and Gago. Also because Mallorca are having a great run and they were confident. The score doesn’t reflect what the game was really like. We had many chances on goal. I think we were also solid in defence, so I am happy with the team’s efforts and about having taken three points.

Points are always important. You have to try to win all those points at stake in home games and take as many as you can in the first leg. We are currently having a mano a mano with Barcelona and they drop very few points.

In attack we played as we always do, counting on Higuain’s and Cristiano’s movements and on the help from our second attacking line. We scored two goals and had clear chances to net more. Guti is very important thanks to the precision of his passes. The team needs him. I’m glad we played so well despite the absences we suffered from.

The team is complete despite Pepe’s injury.

Real Madrid 2-0 Mallorca

Real Madrid scored two goals against Mallorca, but they had at least a dozen chances to net more. Higuain scored the opener on the box-line and Granero followed suit. It’s been three games since the Whites last conceded a strike and they remain undefeated at the Bernabeu in La Liga.

Kaka and Gago were the new faces on the lineup. As soon as the match kicked-off, Cristiano Ronaldo sprinted 50 metres with the ball to put pressure on Mallorca and show them just how motivated he and his team were.

The Madridistas were excellent in attack, positioning themselves well to finish off all collective efforts despite Mallorca’s tight defence, but they were also solid in their half of the pitch. It took the team just seven minutes to score the opener. Kaka served a brilliant pass to Higuain, who dribbled past a player and scored an unstoppable shot with his left foot.

Real Madrid had six more chances on goal in the first half, two of which deserve to be mentioned. The first was a failed one-on-one by Kaka (22′), who had previosly triangulated with Ronaldo (the Portuguese gave the ball back with a terrific pass with his back to his team-mate). Several minutes later, Cristiano masterfully controlled the ball and took a shot, but he was off target (38’).

As soon as the second half was underway, Granero (who came on for Van der Vaart on the 20-minute mark due to an injury) scored the team’s second strike from a volley following a phenomenal cross from Higuain.

The Whites weren’t satisfied with the score and, despite the cold temperature and the snow falling onto the pitch, kept trying to net more strikes. Ronaldo missed a shot from afar (53’) and close to the goal-line (87’), and Higuain (63’) and Kaka (54’) also failed to score from their chances. Granero would have tallied another from right outside the box if his terrific shot hadn’t been prodigiously saved by the goalkeeper (59’).

Guti received a standing ovation when he replaced the niggled Xabi Alonso (83’) and showcased his playmaking skills as solidly as ever. Real Madrid never diminished their onslaughts on Mallorca and in the end deserved to win with a larger cushion.

Lineups:

Real Madrid: Casillas, Arbeloa, Garay, Albiol, Marcelo, Gago, Xabi Alonso (Guti 85′), Van der Vaart (Granero 21′), Kaká (Benzema 71′), Higuaín, Cristiano Ronaldo;

Mallorca: Aouate, Josemi, Rubén, Nunes, Ayoze, Mario, Martí (Víctor 86′), Borja Valero, Julio Álvarez (A. Keita 59′), Chori Castro, Aduriz (Pezzolano 79′);
