Metzelder press conference
Christoph Metzelder gave the first press conference following the team’s return from its successful North American tour.

You haven’t been working out wiith your team-mates. How do you feel?
I have strained my adductor muscles and that’s why I did specific workouts today. It isn’t serious.
Juande Ramos didn’t count on you, but you are a starter with Pellegrini. Your life seems to have changed much in just two months…
I think it has. We all know it is still too soon, but we must use the preseason to prepare ourselves well for the long season ahead. I feel fine and I am happy with my current personal situation.
How are Van Nistelrooy and Diarra doing?
We are all happy about their return. We all want to play and I think it’s natural for them to feel excited after sustaining injuries for eight months.
Have you coincided with Cristiano in the gym today? How is he doing?
I’m no doctor, but he looked good. He isn’t sick with swine flu and he’s been able to train normally. I think he will very probably rejoin the squad this week.
What did you think of the North American tour?
It was a tough trip that helped us improve. We promoted football, so we are happy with the tour.
Is the team’s main objective to win the three titles this season?
This club must always win. We know it will be hard because there are many quality teams in Europe. I think we have improved considerably and our goal is always to win.
Are Pellegrini’s methods very different to Schuster’s or Juande’s?
Every coach has a particular style. He’s done a good job so far by having us attend double or triple sessions each day. The team is grateful for that. We are working very hard to be as fit as we possibly can at the start of the campaign.
Is it worth it to spend so much money on players like Cristiano Ronaldo?
Football has undergone a great change and become big business, especially when it comes down to players that make a difference. We footballers also have great social responsibility with our fans and people that haven’t been fortunate enough to earn what we earn.
Is this the best squad you’ve ever been a part of?
This squad has great quality. It isn’t normal to have men like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo on the same team. We are proud of that.
Who will feel more pressure, Barcelona for having to win three titles again or Real Madrid for having made such great signings?
Both clubs have always felt great pressure. The situation hasn’t changed much. Team spirit, camaraderie and a good atmosphere rule over this squad.
Higuain to AS
Gonzalo Higuain talked to AS about the team’s preseason.

Have you already recovered from the North American tour?
I feel better now after resting and sleeping on Monday.
What did it mean for you to score those two goals in Washington?
It was a joy. Every forward likes to score goals, especially when there is so much competition in the team. I’m glad I made good use of the opportunity I was given and that the team reached a level close to what Pellegrini demands.
How was your meeting with Maradona at the airport?
It went fine. I didn’t know Argentina was flying to Russia, so when I arrived and saw them I felt very happy. I greeted the players and the coaching staff, and had the chance to meet Maradona and to talk to him.
Does it cross your mind to play for another national team other than Argentina?
No. I only think about playing for Argentina. I have said so many times and I don’t know why someone would say otherwise.
Haven’t you received a call from the French FA?
No, that was settled in the past. My greatest ambition is playing the World Cup for Argentina. It’s just on the road ahead and I hope to perform at a great level this campaign.
What did you think when Real Madrid signed Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Benzema?
I felt happy. We will have more competition in the team. They are some of the best players and I hope they will improve the squad.
There’s some confusion around Real Madrid’s tactical scheme. Is it a 4-2-2-2?
We move freely up front, occupying different positions each time, but bearing in mind we have to help the team defend. We are aware forwards are the first defenders and we must help each other.
And in offensive plays?
The idea is to move freely and combine with each other promptly, with no more than two touches on the ball. With quality players on board everything seems easier.
Are you in disadvantage because you were signed by previous president Ramon Calderon?
I’d rather not dwell on such comments. There’s nothing of the sorts going on. On the contrary, there was a very good base of players which were capable of winning two straight league titles. I’ll try and convince the coach that he can count on me. I’m excited about staying at the Club with this interesting project. It has won much admiration worldwide and I hope it will turn out for the best at the end of the season.
What did you know about Florentino Perez?
I was just thirteen when he first arrived at the Club in 2000. He first signed Figo, then Zidane, Ronaldo… I already regarded Real Madrid as an example for the other clubs. I knew the President was able to achieve those things and he has done it again this year forming a top-class squad.
What have you learned from Raul?
I’m still learning from him. Despite breaking every record and winning every competition, his hunger for titles remains the same as the first day. He’s admirable.
Now that you’ve seen him up close, what would you highlight about Cristiano Ronaldo?
What can I say, he has won the Ballon d’Or… He’s a great player and we’re all helping him to be successful at the Club. And he’s quite a normal guy.
Has he startled you?
No, because I didn’t expect him to be otherwise. He’s just another team-mate. On the pitch his best quality is to overtake opponents. He’s almost unstoppable in one-on-ones.
Is Raul your main rival for a spot in the line-up?
No, we all fight for the same spots. We shouldn’t forget about Van Nistelrooy and Negredo either.
Cristiano Ronaldo has FLU and not SWINE FLU
SWINE FLU
FLU
Cristiano Ronaldo is suffering from flu picked up on the U.S. tour and has failed to link up with the Portugal squad for their friendly in Liechtenstein, the club said on its website. Real said in a statement:

The Netherlands host England in Amsterdam for a friendly on 12 August. The Brazilian Kaka will participate in his first exhibition match as a Madridista as the Seleçao heads to Tallinn, Estonia. Portugal has requested the services of Pepe for a friendy against Liechtenstein in the capital of Vaduz. The two French players are on official duty with France, who play the Faroe Islands in World Cup 2010 qualifying action.
For the last time, IT IS NOT SWINE FLU.

DC United 0-3 Real Madrid
FedEx Field hosted an exhibition of Real Madrid’s offensive prowess. The goals were late in arriving, but they were well worth the wait. Higuain knocked in a brace, Robben scored with a lob over the keeper and the Whites proved to the world that they mean business.

It was the perfect day for Pellegrini to continue toying with ideas before La Liga kicks off later this month. The Chilean coach drew up a 4-5-1 with Xabi Alonso responsible for distributing the ball in his first match as a starter. Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo swapped positions, Higuain was lead man in attack and Pepe and Albiol occupied the center of the back line.
Real Madrid took the early initiative and had several chances to take the lead. Sneijder (7´), Albiol (13’) and Kaká (16’) –who all linked up with Granero- were unsuccessful until the best chance of the match. Drenthe initiated the play, found Cristiano Ronaldo unmarked and provided a perfect long ball for the Portuguese international, who was one-on-one with the keeper. The shot, however, came a fingertip shy of finding the back of Wicks’ net (18’).
An elaborate play by Kaka (20´) was followed by control of possession by DC United, who have many more matches under their belt this season. Even though their season began four months ago, the first half drew to a close with an Higuain header that Wicks managed to save following a magical cross by Drenthe.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Sneijder were replaced by Arjen Robben and Raul to start the second period. The Dutchman had the first chance to score on 51′ after feinting past Jakovic, but Wicks charged the ball and was able to trap it before any damage was done.
Real Madrid gained momentum and Higuain opened the scoring. The Argentine received a pass up the middle, galloped through defenders and smoothly slipped the ball into the net (57’). Two minutes later, Granero combined with Robben, who assisted Higuain with one touch. The forward dribbled by Wicks and scored with ease.
Garay replaced Xabi Alonso forcing Pepe to advance his position. The improvised midfielder later provided Robben with an assist that culminated in the third goal of the night (68’). The Dutchman controled the ball and lobbed it over the keeper to bring the 70,00 fans on hand to their feet. Real Madrid could have scored more -Raul had a shot hit the post-, but it was already clear that this team is getting primed and ready for what is to come.
Lineups:
DC United: Wicks (Kocic, min.66’), Jakovic, Janicki, Burch, Pontius (Szetela, min.63´), Fred, Gomez, Olsen, Wallace, Luciano Emilio, Jaime Moreno (Simms, min.63´)
Real Madrid: Casillas (Adan, min.76), Arbeloa (Torres, min. 72), Pepe, Albiol (Metzelder, min.80), Drenthe, Xabi Alonso (Garay, min.66), Sneijder (Robben min.46), Granero, Cristiano Ronaldo (Raul, min.46), Kaka (Guti, min.66’), Higuain (Negredo, min.76).

DC United vs Real Madrid | Pre-season Friendly | Preview
DC United host Real Madrid in the Madridistas’ second and final match of their North American tour. United are the most successful side is MLS history, which makes for a much different match than that seen in Toronto. Lass and Benzema are unavailable after being called up by France.

Real Madrid and DC United meet on Sunday for the second time in three years after playing to a 1-1 draw in 2006. More than 90,000 fans are expected to show up, but Benzema and Lass won’t be seen on the pitch as the two have joined up with France for a World Cup qualifier against the Faroe Islands.
The Whites have played five matches in North America over the last four years with a record of four victories –the last against Toronto FC- and one draw –against DC United-.
Real Madrid went two for two four years ago under head coach Vanderlei Luxemburgo. The Whites defeated the Chivas Guadalajara 1-3 at Soldier Field in Chicago and a couple days later beat the LA Galaxy 0-2 at the Home Depot Center. One year later Real Madrid traveled to Salt Lake City, where they beat Real Salt Lake 0-2 followed up by their 1-1 draw against Sunday’s hosts.
Raul, Iker Casillas, Antonio Adan, Sergio Ramos and Ruud Van Nistelrooy are the only members of the current squad who made the 2006 trip. All except Adan were in the starting lineup three years ago at Qwest field.
Founded in 1995 and considered the most successful club in American soccer, DC United have won four MLS Cups and were the first American side to win the CONCACAF Champions’ Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998.
Bolivian striker is DC United’s most veteran player and leads the team in games played (283) and goals scored (120). “Playing against Real Madrid will be a great experience,” he said as the most successful team in the United States prepares to host the best club of the 20th Century.

RIP Daniel Jarque
Espanyol captain Daniel Jarque has died, the club have announced in a statement. The 26-year-old passed away on Saturday evening when his heart stopped following a training session in Coverciano, Italy where the squad are on a pre-season camp. Club doctors and Italian paramedics tried to revive Jarque, a product of the Espanyol youth system, but without success.

Jarque’s death comes two years after the death, also from heart failure, of Sevilla defender Antonio Puerta, who died aged 22 after having collapsed during the opening game of the Spanish La Liga season.
A statement on the club’s official website read:
Tragedy struck Espanyol and the family of Dani Jarque this evening. The blanquiazul player died from a cardiac arrest. The doctor Cervera carried out CPR on the player and used a defibrillator, which showed that the arrest was non responsive. After a few minutes the first ambulance arrived from the Florence emergency services, who tried again with the defibrillator they carried. The medical services continued carrying out CPR, administering adrenaline and atropine for an hour, but the player’s heart did not react, so finally that determined his death. RCD Espanyol, broken with pain, wish to put themselves at the absolute disposition of the family of our captain Dani Jarque, to whom go our warmest thoughts.
Espanyol, who had been due to play Bologna on Sunday, have suspended their pre-season tour of Italy and will fly back to Barcelona. Jarque joined Espanyol at the age of 12, making his debut in 2002, and was handed the captaincy this summer.
Raul, Ronaldo and Pellegrini wished to express their grievances to Dani Jarque’s family.
Raul:
We found out about the death of a fellow footballer a few minutes ago, and as captain of Real Madrid and on behalf of the team, I want to express our sincere condolences. We will support the player’s family and the Espanyol family in any way possible during this very difficult time.
Cristiano Ronaldo:
It is very sad when a collegue dies. It is a part of life and we must be aware of it. It is a very sad day for us.
Pellegrini:
We wish it wasn’t true. It happened two years ago in Sevilla with Puerta and the news is very troubling.
Butragueño:
It was devastating news. We are very sad. We want to express our condolences to Espanyol and their entire family. The team has been deeply affected, but this could happen to any of us. We are all human beings and we are thinking about his family. We have told the organization that we will express the pain we feel during tomorrow’s match against DC United.
RIP Daniel Jarque.
Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul and Pellegrini press conference
Manuel Pellegrini, Raul Gonzalez and Cristiano Ronaldo were present for today’s press conference, which also served as the presentation of tomorrow’s match against DC United.

What do you think about the DC United match?
Pellegrini: I would first like to say thank you for the kind words welcoming us. We want the fans to enjoy a great show.
Cristiano: It will be a nice friendly and the fans are sure to have fun.
Raul: We hope its a good match and that the fans enjoy it. These matches are part of our preparation and we must correct things.
What are your thoughts on football in the United States and what needs to happen for it to be more competitive?
Cristiano Ronaldo: It is growing slowly but surely. Toronto FC played a good match and will improve with time. I am sure it will be a much more competitive league in the next few years.
Are you worried about the state of your players, who will have played two matches in less than 48 hours?
Pellegrini: I am not worried because we have 22 players and we will see during the upcoming training session who is fit to play competitively.
What did you think about your team in Toronto?
Pellegrini: It was just a preseason game. We are trying to give the same amount of playing time to all the players, but it is still too early to draw any conclusions. I liked how the team performed in Toronto.
Would you like to play in the US in the future?
Cristiano: You never know. Anything is possible.
Raul: It’s a possibility.
Is living with the constant harassing hard?
Cristiano: It is very easy. I like who I am. I live life the way I choose.
Does your brace against Toronto help vindicate you?
Raul: It’s been this way for the last fifteen years. I hope it continues.
Will you play football or soccer against DC United?
Pellegrini: All that matters is that the fans have fun and enjoy a great match.
Post-match comments
Cristiano Ronaldo and Arjen Robben were two of Real Madrid’s goal scorers in Toronto. Kaka, Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso talked about their debut against Toronto FC right after the match.

CRISTIANO RONALDO:
I’m happy for the team. We’re improving game after game. Raul has made an outstanding performance and so has Kaka. It’s easy to play well in this team.
ROBBEN:
We’ve played well and we’ve dominated the match. We have knocked the ball around nicely against a team of true athletes. The new signings are great footballers and they prove it in every training session. We all like to score goals and I’m happy to have done so tonight. I’d like to stay in the Club, I believe in myself and I’m looking forward to helping the team.
KAKA:
I’m very happy about my debut. It was just a preseason game but it’s important to play as many minutes as possible. I couldn’t score a goal but the important thing is to create offensive plays. I’ve contributed to the game and I’ve felt at home with the rest of the players. Real Madrid appeal to many people and I’m happy to be a part of the Club.
We’ve got to keep on working hard and improving. Let’s hope to keep up the good work throughout the season, although it’s important to play good football right from the start. Playing alongside these players is nice, but doing so for Real Madrid makes it more important. This is a strong group of players and we must be consistent during the whole campaign.
XABI ALONSO:
I’m very happy about this first contact with my team-mates. During the preseason we should aim at attaining both offensive and defensive balance so it will show up during the season. The squad is made up of humble, easy-going people. I’m delighted with them. I’ll be participating more in each game.
ARBELOA:
We’ve played well but we’re still in the preseason and we must take one step at a time. We have a great team but we must prove it throughout the campaign. I still don’t know which shirt number I’ll be wearing.
Toronto FC 1-5 Real Madrid
Real Madrid showcased brilliant football at the BMO Field. Raul (twice), Cristiano Ronaldo, Benzema and Robben scored for the Whites while Gala netted Toronto’s goal. Kaka, Xabi Alonso, Arbeloa and Albiol made their debut.

It didn’t take long for Real Madrid to score. Twelve minutes into the first half Raul got rid of two defenders using his landmark dribble and scored the opener with his right foot, the ball hitting the crossbar before finding the back of the net. Just five minutes later, a long ball from Lass was headed by Cristiano Ronaldo down to Benzema, who gave the ball back to Ronaldo. The Portuguese star netted the second goal for the Whites after a one-touch shot with his right foot (17’).
Kaka participated in every offensive play by the Whites and even had a chance to score with a shot from outside the box which sailed just wide (23’). It was the prelude to Real Madrid’s third goal of the evening. Albiol received Ronaldo’s corner kick and crossed the ball towards the far post, where Metzelder was waiting to assist Raul. The captain defeated Stefan Frei with a header on the 35-minute mark.
Granero, Pepe, Torres and Dudek came on for Kaka, Albiol, Arbeloa and Casillas at the start of the second half. Some minutes later, Xabi Alonso made his debut. The new signing, Negredo and Robben came on for Raul, Guti and Cristiano Ronaldo on the 62-minute mark.
These substitutions were soon followed by yet another goal for the Whites when Benzema scored after a great play from Negredo (65’). Granero, another academy player, had a chance of scoring but his shot went wide (70’). Four minutes later, Gala netted the goal for Toronto much to the delight of the fans packing the BMO Field (74’). Real Madrid sealed the victory five minutes from time when Robben received a genius through ball from Benzema and scored the definitive 5-1.
Lineups:

Toronto FC vs Real Madrid | Pre-season Friendly | Preview
Real Madrid square off against Toronto FC on Friday as more than 100 years of football history clashes against modern American soccer. Toronto fans have been waiting a long time for this moment, while Madridistas are looking forward to seeing Kaka, Albiol, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa debut for their new team.

BMO Field will witness first hand the first-time appearances of Kaka, Albiol, Xabi Alonso and Arbeloa as Madridistas. The four trained without incident on Thursday and Manuel Pellegrini all but assured that a couple, if not all, would make the starting eleven.
Iker Casillas may also return to action having returned from vacation a week ago following his participation in the Confederations Cup. However, Sergio Ramos, who also rejoined the squad last week, stayed in Madrid due to tendonitis in his left Achilles heal.
Tickets to the match sold out in no time and the 21,000 seat stadium will be packed to the brim. Inaugurated on 28 April 2007, BMO Field hosted the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup won by Argentina.
Despite being eliminated from the CONCACAF Champions League by the Puerto Rico Islanders onTuesday, Toronto FC is eager to showcase its stuff against this new-look Real Madrid.
BMO Field
BMO Field is named after the Bank of Montreal, who purchased the naming rights to the stadium in 2006. The venue was part of Canada’s successful bid to host the 2007 FIFA U-20 World Cup and it has also hosted a variety of other sporting and musical events.
Canada’s largest football-specific stadium was inaugurated on 28 April 2007 with a 1-0 loss by home side Toronto FC against the Kansas City Wizards. Later that summer it was a venue for the FIFA Under-20 World Cup, at which point it was known as the National Soccer Stadium, and it hosted the final won by Argentina.
Friday’s match between Real Madrid and Toronto FC has generated so much interest that extra seating had to be installed, thus pushing BMO Field’s capacity to 20,000.
Twenty-two men on hand
Manuel Pellegrini and 22 players make up the expedition to Toronto and Washington DC. Recent Real Madrid signing, Xabi Alonso will travel with the team, while six players, including Ramos, Gago, Marcelo, Van der Vaart, Diarra and Van Nistelrooy will stay in Spain.
SQUAD LIST:

Defenders: Pepe, Albiol, Metzelder, Garay, Torres, Arbeloa.

Luis Figo to Diario Economico
Figo, who signed for Real just one day after Florentino Perez was elected, has now revealed that he quit the Camp Nou because he was unhappy with the terms of his contract.

At the time, Lazio were available to match my release clause and, as such, I told him [then Barca president Luiz Nunez] I had an offer and, because of that, I would like to review my terms and match them to the best ones the club were offering.
I was at Euro 2000 in Holland and things were going fine. However, the possibility of one of the candidates to the Real presidency, Florentino Perez, signing me emerged and I spoke to president Nunez about that offer. I did not want to quit Barcelona at the time. I just wanted them to acknowledge my quality, and he was just saying he would wait for someone to pay my buy-out clause.
The whole transfer process to Real was curious. After Euro 2000, I was on holiday in Algarve and then I flew to Sardinia with my family and, at that time, I had not decided what to do because, on those days, the Real elections would take place.
On one of those days, I had several intermediaries at my door trying to convince me to sign for Real and some of them crying in front of my wife, because they had assumed commitments which, if they were not to happen, would have a high cost and they would be the ones to pay.
The Barcelona presidential candidate, Joan Gaspart, wanted me to continue, but I did not trust the promises he had made me. Finally, Perez won the elections at Real and I assumed the responsibility of finalizing what [agent] Jose Veiga had agreed weeks before.
I flew to Lisbon the day after the elections, Monday, and I went to Veiga’s office. When I arrived and entered the room, there were about ten people sitting around a table, all trying to convince me to sign on that moment. That’s when I called my wife and told her, ‘That’s it, I am of Real Madrid’. I did not return to Barcelona.
I do not regret changing to Real Madrid. It was a difficult decision, because I had to start over, but it was also a great challenge. Any player wants to be eternal, play forever and always be at their best. At the same time, we have to be realistic, and, as such, I decided I wanted to end in a positive way, at a great a club and winning titles. I wanted to quit with a good taste on my mouth, instead of with a second-level team or injured.
Sneijder and Robben have fans in England
Hola,
Aston Villa boss Martin O’Neill has hinted that he would like to sign Wesley Sneijder. O’Neill has been linked with the Dutch star over the course of the summer, as his place at Real looks increasingly uncertain. Real have spent millions bolstering their squad making it unclear where Sneijder could feature. Sneijder’s agent, Soren Lerby, has made it clear that Real have told him that they want to keep the player. Reports emanating from Spain say that with Inter Milan also linked, it seems Real could be ready to allow Sneijder, amongst others, to leave. And O’Neill admits he needs to be interested in players of the calibre of Sneijder. The Villa manager told Sky Sports:
I think that the more creativity you have in your side the better chance you will have. These are particularly special players who are not (generally) available. If there were players like Sneijder, who have great talent and might be surplus to requirements at a club that is buying (new players), then I think you should be interested, even if that interest is not reciprocated. Because how else are you going to try and improve your team?
Arjen Robben has vowed to fight for his place at Real Madrid and will only leave to join a club playing in the UEFA Champions League. Reports have suggested that Real could look to offload the Dutch winger following the raft of big-name arrivals. Robben, along with compatriots Royston Drenthe, Wesley Sneijder and Ruud van Nistelrooy, is facing a battle to secure regular first-team football under new coach Manuel Pellegrini. The former Chelsea man has been linked with a return to the Premier League, with Tottenham Hotspur rumoured to be showing an interest. However, Robben has again ruled out a move to White Hart Lane and remains determined to establish himself in Pellegrini’s plans this season. Robben told The Sun:
With all the respect in the world, I have decided not to join Tottenham. For the moment I want to fight for my place at Real Madrid and want to focus all my attentions on my preparations. I hope to achieve a lot with Real Madrid this season. The only thing I would consider is a move to another club in the Champions League.
Guti has also been talking. He is currently in Toronto preparing for tonight’s game against Toronto FC. AS quoted him saying this during a press conference at BMO Field:
I don’t believe that it is worth talking about anything if the club have done everything possible to bring in all these great players and a new coach but we do not deliver on the field. Florentino has returned and he has made these big signings and the team is now at an exceptional level. The only thing we can do now is show that on the pitch. At the end of the day, results are what matter the most, but it’s true that this is a very exciting project.
One thing is common to all three players particularly more to Sneijder and Guti than Robben only because of the positions they play in. Their place in the team is not assured. But one thing has to be made clear. They are indispensable. If at all we want to win whatever is in our sight we have to keep them. The poll is fairing well. The readers seem to be as confused as I am. My vote was for Fernando Gago. Keep voting. The poll shall remain open till the end of the transfer window.
Till next time,
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
P.S: Atletico want Gago and Higuain. Haha!
Pellegrini, Guti and Casillas press conference
Accompanied by Toronto FC head coach, Chris Cummins, Manuel Pellegrini, Guti and Casillas appeared before the press on Thursday evening to discuss the importance of Friday’s match and expectations for the upcoming season.

What do you know about your opponent?
Pellegrini: I know that Toronto FC was recently eliminated from CONCACAF Cup by a team from Puerto Rico, although we have watched some game tape of previous matches.
What do you think the match will be like?
Pellegrini: We are trying to put every player through the same amount of training and the players are adjusting to a new style of playing.
Are you responsible for coaching this huge squad?
Pellegrini: Real Madrid is responsible for winning, always. Obviously the better our players are the more options we have of winning.
Is Real Madrid serious about this match even though it is just a friendly?
Guti: It will be eleven against eleven and should be a hard-fought, competitive match. We hope the fans enjoy it.
Will Kaka and Xabi Alonso debut?
Pellegrini: Both are likely to play. If it isn’t the entire match, it will be for a good amount of minutes.
Are you satisfied with the squad?
Pellegrini: I am very happy with the squad that has been assembled. We have built a team capable of winning all three titles in play and the newly acquired players joined a squad that was good to begin with.
What does this project mean to the captains?
Guti: It is a very interesting project. The return of Florentino Perez has resulted in some great signings. Now we have to prove it on the pitch.
Casillas: I agree. We will return this team to where it belongs.
What are the challenges of coaching Real Madrid?
Pellegrini: The first is to win. The second is to play pretty football so that people leave the Santiago Bernabeu with a smile on their faces.
I am so bloody confused.
Ignoring those who clearly have been ignored by the boss, the ones those have been sold and the Castilla players we have exactly 26 players left. And the maximum we can have is only 25. I am confused as to whom we are planning to sell. I just can’t decide and hence the following:
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar to Milan for 15 million euros
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar will play in Milan next season, following an agreement between Real Madrid and the club rossonero for 15 million euros plus a bonus payable in three years. The Dutchman, who arrived here last winter, is leaving after being told he was not a part of Pellegrini’s plans for the upcoming season. I would like to thank Hunter for his services for Real and would like to wish him luck for the future.

Update:
Official statement, just for the sake of it:
Real Madrid C.F. and AC Milan have reached an agreement for the transfer of Klaas Jan Huntelaar to the Italian club.
Hala Madrid!!
Xabi Alonso press conference
Xabi Alonso held his first press conference as a Madridista on Wednesday and expressed how eager he is to be joining such “an exciting project that has laid important groundwork.”

One of the driving forces behind Real Madrid’s efforts was your desire to join this project.
I wasn’t sure if signing for Real Madrid would happen, but I was pretty confident. A made the decision to leave some time ago and there was no better club to sign for. I need to thank Real Madrid for their confidence in me, and this is the outcome I wanted. I am very happy.
What was your farewell from Liverpool like?
Very hasty. It all happened so fast and I didn’t have time to say goodbye properly. I will return to bid farewell as soon as I have a chance. I am very grateful to everyone. There will be time for a proper goodbye.
A lot has been said about your deteriorating relationship with Rafa Benitez.
I know a lot has been said, but there is mutual respect between us and professionalism. We have a cordial relationship.
Will you have to chance your style of football to adapt to Real Madrid?
Real Madrid and Liverpool obviously play differently, but I always try to maintain the same characteristics. I hope to contribute my very best. I am looking forward to participating and to becoming involved with the team.
How did your new teammates welcome you to your first training session?
I arrived a little late and they welcomed me with an applause. I talked to everyone. I will start to get to know them all better with time. I don’t think I will have any trouble adapting because I never have had any.
You almost signed for Real Madrid five years ago.
And five years later I am now a part of this club. This is the start of a new phase and there are high expectations and a lot of responsibility. I think great things will come out of this project.
You may make your Real Madrid debut in Anoeta Stadium.
I am hoping for a warm welcome. It is my home and I have always been treated kindly.
What did your time at Liverpool teach you?
I matured a lot during my five years in Liverpool. I grew as a player, played in the Champions League, won finals… The affection I left with and the many great nights I experienced… I know have more experience and want to do as best I can.
Did you have to do anything special to process for your transfer to be processed?
Informing the Federation wasn’t necessary. There is a formal process by which you put in a transfer request. The method by which my transfer took place doesn’t matter. What is important is that the operation was carried out.
When and how did you tell Liverpool that you wanted to leave?
I spoke to Rafa on several occasions last season, during the preseason and this summer. We knew there was a possibility so I immediately expressed my desire to return to Spanish football. In fact, when the season ended I spent several days training in Liverpool and I sat down with Rafa for two hours. We shared ideas and I told him I needed a change.
Do you feel pressure having to distribute balls to players like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo?
The simple fact of playing for Real Madrid entails pressure that you must accept. I am up for the challenge. I know expectations are high for this project. I wil try to contribute with the same way I have always played in the midfield: by offering solutions to my teammates, directing the game… Everything I know how to do.
What are your thoughts on this project?
I think it is a very exciting project that has laid important groundwork. There were already good players here and new players who will contribute new things have arrived. Hopefully this compact mix of players can offer dazzling football, which is always the best recipe for success.
Is there anything you want to say to Liverpool fans?
I am very grateful to Liverpool fans who made my five years there fantastic. They must understand, though, that this opportunity came up and it was the best option for me.
Do you know why Benitez wasn’t giving you much playing time this preseason?
I don’t know, but I don’t have an opinion on the matter. Rafa has his reasons and I respect him. He wanted to try other people, so I understand.
You are the icing on the cake in making this team more Spanish.
Making the team more Spanish is a good thing. Many years ago there was a great mix of Spaniards and foreigners and it worked to perfection. Now there are several national team players here; people who know one another. There are players who are the perfect age and have proven how good they are. It is a great mix that hopefully works well.
Michel Salgado’s farewell
Visibly overcome with emotion, Michel Salgado bid farewell to Real Madrid on Wednesday during a press conference at the Santiago Bernabeu. Salgado thanks the club for the treatment received over the last ten years and affirmed that “it will be hard” to leave Real Madrid.

Valdano:
We are here to say goodbye to a great. We have two testimonials to Michel’s time with Real Madrid. One are all the trophies he helped win and the other is the video we just saw. Both help us understand the importance Michel had for Real Madrid over the last ten years. A great person and professional is leaving us; a player who has left his mark on this club, the dressing room and the fans. Like all farewells, this is a sad moment. But he has done everything so well for so long that Real Madrid wanted to thank him publically. His behavior has always been impeccable. Real Madrid, its President, its Board of Directors and all those who comprise the Madridista family thank Michel from the bottom of our hearts. We want to let him know that this will always be his home because he has left a lasting impression and we are all very grateful.
Michel:
It will be hard because even though I knew I would get emotional I haven’t had the time. The time has come because this is life. It is hard to leave after ten years with Real Madrid, a club that has given me everything professionally and personally speaking. It has been a decade and I have mixed emotions right now. I am sad because farewells are always sad, especially after learning to love Real Madrid. I loved Celta when I was younger, but I have loved Real Madrid through and through. I am also happy because I am very proud to have played for the best club in the world for ten years. It has been a very trying decade, so to be able to reach this point makes me very proud.
Real Madrid will be very special for my whole family and I want to thank Jorge Valdano and the top brass for giving me the chance to bid farewell and to extend my career a little longer. It will be hard to put on another shirt, but I still feel like I can play football for a few years to come and enjoy what has been my life.
I would like to thank all the club employees because they make us greater each day, they show us their support and affection and they spoil us. I would also like to thank all the presidents and coaches I have had because they have all contributed to the history of this club. Thank you to the players and my teammates because it has been a privilege to play by their side and share a dressing room with the best in the world. Special thanks to those I have played with for the last ten years: Raul, Iker, Guti and Roberto Carlos, who although isn’t here, I shared a lot with. He is even the Godfather of my daughter. On a different note, thanks to my family, brothers, wife and kids who have put up with me every day, especially over the last few years when things got tough. And, of course, my parents, who I know would be proud on this day. They made me who I am and I owe them the world. My humility and work ethic reflect who they were. I cannot forget my agent, Gines Carvajal.
I am proud that I am not just leaving titles and matches played, but also many friends who have treated me so well in this city and club. It is hard to make good friends in life, so I am proud to have the friends I have.
I bid farewell by saying that I think Real Madrid will always be great because of its fans, who although are so demanding, are also great. I will say my last goodbye during the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy because I want to thank them for their support and respect over the last ten years. It is hard to have earned their respect and affection when such great players have passed through here. Finally, I want to thank you all for allowing me to express myself every day and for giving me the liberty to opine. Thank you. I will be a true Real Madrid from now on. I will suffer with and ejoy watching Real Madrid. This is not a goodbye, but a see you later. I feel privileged to have worn this shirt for ten years.
Press Conference:
How did your family take the news that you will be leaving Real Madrid?
It is as hard for them as it is for me. We were talking earlier about the fact that this is the first time in about twenty years that ties between father, brother and husband are cut with Real Madrid. And although my kids are young, they asked why I was leaving Real Madrid, so I told them that’s how life is. My family is also proud of what I have done here. It’s a shame I won’t be here for what is to come, but we will one day show them the video.
What is your fondest memory of this preseason?
It is hard to pick just one because I have had the fortune to be a part of so many. Perhaps the most special title is the first one in my first year here; the final in Paris. I felt like a European champions the moment I crossed the ball into Morientes.
Deep down you don’t think you could have stayed on for what promises to be a great year?
I always think about it. But this moment was due and we knew it would arrive. Every player is excited when the preseason begins. But it’s hard to lose significance and it will be very hard to watch Real Madrid reach the Champions League final and to not be on the pitch. That will be the toughest. You have to look at life from different perspectives and understand that cycles end. It is time to give way. The club has given me the chance to extend my career and football is very important in our lives.
What coach taught you the most?
The coach I spent most time with and who I got to know best was Vicente del Bosque. My greatest moments with Real Madrid came with him as coach, but I want to thank all of them because they all taught me different things.
What have the last two years been like having gone from being an international to barely playing?
It’s a normal slowdown. There is no middle ground for Real Madrid. Here the drop-offs are huge. My career unraveled in normal fashion. My four-month injury was key, but I slowly recovered and I feel strong enough to compete at a high level. The demand at Real Madrid however is another story, and the best footballers come here when they are in their early twenties and very strong, so coaches have to opt for players who can last longer. It has been tough because I played every Sunday and Wednesday, but when you stop and think about it, this is life and you just get less playing time.
Did Pellegrini influence your decision?
It has nothing to do with Pellegrini. He treated me very well. I was very enthused during the stage in Ireland, but the arrival of another right back filled the position. There were four of us and the club had to make a decision. We began talking and we reached a mutual decision. It would have been stupid to force the issue. It is good for the coach, for Real Madrid and for me; I think I still have two or three good years in me.
Did the club’s decision surprise you? Who convinced you that this was the right move?
It is understandable that when the club calls you and proposes a solution that the best thing to do is accept it. There are four wingers on the team and I have played football for a long time. They don’t have to tell me that my time at Real Madrid is over. You have to look at it as a different way of life. I am proud to bid farewell to Real Madrid like this. I arrived ten years ago and I say goodbye having accomplished more than I could ever dream of. I am proud of this day.
You have always been a straightforward guy. How do you think this team looks?
Phenomenal. I am upset that I can’t be a part of it. A great team has been built. The new arrivals will contribute a ton of talent. It is a balanced team in every aspect and it has the individual talent that has been missing in recent years. Players like Kaka and Cristiano Ronaldo can change the course of a match in an instant. When you add those who were already here like Raul, Pipa, Ramos… The team is amazing. I am sure they will do very well and I will enjoy watching them play.
And now what happens?
I will say my goodbyes. I have time to take a look at offers and choose what is right for me and my family. I have to make a decision, but I want to play as soon as possible.
Valdano to Cadena SER
Real Madrid Director General and Presidential Aide, Jorge Valdano discussed the signing of Xabi Alonso last night on El Larguero of Spanish radio’s Cadena Ser.

Alonso
We are very happy because we have completed the squad in the best way possible. It was very important that we sign Xabi Alonso. When I left Real Madrid during my last stint, Xabi wasa practically signed. Although it didn’t happen then, it did now, and we find ourselves with a much more mature Xabi.
Xabi will join the team immediately. On Wednesday he will have to speak to Pellegrini to see if he should travel with the team to Canada and the US. There will be time to present players once the tour is over.
We knew he was an important player for this team and a person that Real Madrid should count heavily on.
The President has insisted that we do things like they have never been done, and we have succeeded. Neither fans nor directors can be disappointed. Now it is time to honor all these decisions.
The club needed a shake-up. Very important players have been signed to reinforce every position, and fans are excited.
Wtih this last investment there will be no more signings. Before the preseason began, the coach told us that we needed players for the defense and the midfield, and that is what we have done.
I am very happy with the squad and the fact that it is younger and more Spanish.
Ribery
Bayern Munich took a hard stance from day one. They do not want to sell the player, so Madrid decided to not push and wait for another opportunity.
Departures
We are still looking for destinations for some players, but I am sure they are aware that they will not be relied upon as squad members this year. We aren’t allowed to have more than 25 players due to bureaucratic reasons and we know who we do not want.
Objectives
We aspire to improve every day and to fight for every tournament the team participates in. Real Madrid always has that oblgation. Because such a great team was built, the goals only get bigger.
Profile: Xabi Alonso
He sees the game like none other, he’s got a cannon of a leg and he can anticipate moves better than all the rest. Xabi Alonso (Tolosa, 25/11/81) is a veteran international who is more than familiar with European football and a mainstay on La Roja. His arrival will boost the Real Madrid midfield and will instantly make Alonso one of Pellegrini’s playmakers. Never a major goal-scorer, he has become free-kicker maestro and his powerful shots from outside the box are absolutely deadly.

Born into a family known for its football prowess, Xabi Alonso came into this world on 25 November 1981 in the Basque town of Tolosa. Following in the footsteps of his father, Periko Alonso, Xabi lived in Barcelona until he was six before moving to San Sebastian, where he began his career as a footballer.La Playa de la Concha, the famous beach in San Sebastian, was the first pitch used by the Madridista and the site where his passion for the game grew. Along with his best friend, Mikel Arteta (now playing for Everton), Alonso began laying the groundwork to enjoy the same success that his father had achieved as a professional in the 1980’s.
Xabi Alonso’s youth career began at Antiguoko, where he quickly stood out for his football prowess. Real Sociedad soon came calling, and his progress through the ranks culminated in his first team debut in Copa del Rey action against Logroñes. By the age of 18 he was easily the best player on the academy squad, so Real loaned the player to a Segunda Division side where he could better develop his skills. It was his first stint with Eiber, who he left in 1998 to debut in Spain’s top flight with Real Socieded before returning again in 2000. The following year marked his definite return to San Sebastian, where he played until 2004 and led the team to a second place finish in La Liga.
Prior to the 2004/05 season, Alonso completed a switch to Liverpool, where he dazzled Kopites with his incredible vision and eye for the pass. Additionally, his powerful long-range shot converted him into one of Europe’s best centre midfielders.
Still in his first season in England, Alonso had his ankle broken and was sidelined for three months. He managed to return for the quarterfinal round of the Champions League and helped guide Liverpool to the final against Milan. The Italians led the match 3-0 before halftime rolled around, but the Reds were able to do the unthinkable and forced extra time, where they defeated Milan in the penalty shootout for the club’s fifth European Cup.
Xabi Alonso has featured for Spain since debuting in 2003. He participated in both the 2004 and 2008 European Championship as well as the 2006 World Cup. His career high was no doubt the 2008 Euro won by Spain. Alonso was also named Man of the Match in the third group stage game against Greece.
An eye for the pass, speed in distributing, vision for the game, a powerful shot… just some of the attributes of the Basque footballer who managed to conquer English football. He has now landed at the Bernabeu to play for Real Madrid, who in a matter of weeks he will accompany to the city and stadium that witnessed his rise. And that is because the Whites play Real Sociedad on 15 August as part of the Txuri-urdin’s centenary celebrations.

Xabi Alonso becomes a Madridista!
Liverpool have reached an agreement to sell midfielder Xabi Alonso to Real, subject to a medical. The fee is reported to be in the region of £30m but Liverpool said the terms of the deal would remain confidential. A statement on Real’s website read:
Real Madrid C.F. and Liverpool F. C. have agreed to the transfer of Xabier Alonso Olano (Xabi Alonso). The player will arrive in Madrid tomorrow to undergo the required medical.
XABI ALONSO IS A MADRIDISTA. ITS OFFICIAL!!
A statement on the Reds’ official website reads:
Liverpool Football Club this evening confirmed they had reached agreement for the sale of Xabi Alonso to Real Madrid, subject only to a medical. The terms of the deal will remain confidential and undisclosed.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Salgado contract officially terminated
Its official. The statement on the club’s website read:
Real Madrid C. F. and Miguel Angel Salgado (Michel Salgado) have agreed that the player will be released from the club. Real Madrid C.F. would like to thank the until-now captain for his commitment and behaviour during ten consecutive years of exemplary service to the club.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Michel Salgado coy about future + other rubbish
Hola,
Let me get straight into the issue.
Michel Salgado is reported to have negotiated his release from Real Madrid. After spending 10 glorious years at Santiago Bernabeu the veteran accepts that the time has come to move on. Reports say that the acquisition of Arbeloa has persuaded him that his future lies away from Real.

Salgado was contracted to the club until the summer of 2010, like Guti and Raul, but both sides have agreed to end that agreement prematurely. The player was apparently given the choice to decide whether he would prefer to have the final year of his deal paid off or accept the offer of a testimonial. Marca reports that Salgado will say goodbye to the fans on August 25 when Real play AC Milan to retain the the Santiago Bernabeu Trophy.
His agent Gines Carvajal though is said to have already been approached with a number of interesting proposals. One such offer is reported to have come from Arab outfit Al Rayyan of Qatar. Real Zaragoza are also said to have expressed an interest, and a move to La Romareda would allow Salgado to remain in the Primera Liga.
Either way Michel Salgado will be looked upon as a legend. I still can remember those days when he used to rattle opponents dominating the right wing from back to front. I hope he still remains a part of Real Madrid.
You can find St.Iker’s comments down below.
Steven Defour has admitted a move to Liverpool would be an opportunity he couldn’t turn away. The dynamic youngster is highly respected by Liverpool and it is believed the Merseysiders could make a move if Xabi Alonso departs to Real Madrid. The youngster is quoted in The Daily Mail as saying:
I have an agreement with Standard Liege that I could go to a top club, and Liverpool fit the bill.
We too have shown an interest in acquiring the 21-year-old and Defour’s agent, Paul Stefani, confirmed that both clubs were interested in his client. He said:
Steven’s name has been mentioned not only at Real Madrid, but also at Liverpool, they are looking at him too. Normally he would stay for another year, but nobody could say no to clubs like those, and Liege would not stand in his way.
The Belgian international has made close to 100 appearances for his club and has become a regular with the national side. I just hope Liege give him a better deal. All this talk seems to be only because of a need of an improved contract.
Alvaro Negredo is unlikely to stay at Real Madrid this summer, according to a particular rumor, as he faces competition for a place up front from the likes of Raul, Benzema, Higuain, van Nistelrooy and Ronaldo. The player’s agent, Alejandro Camano, spoke about his client’s links to Serie A side Roma earlier today.
In Rome I only spoke with journalists. Now I am in England and speaking to four or five English clubs, but I didn’t hear anything from the Giallorossi. Real would let go of the player, but not sell him. Their goal is to sell him on a temporary basis and then redeem him later. His assessment is around €18 million.
Negredo, who bagged 19 goals in 34 appearances with Almeria in 2008-09, would allegedly ‘be honoured’ to join the Serie A side.
Italian football is very important. Along with Spanish and English it is the best in the world, but there is nothing concrete with any Italian team. Roma is a great team, they have [Francesco] Totti, who is one of the strongest players in the world. For Negredo it would be an honour to play for club’s at that level. He is a player capable of scoring 20 goals per season and showed that at Almeria.
It seems that Real are looking to make a similar deal as they did when they sold him to Almeria, including an option to buy him back in the future. I’ll simply pass this rumor.
Liverpool want 38m for Xabi Alonso. Real have come up to 27m. The situation seems to have hit a deadlock. I’ll prefer to wait on it.
Till I return with more bullocks,
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
