Real Madrid and Juventus will come face-to-face tonight at 22:30 CET in the semifinals of the Peace Cup. Fabio Cannavaro will play against his former team in Seville.

Juventus - Real Madrid_Preview

Real Madrid and Juventus have eleven European Cups between them. Some of the best footballers in history have played for both sides, which have clashed on several occasions in historic matches. The Whites have defeated the Italians seven times, losing five games, and have reached the Peace Cup semis as group leaders by defeating Liga Quito and drawing against Al Ittihad. Juventus defeated both Sevilla and Seongnam.

Real Madrid will use all their artillery at the Sanchez Pizjuan save for the recently arrived internationals -Kaka, Casillas, Albiol, Ramos and Arbeloa-. They will face men such as Trezeguet, Del Piero, Buffon and Fabio Cannavaro.

The first time both sides clashed was in the 1961/62 European Cup. Each team won one match 1-0 with goals from Di Stefano and Omar Sivori.

The most memorable Real Madrid-Juventus fixture was the 1998 Champions League final held in Amsterdam, which the Whites won 1-0 despite the Italins’ condition as favourites for reaching their third consecuutive final in the championship.

No changes for Seville

Pellegrini has called-up the same men that made the cut against Liga Universitaria Quito. The newly arrived Casillas, Ramos, Albiol, Arbeloa and Kaka will remain in Madrid while Van Nistelrooy, Diarra and Garay aren’t yet fit to play. Heinze, Huntelaar and Van der Vaart have been left out for coaching decisions.

A statement released by Robson’s family read:

It is with great sadness that it has been announced that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer. He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him. Sir Bobby’s funeral will be private and for family members only. A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby’s life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues. Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time.

Football has indeed lost a true great.

Benzema to Marca: Part II

In the second part of Benzema’s interview to Marca, the French player talks about his aspiartions and his team-mates.

Karim Benzema (1)

Ronaldo, one of your idols, predicted he would score 30 goals, how about you?
I’m different to him. I don’t like to predict those things.

He didn’t win the Champions League…
I hope it turns out differently for me. I’m in a great club and I’m looking forward to winning everything. Real Madrid must have top aspirations in every competition and when you sign for a big club you look forward to conquering titles.

Have any of the players you didn’t know impressed you?
I like Negredo, he plays very well, and Torres too. They’re young and they work hard. This group of players is willing to succeed.

Is captain Raul helping you?
He is an outstanding forward and a legend at the Club. He’s played here since he was very young. I speak to him and he gives me advice. I hope to learn from him.

When will we see Real Madrid’s full potential?
It’s early. We’re still in the preseason recharging our batteries. By the time the league starts we’ll be 100% ready.

How would you define Pellegrini? Did you know he speaks wonders of you?
He talks a lot with the players. He’s very close to us. I’m new in the Club, just like him, and we’re getting to know each other. He likes offensive football, quick passes… It makes me proud to hear he likes the way I play, but I have to prove him right on the pitch.

Are Real Madrid capable of winning the three titles?
This team can win everything. We want to conquer the Copa del Rey, La Liga and the Champions League. We’re in for everything this year.

Can you imagine lifting the Champions League cup at the Bernabeu?
Above all, I imagine playing the Champions League at the Bernabeu. I have a feeling we will get far in this competition.

Do you think earning the Ballon d’Or two years from now is feasible?
First of all, there’s La Liga and the Champions League to think about. My main goal is to help the team, and if personal honours follow it would be a good sign.

Has Cristiano Ronaldo made an impression on you?
I already knew him. He’s a good friend and we understand each other perfectly well on the pitch. I’d like to achieve many important things together.

Are Real Madrid unstoppable with Kaka on their side?
We’re not going to discover him at this stage. He improves our options up front.

Granero to Publico

Esteban Granero has returned to Real Madrid. The player told Publico he believes he has chances of earning a spot on the starting lineup.

Esteban Granero (3)

Is it inevitable for a youth teamer to be loaned out at some point, like you were at Getafe?
It doesn’t necessarily have to be inevitable. It’s just an option and I am not against it. It was good for me. It’s hard for Castilla players who perform in the Second Division B to be ready enough to play on the first team and meet the demands of Real Madrid. It’s good for players to gain experience at other clubs.

Do you think a signed player can feel as passionately for Real Madrid as an academy player?
I’m sure those who didn’t come from the youth system will defend this shirt to the death, but being a youth teamer is special. Things change a little when you’ve worn this kit for 12 or 13 years, like I have.

Did you think you’d come back or had you lost hope?
I never lost hope, but it became complicated for me to return at one point. The Club had faith in me and I am very grateful for that. I wish to pay them back with good performances.

Do you believe Real Madrid’s bet on the youth system is real?
Yes, why not? The thing is the Club can’t bet on all of us. Youth teamers can’t be on the first team as a general rule; they have to earn it.

What can you  bring to the team’s midfield?
Excitement, drive, hard work, sacrifice… I hope things turn out for the best.

Where has Pellegrini told you he wants you to play?
He knows I’m a versatile player, who can play either as an attacking midfielder or as a winger. He’ll use me where he deems it best. I am ready to do what he asks and he’s told me he has faith in me.

Has Raul given you any advice upon your return to the team?
We’ve known each other for a long time and he is always very fond of the players that come from the youth system. He came from there too and that’s maybe why he is so affectionate with us. He’s given us all the advice one can give and he supports us. He is a good captain.

Has Real Madrid changed much in the last couple of years?
Yes, and I think it’s happened for the best. This team seems more solid than the one I left to join Getafe, which coincidentally ended up winning the league title. I hope we can win more titles this year.

Will it be hard to earn a starting spot on the team?
It will be hard because this is a complicated team in which to earn a spot, but I think it is possible; if I didn’t, I would step out of the way. I have faith in my chances and I believe I can achieve a lot through hard work and sacrifice, but I know it won’t be easy.

Is it impressive to share a dressing room with the latest two Ballon d’Or winners?
It is very nice and exciting. You can learn a lot from them. They are idols of mine and I’ve watched them play on TV. It’s great to have the chance to pass them the ball.

Who were your childhood heroes?
Zidane and Raul.

How did you feel when the crowd chanted  your name in your  first game at the Bernabeu?
It made me very happy to see that the fans still remembered me that well. I guess the fact that I am an academy player means something to them. I am grateful for their support. It boosts your morale and that is always important.

Arbeloa is also a former academy player. Is it really necessary to play for other teams in order to be valued by the Club?
As I said before, sometimes you don’t have enough quality for the first team when you come straight from Castilla. Arbeola played for Liverpool, where demands are higher than on our second team. Arbeola, myself and others have benefitted from the years we spent on other teams.

Do you think you have greater chances of playing for Spain now?
That’s one of my goals, but I haven’t set myself a deadline. It will depend on the performances I give with my team.

Good news?! Its Great news!

You think that it is your day when the headlines reads Alonso ‘requests transfer’. You definitely know that it is your day when it reads Heinze se marcha al Olympique de Marsella. The latter can be translated as Heinze goes to Olympique Marseille or simply Heinze is no longer a Real Madrid player for its official! Now isn’t that brilliant?!!

Xabi Alonso (2)

If that is brilliant then wait till you hear this, Xabi Alonso has handed in a written transfer request to Liverpool. Even though we have no official information as of yet, the news is apparently out on Liverpool Echo, one of the most trusted Liverpool tabloid. So I guess the news itself can be considered genuine. Speculation suggests a deal for the midfielder will be struck with Madrid within the next couple of days for a fee reported to be in the region of £25m. This is simply superb. I say superb because I felt that Xabi Alonso was the missing piece in the Real Madrid jigsaw and now that his arrival is on the cards I think that success is almost inevitable for this great club. Heinze out => Xabi Alonso in. Sensational!

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Arbeloa press conference

Alvaro Arbeola gave a press conference after his first training session as a Madridista.

Alvaro Arbeloa (5)

Is it a dream come true to come back home?
It is. I’m very happy about beiing here again. I’ve finally achieved a long-term goal of mine that I once thought would never happen. It’s amazing how many turns life can take. I’m here to make good use of the chance I’ve been given.

How did your new team-mates greeted you? Did you feel like a rookie?
I didn’t feel like a rookie because I knew many people already from my previous spell here and from the national team. I felt comfortable with everyone and they all treated me very well. It seems like I’ve adapted pretty quickly.

Would you have liked to have a presentation?
I’m actually not very keen on those things. They talked to me about it, but I was happy to start training as soon as I arrived.

You’ve been described as an all-around defender. Has Pellegrini told you what he wants from you?
We haven’t had time to talk yet, but I can play wherever he wants me to. I have no preference for any position.

Is it true that Bayern Munich offered you more money?
I had an offer from Real Madrid, which is what I wanted. You can’t go many places when you leave Liverpool and I only wanted to come here when I found out I was wanted. I worked very hard for this and now I’m here.

You used to face Cristiano Ronaldo and now you’ll play alongside him…
I’d rather have him as a team-mate than as an opponent. I used to suffer against him and now  I’ll be able to enjoy his presence on the team and win titles with him.

You have friends at Real Madrid and your friend Xabi Alonso may also join the team.
I wish he does. I would be very happy to have him here. He is a great football player and a very good friend of mine. I don’t know what his situation is. We don’t talk much about stuff like that. I guess you’ll have to ask him and wait to see what happens these days.

How’s he been coping these last few days?
He is training hard and getting back into shape. He took part in Liverpool’s tour and he looked pretty calm. He isn’t going through an easy situation, but he is a professional that knows how to deal with this.

You’ve joined a great squad.
I have. I was lucky to share the dressing room with football legends in my previous stint on the team and that’s what I most cherish of that experience. The best players in the world are joining the team now and I feel proud to be part of this project. It is an important challenge.

Is it harder than it seems to reach the first team when you are an academy player?
It seems that growing up at Real Madrid, leave for a few years and then come back is the best option. You aren’t as well prepared as you should be to play with the greats when you join the first team straight from the academy. One of the best options is to play somewhere else in order to improve. Several of us have opted for that option. It may take longer, but it is more effective in the long run.

Your return and those of Granero and Negredo seem to indicate the Club believes in the academy…
I think it should be celebrated. We shouldn’t have more advantages for coming from the youth system, but the Club has supported the academy and fans like seeing players like us on the first team. The important this is that those who reach the first squad are prepared for the task. Esteban has proven to be ready to play here, and so has Negredo.

Are you ready to play in the Peace Cup?
Not yet. I was sick for a few days and I’m taking things slowly now. I don’t imagine I’ll play any games until we reach the US.

Do you feel you’ve returned as an academy player or as a footballer ready to put up a fight?
I’ve arrived as a player that has earned a spot on the team. I proved  I could fight for a spot as an acdemy player. Iker, Raul and Guti are still academy players. The beauty is to be a youth teamer, have the chance to fight for a spot and play several minutes like they did. That’s our goal.

Dudek said it is hard to negotiate with Benitez. Is that so?
I understand he is currently coaching the team and that he’s left negotiations aside for now. It wasn’t easy for me to get here, but here I am. Rafa defends his interests, but someone else is in charge of negotiating now.

The first league match will be against Deportivo. Is that exciting for you?
Of course, I want to play in every game. I find it special that our first match will be against Deportivo. I had six great months there and I left good friends behind.

Which position do you feel more comfortable in?
I don’t know. I was a full back 80% or 90% of the time at Liverpool, but I ended up playing as a centre back. I also played as a centre back at Deportivo. I would like to play in both positions because I like to change, but I really don’t mind where I play.

Benzema to Marca: Part I

Karim Benzema discussed his first few weeks as a Madridista with sports newspaper Marca.

Karim Benzema (4)

When and how did you become so passionate about Real Madrid?
When I was about 14 or 15 years old. I live in a neighborhood that loved Real Madrid. My friends and family admired the team.

What is the your oldest memory of Real Madrid?
The first match I saw was the final of the seventh European Cup and Pedja’s goal. I was 12 and I will never forget that day. It was such a great team.

What was Florentino Perez’s visit like? What crossed your mind when you saw him walk in?
He is a gentleman and I appreciated the gesture. He has done everything for Real Madrid. He has brought in the best players and I was honored that he included me. Florentino would have done anything for me to sign for Real Madrid  and I will always be grateful. So the fact that he came to my house surprised me at first and made me very happy.

How did he convince you to sign for Real Madrid?
It was easy because my heart was already set on Madrid. He also speaks very good French and we understood each other immediately.

How did you feel on the day of your unveiling?
I had never seen anything like it ever. It was also the first time I joined a new team, but it was very special.

Between that day, your debut in Ireland and your debut in the Bernabeu, which would you prefer to relive?
The presentation, without a doubt.

Kaka to AS

Kaka has just returned from his holidays. In an interview to As the Brazilian player talked about his first days as a Madridista.

Kaka (11)

How do you feel now that you are a Real Madrid player?

It’s excellent. I’ve been greeted warmly by team-mates, coaching staff and everyone who works for the Club. It’s been even better than I expected.

What were your feelings when you met your team-mates?

I met them all last Sunday before the Peace Cup match against Al Ittihad. I went to the stadium and everyone wished me luck in this new stage of my career. I already knew some of them, such as Marcelo, Cristiano Ronaldo or Raul, but it was the first time I met many others and it was fantastic.

And what about your first training session?

It was normal. First, I went to talk with the ones I already knew. I chatted with Marcelo, Pepe, Cristiano… and also with Albiol and Iker Casillas, the last ones to arrive.

Did you ever think you’d play alongside Cristiano, Benzema and many others at Real Madrid?

I had thought about it, but not only with those players. The biggest feeling was signing for Real Madrid. It’s the most important club and you have the chance of being in a squad with magnificent players. I’m happy and satisfied with everything Real Madrid stands for.

How was your presentation?

It was a day full of excitement because of the crowd. I didn’t imagine things were going to be so great.

Di Stefano gave you your shirt. Did he also give you any advice?

No, he just told me that, given the amount of people present, the Bernabeu looked like Maracana during a final.

The Club offered you to wear Zidane’s number ‘5’ shirt, why did you decide not to take it?

It didn’t have anything to do with Zidane. That number is destined for a defensive player in countries like Brazil and Argentina. That’s why I decided to pick number ‘8’, which is also the number I wore when I first started playing for Sao Paulo.

Zidane was celebrated for his elegance both on and off the pitch and you will be compared to him. Is it a big responsibility?

Zidane is a football legend, both in France and at Real Madrid. He is in a league of his own because he made history throughout his career and I still haven’t achieved that. It doesn’t bother me if they compare the two of us. I find it normal. It’s not the first time; it has happened to me everywhere I’ve been. Now that I play for Real Madrid, I hope to use him as a role model so that I can make as much history as he did at the Bernabeu. For me, that will be paramount.

Zizou became a bigger legend playing for Real Madrid. You’ve already won many things too, but your actions here will have much more significant repercussions…

It will all depend on what we achieve on the pitch. If Real Madrid wins, it would mean a big leap forward in my career. This Club is very big worldwide. I hope to conquer many trophies because I will benefit from it on a personal level.

When will you make your debut?

I believe it will be in Toronto, on 7 August. I’ve just returned from my holidays and that’s where it will happen according to my schedule.

Madridismo is anxious to see you on the pitch…

We’re in the middle of the preseason and we have to take one step at a time. We’re playing better each time and the team will improve when all of us get to perform. It’s normal because we’re in the preseason.

Do you remember meeting Florentino in 2002?

I remember it very well. Real Madrid was the doorway to Europe for me at that time. After playing the 2002 World Cup I received an invitation to participate in the Club’s centenary events. On my arrival, Florentino greeted me and since then we’ve had an excellent relationship. We’ve met in restaurants and matches during all this time.

What do you expect of your first year as a Madridista?

I wish to win trophies. The most important of them is the Champions League and we are especially motivated because the final will be held at the Bernabeu. Everyone involved in football knows how difficult it will be to get there, but I truly wish it will happen. And I also would like to win La Liga, of course.

Ronaldo’s arrival in 2001 was highly anticipated. Have you talked to him these days?

Yes, of course I’ve talked to Ronaldo, and also to other former Real Madrid players such as Roberto Carlos, Robinho, Beckham or Baptista.

And what did they tell you?

They all speak good things about Real Madrid. They say it’s different to any other club. Ronaldo has been like a father to me since I first played with the national team in 2002. During the World Cup I was like his son, he always took care of me. He is very dear to me and he helped me take the decision of signing for this Club.

Will you invite him to your debut at the Bernabeu?

He is currently injured, and since he can’t play, it would be great to have him there. I’ll see what I can do.

What would you have liked to be instead of a footballer?

A civil engineer, just like my father.

Give us a quick definition of Raul.

He embodies Real Madrid. He is a symbol.

And what about Cristiano Ronaldo?

He is a great player, very young and with a promising career ahead of him.

And Karim Benzema?

He is talented and young. A great forward.

What do you think of Guti?

He’s very intelligent!

That’s what Ronaldo used to say.

He truly is. He is a quality player.

What’s your opinion on Casillas?

He is helping me the most. We’re training together because we have both just arrived. It was him who took me to the stadium for the two Peace Cup games.

Arbeloa to Realmadrid.com

Alvaro Arbeloa sat down with Real Madrid’s official media outlets for his first interview since returning to the same club that developed him into a world-class football player.

Alvaro Arbeloa (2)

What do you feel when you finally return home?

It’s a great feeling and I am so happy to be here.

You spent several days waiting to see what would happen and hoping for this moment to get here.

This was all I wanted from the moment I knew it was a possibility.

And you aren’t joining a small team, but instead a rather incredible one. That wasn’t the problem.

No that wasn’t the problem. This is an incredible club with a ton of history, but nothing compares to Real Madrid. I am thrilled to be here and anxious to train, play and enjoy.

You always knew you wanted to play for Real Madrid.

I think any youngster, no matter who his favorite team is, would seize the chance to play for Real Madrid, especially when there is such an incredible project in the works.

You must be thinking about your teammates like Raul, Iker, Albiol… but what there is here is in fact a spectacular project.

I was fortunate to have coincided with Zidane, Luis Figo and all the other great during my last stint here. Sharing a dressing room with them really made an impression, so it’s very exciting when you can rejoin a team of such caliber.

It is really like a homecoming for you.

I spent five years here and played for several youth teams before reaching the first team, so I do feel right at home. I don’t just know the players, but a lot of club staff as well. I think I will adjust quickly.

Did you ever imagine that this would happen when you were playing in the academy?

To be honest, no. I did have big dreams, but I never imagined playing for the first team of Real Madrid. What’s more, when you leave the club without having played for the first team, you know it is very hard to return, so my first goal was to seize the chance when it presented itself.

Paco Buyo once said that sometimes the best way to reach a point isn’t a straight line, and it worked for the both of you.

It is definitely my case and surely that of other youth teamers who have returned. I think these last three years have been great for me. I have improved as both a footballer and person, so I am thrilled.

Being promoted with Castilla was a very important time for you even though you left shortly thereafter.

I had many great moments with Castilla, not just when we were promoted, but also in Second Division matches with teammates who are now playing in First Division. We weren’t playing in the top flight, but we accomplished many important goals.

What have you learned over the last few years?

I have become a better footballer and matured. Playing for Liverpool allowed me to play alongside great players. I was eventually called up by the national team and we won the Euro. I have learned a lot, and I hope to prove that I have become a better player.

One good thing about playing for Liverpool is that you get used to playing under tremendous amounts of pressure.

Liverpool is an historic club with a long list of honors. They are the winningest team of all time in England, so I have already dealt with that pressure and I hope it helps me with this new challenge.

What do you prefer, playing as a center back or along the wing?

Wherever. Even as goalkeeper. This is precisely one of the reasons I returned. I left here playing as a center back. Then at Liverpool and with the national team I played along both flanks. I don’t care where I play as long as I play.

How has Real Madrid looked to you this summer?

It’s too early to draw conclusions. It’s important to get fit, for the players to get to know one another, for the coach to review his ideas… I thjnk it will be a while before we see what Pellegrini wants from this team.

We must ask you about Cristiano Ronaldo.

Very. He is an incredible player and I think he will continue proving it here at Real Madrid.

Because stopping him is very difficult…

Florentino Perez fulfills two more objectives with your arrival. He is bringing in another youth teamer and another Spaniard.

I think we Spaniards proved ourselves in the European Championship. We showed just how capable we are, and the youth teamers are proving it more and more each day. All that matters is that we stay on track.

What are your main short term and long term goals?

My goal is to train hard to earn a spot on the team and to help win titles, because that is really all that matters.

Dudek press conference

Jerzey Dudek gave a press conference the day after Real Madrid’s impressive 4-2 viictory over Liga Quito. The keeper said he is excited about the new project.

Jerzy Dudek (8)

You played with Arbeola at Liverpool. How would you describe him?
He is an all-around player. He is making great progress and I think he has enough quality to help this team in defence. He is a very good friend of mine and his international status guarantees his quality.

What do you think of Xabi Alonso?
He has great quality and he is a great guy both on and off the pitch. I hope he joins us despite how hard it is to negotiate with Rafa Benitez.

How have you felt in the first few preseason games?
I’m very happy because I’m playing. I have to use this chance to prove my worth. We have an important clash with Juventus waiting for us and I hope we win the Peace Cup.

How will the new Real Madrid be like?
Our training sessions are very competitive because only 25 of us will remain in the end. We are all doing a good job and I think this team has greater chances of winning titles than in previous years.

Did you expect to extend your contract for another year?
The press speculated on my departure much in the past six months and I believed I wouldn’t stay, that i wouldn’t get a chance to extend my contract. I spoke to my family when Valdano called me and I decided to be part of this exciting project. Both myself and my family are happy about staying in Madrid.

You’ve conceded three goals from set pieces in three games…
I’m not going to worry about that because this is still the preseason. The new pieces on the team have to fit into place and we’ll have to work hard to avoid it from happening again.

How should the Club strengthen the team to make it improve even more?
It is very difficult to give an answer to that question. I think the coach is the one who should decide if we have vulnerable points. We are strong in attack and we must strive to find an offensive and defensive balance. We still have four weeks in which to improve on this.

Do Barcelona have a head start on you this season?
I’m not going to worry about Barcelona. They had a great season last year, but we now have men like Kaka, Cristiano and Benzema.

Who’s better, Eto’o or Ibrahimovic?
You never know who’s the better player. Some days you are great and others you aren’t. They are both very good footballers and the form each of them is in at a given time decides who’s better.

Profile: Alvaro Arbeloa

Álvaro Arbeloa Coca was born on 17 January 1983 in Salamanca, Castilla y León. He began his footballing days at Zaragoza. He eventually joined Real Madrid B in the 2003/04 season and got promoted to the Second Division with the team. He made his mark in the First Division at Deportivo La Coruña and became a household name in Europe with Liverpool. He’s been an undisputed international for Spain since 2008. Arbeola’s versatility allows him to play anywhere in defence. He is a very regular and consistent player that thrives in one-on-ones.

Alvaro Arbeloa (6)

Raised in Zaragoza, Alvaro started playing football in his school, joining Zaragoza’s youth systejm when he was 12 years old. He stayed at the club until the 2001/02 campaign, during which he was signed by Real Madrid’s Under-19 side, then coached by Rafa Benitez. His hard work got him promoted to Real Madrid B -now known as Castilla-. He became the team’s captain and helped it reach the Second Division at the end of the campaign with team-mates such as De la Red, Javi Garcia, Soldado, and Juanfran. Arbeola made his first team debut on 16 October 2004 against Betis when he replaced Mejia. He played one more game with the first team before rejoining Real Madrid B.

Arbeola made one of his most important decisions in 2006 when he decided to sign for Deportivo La Coruña in order to gain experience and have continuity on a First Division team. In 2007, just six months after the move, he joined Rafa Benitez’s Liverpool, making his debut against Newcastle on 10 February and becoming an undisputed starter for the Reds. He didn’t win any titles with Liverpool, but he reached the 2006/07 Champions League final. He played 49 Premiership games -scoring two goals-, 20 in the Champions League, 3 in the League Cup and 1 FA Cup match.

Arbeola was an international for Spain on every youth national team before joining the first team, with whom he made his debut in March 2008 in a friendly against Italy. He had been called-up for a previous match against France, but an injury on his abdomen prevented him from making his debut then.

Alvaro was one of the 23 Spanish players who won the 2008 Euro in Germany. He only played against Greece, but he became an essential player both for Luis Aragones and current coach Vicente del Bosque, who called him up again to play in the Confederations Cup, in which Spain won the Bronze Medal.

Three seasons after leaving his home, Alvaro Arbeola returns to Real Madrid. He is the fourth Spanish arrival on the team since Florentino Perez became President.

Honours:

Spain:

  • UEFA European Championship
  • Winner (1): 2008

Liverpool:

  • UEFA Champions League
  • Runner-up (1): 2007

Alvaro Arbeloa becomes a Madridista!

Just a confirmation. We’ve already spoken enough about this. The official statement was released a few hours back. It read:

Real Madrid C.F and Liverpool F.C. have reached an agreement for the transfer of Alvaro Arbeola to the Spanish club. The player will sign a five-year contract with Real Madrid.

The deal is supposedly worth 4.5m euros. He can play on either side of the defense. He probably should sport number 27. Moreover he was Pellegrini’s personal choice at full back so there is no question as to what his role would be. He has gained all the experience needed at the top level with Liverpool and I see him as a good signing. But his arrival makes the exit of one or two of our players imminent. Heinze anyone?

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Pellegrini press conference

Manuel Pellegrini appeared pleased with his team’s progress during the press conference offered following Real Madrid’s Peace Cup match against Liga de Quito.

Real Madrid 4-2 LDU Quito (7)

What is wrong with Benzema?
He suffered a knock to his tibia. It was a hard tackle that we unfortunately saw on more than one occasion in the match.

Did you put Granero in to unblock the midfield traffic where Robben was?
Robben has something similar to Benzema. He was tackled early on and didn’t want to push it. Changes in these matches don’t have to do with performance. I want the players to have similar amounts of playing time.

What are your thoughts on the doubts created by the defense?
I think our defense tonight was one of the best aspects of the game. We maintained possession and the two goals conceded were off set pieces. It’s not a matter to be discussed now. We had a solid first half and some great second half moments considering we are in the preseason.

Are players like Metzelder expendable?
Every players knows what my thoughts are and this isn’t the place to discuss them. Everyone knows what I want to do.

Is this the Real Madrid we will see this year?
I repeat, we have a month and a half of preparing to do and nothing is definite. We will look at performance, different formulas… It was important to qualify for the semis to maintain our preparation. I think we are improving.

What can you expect from the next opponent?
Juventus is a complicated rival just like Liga was. I hope we can continue improving. All coaches want their team to improve and they aren’t worried about matters that don’t correspond to the moment.

What improvements did you see?
We dominated in the first half but had trouble finishing. We scored with few players and a good team didn’t do much damage. We kept up the pressure in the second half and attacked the goal. The team is learning concepts and improving.

Post-match comments

Esteban Granero was pleased with the team’s performance following the match. Alvaro Negredo made his Santiago Bernabeu debut on Tuesday and did it the best way possible: by scoring a goal. Although happy to have scored his first goal as a Madridista, Cristiano Ronaldo stressed the importance of reaching peak form after Tuesday’s match.

Real Madrid 4-2 LDU Quito (8)

Granero:

We are building rhythm. I was able to play and the fact that we won is all that matters. We just started, so we need to gain momentum and do things right come August. Scoring at the Bernabeu and in front of the home crowd is always nice. The coach asked me to move the ball fast. He is helping me build my confidence and I am doing the best I can. Pellegrini was happy that we won. The match against Juventus will help us continue gaining form. It will be a nice game.

Negredo:

I am proud to have played and scored in the Bernabeu, but just having put on this shirt was incredible. There is no better thing in the world than scoring here. I have been a Madridista all my life. I must wait, be calm, train hard and hopefully I can stay here. I want to do my very best to earn a spot, but I know it’s hard.  I wore number ’17′ today because I am superstitious. I asked the equipment managers for it and it felt better than wearing ’26′. Scoring against Juventus would be amazing, but I like scoring against any team. Juve is one of the greatest teams in the world. it will be a nice match and we hope to make it to the final.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

I am very happy to have scored my first goal for Real Madrid. It isn’t always possible to do those plays because opponents don’t let you. One objective is crossed off the list, but all that matters is getting in form, taking one match at a time and improving. The coach is running tests and we must respect his work. We are just starting off and need to stay calm. This isn’t very important. Winning is important, but even more important is reaching peak form. The match against Juventus is good preparation for La Liga. We are all getting to know one another on the team.

Real Madrid 4-2 Liga Universitaria de Quito

Real Madrid needed a victory to reach the Peace Cups semifinals and they got one thanks to playing spectacular football in the second half and scoring through Cristiano Ronaldo, Esteban Granero, Christoph Metzelder and Alvaro Negredo. Juventus await the Whites in Seville.

Real Madrid 4-2 LDU Quito (1)

New faces on the starting lineup tonight were Salgado, Pepe, Marcelo, Guti, Robben and Higuain. The Whites’ intention from the start was to keep possession as much as possible. Robben had the first chance to score with a shot from outside the box on the 3-minute mark. Following a colossal counterattack by Higuain, Benzema was the next to put keeper Ceballos to the test with a shot tha grazed the crossbar (6′). Liga Quito also proved to be dangerous and kept Real Madrid alert at all times.

Marcelo dribbled past an opponent down the left, circled around another and shot slightly high off target. On the other hand, Pepe -who returned to the Bernabeu for the first time since his league suspension last season- did everything in his power to prevent the Ecuatorians from scoring. His performance was so brilliant that fans on the stands chanted his name. The last chance on goal of the first half came from Bieler, but Dudek saved the day with a phenomenal stretch (38′).

Cristiano Ronaldo met with some disapproval from the crowd at the end of the first half because of his shy performance, but he only needed one minute to unsettle Quito and win favour back in the second part. The Portugues star received the ball down the left and dribbled past two defenders with bicycle kicks, provoking a penalty as soon as he stepped inside the box. He stepped up for the challenge and scored his first goal at his new stadium.

Cristiano played a crucial role in his team’s second goal after a shot of his on target was cleared by keeper Dominguez -who came on in the second half- only to fall at Granero’s feet. The academy player sent it to the back of the net, therefore netting his first goal for the Whites. Liga Quito didn’t give up and cut distances short in a mess of a play on the goal-line (67′). Minutes later, Granero served the corner kick from which Metzelder netted a terrific header. Vera stepped up and again scored for the visiting side on the 85-minute mark, but Alvaro Negredo -who came on for Benzema close to the end of the second part- shattered their hopes for a comeback when he scored from a cross by Drenthe (90′).

Robben and Benzema unable to finish match

Arjen Robben and Karim Benzema were unable to play until the final whistle against Liga Universitaria Quito on Tuesday. The Dutch midfielder received a knock to his right leg and the Frenchman severly bruised his right tibia.

Real Madrid vs Liga Universitaria de Quito | Peace Cup 2009 | Group Stages | Preview

Real Madrid host Liga de Quito on Tuesday with a berth in the Peace Cup semifinals on the line. Pepe is likely to return to action for the Whites, who are in a must-win situation if they are to move on in the competition.

Real Madrid - LDU Quito_Preview

The top spot in Group C is up for grabs as Real welcome Liga Universidad de Quito for the second match of the Peace Cup. Tonight’s visitors currently lead the group after defeating Al-Ittihad last Friday. The Whites find themselves in a must-win situation if they are to move on to the next round, which will be played on Friday in Seville, while the Ecuadorian side only needs a draw to punch its ticket.

Manuel Pellegrini is counting on a similar lineup to that used against Al-Ittihad on Sunday. He has twenty players to choose from, including Pepe who has recovered from a knock received against Shamrock Rovers and was unable to participate over the weekend. Diarra and Van Nistelrooy were not called up as both continue recovering from their respective knee injuries and Heinze, Garay, Van der Vaart and Huntelaar were left off the list due to a coaching decision.

The Chilean coach welcomed back four imporant players on Monday. Iker Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Raul Albiol and Kaka returned from vacation after enjoying a month off but will not see action in tonight’s match.

Pellegrini up against his origins

The second match of the Peace Cup against Liga Deportiva Universitaria Quito may be more than just a friendly for Manuel Pellegrini, whose first coaching job outside his native country of Chile just happened to be Monday’s opponent.

After coaching jobs at Universidad Catolica, Palestino and O’Higgins, Manuel Pellegrini decided to try his luck outside Chile and in 1999/00 crossed the border to take over the reins at Liga Universitaria Quito.

Pellegrini guided the Ecuadorian side to the league title and the quarterfinal round of the Copa Libertadores, where they were eliminated by River Plate.

Pepe called up

The Peace Cup will see Real Madrid host Liga Universitaria de Quito on Tuesday in what will be the Whites’ second and last match of the group stage. Manuel Pellegrini has called up twenty men for the game, including Pepe who steps in for Garay.

SQUAD LIST:

Goalkeepers: Dudek, Adan
Defenders: Marcelo, Salgado, Pepe, Metzelder, Agus, Torres, Drenthe
Midfielders: Gago, Lass, Sneijder, Robben, Guti, Granero, Cristiano Ronaldo
Forwards: Raul, Higuain, Benzema, Negredo

Arbeloa is almost a Madridista again

Alvaro Arbeloa is almost a Madridista again. Yep. The player claims he is close to finalizing his anticipated move to Real Madrid.  Arbeloa has been linked with a move to Real throughout the summer with his chances at Liverpool likely to be more limited this season following the signing of Glen Johnson. It is a known fact that Real are also chasing Arbeloa’s team-mate Xabi Alonso.

Alvaro Arbeloa and Xabi Alonso (1)

A £4.5million fee for Arbeloa has been mooted and the Spain international believes talks over a move to Real are making positive progress. He told Spanish Marca:

At the moment I am focused on Liverpool, but it is true that the deal is close to being completed. We’ll see what happens in the next few days, if we can all make an effort so the the negotiations come to a good end, and we all come out having benefited, which is what everyone wants. I insist that everything is going forwards and everyone is in agreement – I am the one who has the most desire to sign for Madrid. I don’t know what the likelihood is in percentages, it’s a question more for the clubs. But, as I understand, it seems everything is going well and there is little left to resolve. It could all be sealed this week.

Arbeloa has made almost 100 appearances for Liverpool since joining the Premier League club from Deportivo La Coruna in January 2007. He signed for Deportivo from Real, having failed to make an impact in his first spell at the Bernabeu after playing in the youth team for current Liverpool boss Rafa Benitez.

The arrival of Arbeloa will give me joy on two fronts. One, that it would make the exit of Gabriel Heinze imminent and two, it would mean more Spaniards in our first team squad. Last season it was four in Dani Parejo, Ruben de la Red, Sergio Ramos and Iker Casillas. Now we have Albiol, Granero, Negredo and if what Arbeloa claims is true then Arbeloa.

Though Arbeloa’s arrival makes me happy its Xabi’s arrival that I’m looking forward to. Florentino Perez insists he will not pay over the odds for players, amid reports from Spain which suggest Rafa Benitez has put a 48-hour deadline on their pursuit of Xabi Alonso. Perez told the Daily Telegraph:

Some people obviously thought that because we said we wanted more Spanish players, they could ask for fees which don’t correspond to reality. A year ago, certain players we’ve asked about would have cost less than half the price we’re being quoted now. If necessary, we’ll find the Spanish players we would like for the squad in our youth system.

I couldn’t agree with him more. Liverpool thinks we mint money. We’ve got our own debts you red morons!

Anyhoo, a crunch Peace Cup game tonight. The preview to follow.

Till then,

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!

Gago press conference

Fernando Gago held his first press conference of the preseason on Monday.

Fernando Gago (16)
How did you feel in this season’s Santiago Bernabeu debut?

Good. It is hard to assess the team because of all the physical work we have been doing. The first few matches are hard to pull out but it is pretty clear what Pellegrini wants… Possession of the ball.

We didn’t see the best version of Real Madrid last night.

That is football for you. It is hard to evaluate preseason matches. All that matters is being in good form heading into the first match of the season. We must all contribute our share.

What are your thoughts on Cristiano Ronaldo and Benzema?

They are great players. They are very talented and I am sure we will enjoy watching them play.

Today was the first day with Kaka.

He just returned from holiday, but we all know how important he is to this team. He is a great player.

How do you think Liga Universitaria de Quito will play tomorrow?

We need to focus on finding our rhythm, but we know they will do their best to  put up a good fight.

Pellegrini spoke highly of the pressure the team put on in the first half of last night’s match.

We need to get used to the concepts the new coach wants to implement. We applied pressure until we felt the wear and tear in our legs. We lacked accuracy in the final third, but that it expected at this point in the season.

How do you find the team this preseason?

Getting La Liga off to a good start is all that counts. We must remain calm and understand that we are a good team.

Might the possible arrival of Xabi Alonso affect you in any way?

Real Madrid needs to have the best players and his arrival would be another reason to fight for a spot.

Pellegrini press conference

Manuel Pellegrini was happy with his team’s performance against Al-Ittihad.

Real Madrid 1-1 Al-Ittihad (8)

Are you happy with the team? What do you think it lacks right now?
I’m happy because these are preseason games and it’s normal for both good and bad things to happen at this stage. We naturally have to improve on a lot of things, but this is not the time to do so. We are working on strengthening the squad and on resistance. We won’t find it easy to open up a game until we start working on speed and precision.

What was it you liked most and least of the match?
I liked how we recovered the ball on their half of the pitch during the first half. We pressurized well whenever we lost possession. I didn’t like the fact that we nearly conceded two goals due to distractions. Our opponents hardly had chances on goal before the draw and they had two dangerous opportunities to win at the end.

You coached Liga Quito in the past. How does it feel to face that team?
I was lucky to coach a good team for two years. It is a good club. I’m glad they’re in the Peace Cup and it makes me happy to have the chance of meeting people that have been important in my career once again.

What can Kaka do for the team? Will he play in the next game?
We all know how good and decisive he is. Our internationals won’t have chances of playing in the Peace Cup because they will only just begin to train in the next few days. We take this tournament seriously, but we are not going to alter the preparation we’re doing. We had two sessions on Friday and we had already decided the substitutions we would make tonight. Our internationals will work intensely for ten days to be ready for their first match in Canada.

Will you make changes in the lineup to win the next game?
We will make changes, but not in order to win. I had already decided which changes I was going to make tonight; I didn’t want neither Cristiiano nor Benzema to play more than 60 minutes. Those who played 90 minutes today won’t be starters on Tuesday.

Which Al Ittihad player did you like the most?
I liked the whole team in general. Gabriel Calderon coaches them well. I was interested in the number ’11′ and number ’9′ players, but I would need to see them more often to determine if they could play in La Liga.

Did Al Ittihad surprise you?
No. We knew they played well and that they would be very motivated to earn a good result.

Do you fear results could affect your planning?
I have never feared anything. I won’t change my methods. We are not forced to earn good results at this stage; they are just an anecdote. We won’t change our plan just to win a match in July. I’m not worried about any individual performance in particular; we are working on the team as a whole.

What did you think of Granero? Is there special significance in the fact that he was wearing Van der Vaart’s number ’23′ shirt?
It means nothing regarding Van der Vaart because he isn’t playing the tournament. I think Granero made good changes to the team’s style.

Post-match comments

Academy players Granero and Agus made their Santiago Bernabeu debut against Al Ittihad. Cristiano Ronaldo was happy with his debut match at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The player said that getting back into shape is what really matters at this stage.

Real Madrid 1-1 Al-Ittihad (6)

Granero:

We all wanted to win. I would have loved it in my Bernabeu debut, but we shouldn’t worry about it. This is the preseason and everything has just started. We’ll gradually get into shape and grow used to playing games. I was unlucky with my shot on goal. I thought it was going in. I’m going to fight to have a spot on the stating 11, but it won’t be easy because there are great players on the team. I’m going to give my all to convince the coach. Playing at this stadium wearing this shirt is everybody’s dream, and it is particularly special for an academy player. This is the happiest day of my life.

Agus:

This is a great day for me because I made my debut at the Bernabeu after being at the Club for four years. This is what I’ve been waiting for. I think people like the academy and they are happy with our presence on the squad, but all of us, youth teamers and others alike, form a team. It’s a shame that I came on for an injured player, but you have to be ready to help the team whenever it needs you.

I would have liked to win in my debut, but we shouldn’t worry about it. This is the start of the preseason. It is never easy for footballers to play a preseason match. I think the fans had fun and we hope to make them enjoy themselves even more on Tuesday.

Cristiano Ronaldo:

We wanted to win, but we faced a tough team. It doesn’t matter because this is still the preseason and the important thing is for us to get back into shape. I’m happy. We have to think about reaching good form. We’ve only been working for 17 days and we have to work hard to be in optimum for at the start of La Liga. We all have to improve, not just myself and Benzema. We are working very hard and playing friendly games. It is always important to win fixtures, but we have to focus on gaining resistance level for La Liga. Many new players have arrived on the team and we are beginning to understand each other. I think it’s natural that our hard work still doesn’t show. I am happy with my debut at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium. The crowd applauded. I had a lot of fun.

Real Madrid 1-1 Al-Ittihad

The Santiago Bernabeu Stadium greeted the new Real Madrid. Manuel Pellegrini, Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Garay and Esteban Granero made their debut at the White Colosseum. Al Ittihad pulled no punches because they risked being eliminated of the Peace Cup with a defeat after their 3-1 loss to Liga Quito. Raul and Hicham scored for both sides.

Real Madrid 1-1 Al-Ittihad (1)

Metzelder and Garay formed the centre of the defence, flanked by Drenthe and Miguel Torres. The first dangerous play from the Whites came from the Lass-Benzema connection. The midfielder saw Sneijder was alone and served him the ball. The Dutchman shot on target, putting keeper Zaid’s reflexes to the test (14′). Cristiano Ronaldo also had a go in the next venture in attack, but his ball strayed off course and a corner kick was awarded.

Real Madrid dominated throughout the match, but the Saudi defence formed an impenetrable wall that tarnished their finishing touches. Benzema tried to score from a corner kick by Sneijder on the 23-minute mark, but the keeper again saved the day. Two minutes later, Raul forced the goalie to make another stretch with a terrific shot  from outside the box. Ronaldo managed to dribble past defenders down the right wing in the final minutes of the first half, but one of his great crosses found no striker (41′). Benzema and Cristiano triangulated the ball twice and the Portuguese star forced Zaid to make a save on the goal-line.

Agus came on for Garay at the start of the second half. Pellegrini’s men kept looking for an opener and soon found it when Benzema served an assist to Raul, who defeated Zaid after turning on the ball inside the box (9′). The Saudi team never gave up and netted the equaliser through Hicham, who finished off Saleh’s corner kick with a header (17′).

Esteban Granero made his debut and played alongside Guti and Lass in midfield. The new signing had the best chance on goal when his powerful 30-metre shot hit the crossbar on the 77-minute mark. Real Madrid kept having chances through Robben (79′) and Raul (82′), but Zaid proved to be unbeatable.

Garay injured with strained adductor

Garay was injured during the match against Al Ittihad. The defender strained his right adductor and was replaced by youth teamer Agus.

Lineups:

Real Madrid: Dudek, Garay (Agus 45′), Metzelder, Miguel Torres, Drenthe, Lass, Gago (Guti 65′), Sneijder (Granero 74′), Cristiano Ronaldo (Higuain 65′), Raúl, Benzema (Robben 65′);

Al-Ittihad: Mabrouk Zayed, Hamad Al Montashari, Saleh Al-Saqri, Obaid Al-Shumrani, Rashid Raheeb (Ali Al-Zobaydi 91′), Sultan Al-Namri (Meshal Al Saeid 80′), Manaf Aboshgair, Ahmad Hadid, Saud Kearairi, Nayef Hazazi (Talal Al-meshaal 72′), Hicham Aboucherouane;

Real Madrid vs Al-Ittihad | Peace Cup 2009 | Group Stages | Preview

The Santiago Bernabeu will open its gates again tonight to host the Peace Cup, the most important unofficial tournament in the world. The Whites will face Saudi side Al-Ittihad in what will be Cristiano Ronaldo’s and Karim Benzema’s first game at the stadium.

Real Madrid - Al-Ittihad_Preview

Some of the best teams in the world get together every couple of years to celebrate the Peace Cup. It is like a small summer Champions League in which each club showcases its weaponry for the coming season while yet at a preparation stage. This is the first time the tournament is being held outside Asia.

Manuel Pellegrini still won’t be able to count on the Confederations Cup internationals -Kaka, Albiol, Casillas, Ramos-, but he will use the match to see how fit his men are at this stage and how well they are assimilating the style he wants to instill on the team.

Van Nistelrooy, Diarra and Pepe are still recovering from their injuries, but recent signing Esteban Granero has made the cut and may well be able to make his debut at the Bernabeu. Al Ittihad have dominated in their national league throughout the season and also won the Cup. They are one of the best Asian teams and many great players, like Roberto Donadoni, have chosen to end their careers there. They lost 3-1 to Liga Quito in their first Peace Cup match.

Al Ittihad was founded in Jeddah in 1928. It is the oldest club in Saudi Arabia, having football, basketball, water-polo, ping pong, volleyball and swimming teams. Ittihad means ‘unity’ in Arab and the club was founded following the idea of joining several teams from Mecca and Jeddah. Many of the best footballers in Saudi Arabia have played for the team, such as 2005 Best Asian Player award winner Hamad Al Montashari, who has 36 international caps and has scored 6 goals for his country. He also participated in the 2006 Germany World Cup.

Granero makes the cut

Esteban Granero, Benzema and Cristiano Ronaldo could make their Santiago Bernabeu debut against Al-Ittihad on Sunday. Van Nistelrooy and Mahamadou Diarra aren’t fit to play yet and have been dropped from the squad list. Palanca and Pepe will also miss the match due to injuries.

SQUAD LIST

Goalkeepers: Dudek, Adan;
Defenders: Salgado, Marcelo, Metzelder, Torres, Garay, Agus;
Midfielders: Gago, Lass, Sneijder, Robben, Guti, Drenthe, Granero;
Forwards: Cristiano Ronaldo, Raul, Higuain, Benzema, Negredo;

Dani Parejo seals move to Getafe

Its official. We have successfully sold yet another player. This time its young Daniel Parejo who is moving to city neighbors Getafe and is deemed to be Granero’s replacement there. He is the second Madridista to move to Getafe this season itself following the clandestine move of Jordi Codina.

There is no official statement on the club’s website yet nor do I have the details about the switch. On behalf of Hala Madrid I’d like to thank Dani for his services to the club and also wish him all the best for his future. May we see you here again soon.

Huntelaar out => Arbeloa in

A nice and warm evening out here, I hope its the same there,

Klaas-Jan Huntelaar is leaving. The final nail in the coffin of the whole Huntelaar saga was Pellegrini’s statement in his press conference earlier today that read:

I’ve spoken to every player and Huntelaar knows what I want. We have many strikers on the team and they can’t all stay. Everybody knows how good he is. We have an excess of strikers right now and he knows there is no place for him.

Now that was frank. I am quite sure that neither Schuster nor Juande would have put across the message that way. They would have been coy before actually saying such stuff. And this just makes me like Manu Pellegrini all the more. Infact I would like to go on record saying that I am officially a fan of his.

Anyhoo, coming back to Huntelaar, I do feel sad for the bloke. He spent only half a season here at Real and scored 8 good goals. He has an eye for goal and would definitely have done much better if he had been given the time and the opportunity. It is sad that he has to leave. But now the question is where? It is imminent that he doesn’t want to move to a non Champions League club after he rejected Sttutgart’s bid. Sp*rs were after him apparently. But Harry Redknapp has admitted that striking a deal will be difficult due to the Dutchman’s wage demands. That’s true. Paying him as much as Real is will be tough but he has to move somewhere. AC Milan too were looking to sign him but it was only on loan and that too broke as they went after Luis Fabiano. He basically is running out of suitors. Nevertheless I just hope things are sorted out soon and that we know what our squad is going to be like ASAP.

If Huntlaar’s departure is inevitable so is Arbeloa’s return, apparently. The former Madridista is likely to be the third returning Madridista after Negredo and Granero. Arbeloa’s representative, Manuel Garcia Quilon, remains in discussions with the Primera Liga giants and expects a conclusion by the start of next week. Quilon told The Sun:

Discussions with Real are not over and I expect a solution early next week.

Jorge Valdano has also confirmed that the 26-year-old, who played for the club in 2004-05, remains a transfer target. Valdano said:

Arbeloa is a basic part of our plans.

Arbeloa has one year remaining on his contract at Anfield and faces a fight for a first-team place on Merseyside following the arrival of Glen Johnson.

Xabi Alonso saga is still going on as Benitez is now trying to convince the ace midfielder to stay at Anfield. More on that on Marca.

The Peace Cup has commenced. Last night Juve beat Sevilla 2-1 in Group A and Liga de Quito beat Al-Ittihad 3-1 in Group B in which we are the third team. We kick-off our campaign tomorrow night against Al-Ittihad.

More on that game later,

Till then,

Para Siempre Blanco!

Hala Madrid!!
