Osasuna vs Real Madrid | Spanish Primera Liga | Round 38 | Preview
Tonight will decide who stays in the First Division and who gets relegated. Osasuna risk playing in the Second Division next year and will do their best to defeat Real Madrid, who risk nothing.

The Whites won their last league title in Pamplona last year by defeating Osasuna with goals from Robben and Higuain. The Madridistas fought hard to win the title this season, but their incredible run in the second leg wasn’t enough against an incredibly solid Barcelona.
Real Madrid have known for weeks that they will be runners-up this year. Their recent defeats force them to win their final game of the season at a stadium in which they haven’t lost in five years (one draw, four consecutive victories).
Several players will miss the clash: Cannavaro (strain), Ramos (niggle on the groin), Heinze (strain), Dudek (gastroenteritis), Guti (niggle on an ankle), Gago (tonsilitis), Sneijder (muscle tear), Pepe and Javi Garcia (both suspended). Marcelo, Van der Vaart, Metzelder and Drenthe have recovered in time for the match and have made the squad list alongside Castilla’s Gary, Velayos and Tebar.
Osasuna depend on themselves to stay in the First Division, but if they lose against Real Madrid, they will need Sporting to lose, Getafe to be defeated by Racing by more than one goal, and Betis to take at least one point against Valladolid.
Coach Jose Antonio Camacho will be able to count on Azpilicueta, Nekounam (8 goals) and Pandiani (11 strikes), who have suffered from niggles all week. The line-up will probably be the same that earned them a victory at Camp Nou last weekend. Ludovic Delporte, ‘Dady’ and Roversio Rodrigues will miss the match because of injuries.
Drenthe has recovered from tonsilitis in time for the match in Pamplona and has been included on the squad list. Ramos, Fabio Cannavaro, Sneijder, Dudek, Gago, Heinze and Guti will miss the clash due to injuries and niggles. Pepe is currently with the Portuguese national side and Javi Garcia is suspended for the match. Castillas’ Velayos, Gary and Tebar have made the cut.
SQUAD LIST
Defenders: Salgado, Marcelo, Drenthe, Metzelder, Torres, Gary, Velayos;
Midfielders: Lass, Robben, Parejo, Faubert, Tebar, Van der Vaart;
Forwards: Raul, Saviola, Hunterlaar, Higuain;
Juande press conference
Juande Ramos gave his last pre-match press conference of the season. The coach said the team’s run in the second leg has been successful.

Has it been hard to come up with the squad list given the many injuries the team sustains?
We’ve come up with an 18-man squad list, which proves we have enough players to have a solid line-up in order to try to play a good game and earn a good result in Pamplona.
Isn’t it too much of a coincidence to sustain so many injuries in the last game?
I believe in my men’s professional attitude. I have a positive way of thinking and I believe those who can’t play really can’t.
What does Guti have? Have you spoken to him?
Guti has a niggle on one of his ankles. Every player is the same and I make all of my decisions in the interest of Real Madrid. I only worry about the team as a whole.
Do you have a feeling this might be your last press conference as Real Madrid’s coach?
I don’t. This is just the last game of the season. I still have one month left on my contract and I don’t know what will happen when it’s over. My duty is to be at the helm of the team until 30 June.
What would you think if the Club signs Pellegrini?
He is a magnificent coach who’s done a great job at Villarreal, but the decision has nothing to do with me.
How would you describe your stint at Real Madrid?
I think it has been successful. We were fifth on the table, nine points behind Barcelona when we arrived. We played at a very high level for five months and we’ve taken more points than in the previous two seasons. Our numbers are very positive. When the Club signed us people doubted the team could react the way it did. That’s why we were offered a bonus if we managed to qualify for next season’s Champions League. If we don’t count the games that followed our Bernabeu clash against Barcelona, which I call the ‘trash minutes’ because nothing was at stake for us, I would say the team has done an exceptional job.
Would you have liked to coach the team from the start of the campaign?
Every coach would like to start his own project. I didn’t take part in the building of this squad and I would have liked to. Nevertheless, these players have managed to play at a very high level.
Do you feel you’ve missed the chance to make history at Real Madrid?
I knew I was going to be here six months when I signed; many things have happened to the institution since. The Madridistas I have spoken to all say I am ready to coach Real Madrid. I don’t feel I’ve missed anything. I may get another chance or at a different club of equal prestige.
If you leave now, would you return if the Club called you again in the future?
I’m a professional, and as such I’m always ready to hear any offers. I can only say now that I am delighted with my stint at Real Madrid.
Barcelona have played at a different level this season…
I have already congratulated them for their football; they’ve won every title and I’m happy for Pep and some of the players I know there. Unfortunately for us, we had to fight against a superb Barcelona, one of the best there’s ever been. Our excellent numbers have been tarnished by Barcelona.
Heinze press conference
Heinze stressed the professional nature of every Real Madrid player during his press conference, adding they will do their best to defeat Osasuna on Sunday.

How have you prepared for the match against Osasuna, who will risk everything on Sunday?
It is our duty to win always and to prove we are ready to play any game. There’s more at stake for Osasuna, but we risk wearing this shirt and what that represents. There’s much at stake for both teams on different levels.
Is this season being hard for you on a personal level?
It’s part of the game and we know that. Things change when you risk nothing. Having no goals or possibilities of winning something makes things fall by their own weight. I’m not interested about what people are saying.
Do the lists of players that may leave the club bother you?
They don’t because I know how things work. I know how I am and what I do for the team.
By winning in Pamplona you could have the best second leg in the team’s history…
That will be so even if we lose; I’m not ready to disregard everything we’ve achieved this season. That’s just a fact, but also an extra incentive to achieve something nice. We must give our all while wearing this shirt.
How does the squad feel?
We’re sad for losing the last few games, especially the one against Barcelona, which ended our great streak. It was all over after that game. We’re hurt, but we think about the following match each week in order to win.
Has this been the toughest season of your career?
It’s been a strange and tough campaign because of everything that’s happened. Players have to play and win, but I feel attached to the Club and I am fond of the people here, so I’m interested in other things as well. It hasn’t been an ideal year for such an important club.
Several teams risk relegation this weekend. Should they be worried about how well you’ll play?
We have a professional squad; people shouldn’t question it despite the results. I can assure you the men that will play will be very professional. We respect our opponents. There’s much at stake for us too because we defend this shirt.
What did you think of Manchester United’s performance in the Champions League final?
I expected more from them, but Barcelona also deserve credit. They played a great game. Manchester United’s coach said the best team that night had been Barcelona.
You have a year left on your contract. Would you like to stay?
I have a year left, I’m happy and I feel well. The new people at the Club will have their opinion and I will give them mine. I hope I can stay here another year because I feel fine and strong. I would very much like to stay for another year.
Messi and Cristiano will fight for the Ballon d’Or. Who do you think should win?
Leo deserves it because of everything he’s done. Cristiano won last year and Messi has achieved great things this season. I think he deserves to be acknowledged for that.
‘Excitement Returns’
Florentino Perez presented the people that would form his Board of Directors if he is chosen by the Club Members as the institution’s next President. Perez gave a speech in which he set the grounds for the project he wishes to carry out at Real Madrid.

Florentino Perez’s board would be as follows:

- Pedro Lopez Jimenez (Member no. 15,069),
- Jose Sanchez Bernal (Member no. 15,133),

- Nicolas Martin-Sanz Garcia (Member no. 24,362).
Extracts from Florentino Perez’s speech
This is one of the most exciting challenges there is, and all those who accompany me in the presentation of this candidacy have one thing in common: loyalty and compromise with our club and our Club Members. Some may still be wondering why we want to return. The answer is simple. We want to recover as soon as possible the values and the greatness that have marked the history of this club. We want to work to make Real Madrid a strong, united and exemplary institution once again.
This board knows its goal is greater than ever, but we love this club and we have the necessary will and strength to achieve it. We are united by our love for Madridismo and our conviction of knowing what to do during such a difficult time. We will work hard to put Real Madrid back in the position it should have never left. Real Madrid is the most important sport institution in the world. Its history makes us proud and has been possible thanks to visionary men ahead of their time, such as Santiago Bernabeu and Alfredo di Stefano, living legend that embodies the values of Real Madrid.
If this board is chosen, we will build a spectacular team with the best players, our youth system will be a sign of the Club’s identity and we will work hard every day to have state-of-the-art facilities. We must be leaders on a financial level and ethics must be an essential part of our behaviour. A code of conduct will be imposed for any actions that represent our club. This is the path that will lead us to a permanent search for victories and respect for our followers. Real Madrid was built with values none of us, Members and intitutional leaders alike, must ever forget.
Respect for our opponents and a hunger for victory will be our tools. There are certain patterns of behaviour that must never take place again, so we will provide the Club with the necessary strength to avoid peculiar ambitions that have nothing to do with the history of Madridismo, and we will also work to make our organisational model stronger. Our goal is to recover an ethical code to guarantee spotless behaviour from the President and his Board. Transparency, rigour and clarity will be the main pillars of our work.
Real Madrid is part of world heritage. Solidarity must be one of our signs of identity and we must be even more motivated to reach out to places that need help. It will be a tough, long road filled with obstacles, but we have the right project and the right passion to see it through. Winning isn’t enough for us Madridistas. We want Real Madrid to win, thrill and convince us at the same time. This can’t happen without your help. Our greatest goal is for excitement to return.
Elsewhere, on Cristiano Ronaldo:
He’s a player that would be very good if he came to Real Madrid. What I know is what I’ve read, that there is an agreement by means of which he would come for £80million. Next week we will look at the numbers and nobody should doubt that we are going to design with our sporting advisors a spectacular project.
On Kaka:
Until the competitions finish we are not going to talk with the clubs, but I’ve always spoken of my great relationship with (Milan vice-president Adriano) Galliani and this relationship maybe makes it easier that Kaka comes to Madrid. I’ve talked with Galliani many times about football and also about Kaka, but this is a theme that we have to postpone until after Sunday.
Guti, Ramos and Torres to Realmadrid.com
Once again, Real Madrid players didn’t fail to attend a charitable event. Guti, Ramos, Torres, Cannavaro and Casillas were some of the footballers that participated in the IV Golf Tournament organised by the Fundacion Menudos Corazones. They took the chance to congratulate Barcelona for their Champions League triumph.

Guti
I’m neither happy nor sad. I just want to congratulate Barcelona for their victory because they’ve had a great year and made history. I feel healthy envy because they are a great team that has a great relationship with its coach. That shows on the pitch. We want this season to end in order for a better one to come under the banner of a new project. New people willing to make a new team that may win the league and be an important European side will bring a lot of energy to achieve their goals. That’s the least a club like Real Madrid can ask for. A new and exciting era is dawning. Florentino brought the best players and we had great times with him at the helm. I think he will sign the best players around and that’s what we all want. We want a strong squad capable of fighting for the three titles.
Torres
Barcelona deserved to win because they played very well. We are slightly jealous of their spectacular season. We are anxious for the new campaign to start and we hope we can achieve what they did this year. The important thing about being at Real Madrid is to set ourselves challenges and achieve them. Barcelona have made things hard for us; the only choice we have is to do what they’ve done. I guess Florentino has great ideas to improve on what’s happened. We hope things change next year and that we do what we must do. Real Madrid forms excellent players that could make it to an important final in the future.
Ramos
My goal now is to end the season by playing well for Spain. I hope there’s a good project for the coming season and that our good streak returns. There’s nothing we can do now. Real Madrid should aspire to win every championship. People should know we’ll fight to win them all next year.
Last man standing
There were four in the beginning viz. Juan Onieva, Eugenio Martinez Bravo, Eduardo Garcia and Florentino Perez running for the post of President of Real Madrid Club de Futbol. Each made promises. Each said they’d get the Santiago Bernabeu faithfuls the players they wanted. Each guaranteed that they would bring back the glory years. Each of them assured that they had a ‘project’. But all of it has turned out be a fallacy. Right now only one man is left standing.
FLORENTINO PEREZ
Florentino Perez is currently the only man in the running for the Real Madrid presidency after Eduardo Garcia confirmed he was pulling out of the election race. He has, therefore, moved a step closer to returning to the Bernabeu as the other two hopefuls, Juan Onieva and Eugenio Martinez Bravo, had already withdrawn. As it stands, Perez – whose €57.4million (£50m) bank guarantee has met neccesary stipulations – is on course to be confirmed as Real president on Monday unless another candidate presents a bid before a deadline of 31st May. If there are two or more valid bids, then elections will be held on 14th June.
Perez was previously at Real between 2000 and 2006 when he marked his tenure with a number of dazzling signings, dubbed the ‘galacticos’. And he is promising a return to the style of the beginning of the Millennium, saying:
We will build a spectacular team with top-notch players. We have set up a strong and stable sporting project which will be able to call upon footballers who will turn each Real Madrid match into a fascinating rendezvous.
Meanwhile the electoral board reassured the fact that Florentino had everything that was needed to become the President again:
The Electoral Board, which met on 28 May 2009, wishes to make the following announcement:
- The candidacy to the Presidency and the Board of Directors of Club Member Florentino Perez Rodriguez was presented before the deadline and had all the requisites stipulated by the Electoral Rules and Regulations.
- The Electoral Board received a report of the Liga de Futbol Profesional certifying that said candidacy’s pre-guarantee complies with all the terms, conditions and sum of money stipulated by the 10/1990 Law.
The Electoral Board has therefore unanimously decided to:
PROCLAIM THE CANDIDACY LED BY FLORENTINO PEREZ RODRIGUEZ AS VALID, according to sections b) and c) in Article 40 of the Club’s Statutes.
Regards,
Juan Raul Castellanos Tarrago
SECRETARY OF THE ELECTORAL BOARD
REAL MADRID CLUB DE FUTBOL
Its time to start counting the stars again people. Kaka, Ribery, Messi, Ronaldo…
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
The first of the things to come…
We are having a very mediocre season. Yes we won a lot of games in 2009 but it was of no use in the end. To top that we are now on a losing streak while Barcelona just completed a treble for the season, something which even Real Madrid has never done. We all know that Barcelona is a mediocre team. Losing to them amongst other very mediocre teams like Valencia, Villareal, Mallorca means we are even worse than they are. The Spanish League isn’t all that strong as it used to be ergo we won the league for the past two seasons using a similar team with less injured players. But now a team like Barcelona has suddenly come out of the blue winning everything possible. We cannot just stand and stare at them doing us. We need to respond. The only way we can respond is by rebuilding this team full of players with feet as strong as glass. Major rebuilding beckons! Election or no election the board has to do something about it. Also there is the fact that we haven’t done anything at all in Europe for the past 20 million years, oh yeah, except for the nine titles of course.
The other teams in Europe like Juve and Bayern which got the doing last season in both the domestic league and Europe are quickly bolstering their squad for next season. Having already signed Anatoliy Tymoshchuk from FC Zenit St. Petersburg, Ivica Olić from Hamburger SV, Alexander Baumjohann from VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach, Bayern München are set to complete the signing of VfB Stuttgart striker Mario Gómez with the club declaring that the deal is “now little more than a formality”. The two clubs are reported to have agreed a €30m fee for the Germany international. Andreas Görlitz will also return to the club following his loan spell with Karlsruher SC. Whereas Juve after bringing free-agent Fabio Cannavaro back to Turin last week, Juventus have made their second signing ahead of the 2009/10 season by acquiring the services of Brazilian playmaker Diego from Werder Bremen for €24.5m. The 24-year-old former Santos FC and FC Porto midfielder has signed a five-year deal with the Bianconeri after undergoing a medical in Turin.
We too have had our share of transfer news. We refused to give Canna a new deal. He thus became a free agent. The only player we have tried to sign is Luis Antonio Valencia from Wigan Atheltic!
But with the elections due in June and Perez most likely to reign again we should see refusal of giving Fabio a new deal as a part of the new project and as the first amonst the things to come.
We will rule the world again.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Van Nistelrooy to Realmadrid.com
Ruud van Nistelrooy has recovered the smile that was lost six months ago after learning he would miss the rest of the season. It has been a long and arduous healing process, and it would have been much harder without the support from fans. In an exclusive interview with realmadrid.com, the Real Madrid striker made it clear that he is eager to return to the pitch of the Santiago Bernabeu.

First of all, how do you feel?
Fine now. I’ve spent the last six months recovering and the worst is now behind me.
How was the day to day work? Did you put in many hours?
The first phase was the most difficult because I was still on crutches. I did eight hours of passive rehab on my knee each day and spent a lot of time getting massages from physiotherapists. Then I began working on my physique with a stationary bike, elliptical machine and water exercises. I’ve been increasing the load since February and working hard on cardio, increasing my stamina and building muscle mass. It was a hard process, but I can now say that I am ready to begin running.
When will we see you back on the pitch?
I will start jogging slowly next week and will increase the pace on a daily basis. The team’s preseason begins around the middle of July, and if everything goes as planned I hope to be back in action with the squad in August. I am so anxious to return.
Have you thought a lot about the night you were injured against Juventus? Nobody thought it was such a severe injury.
I wasn’t injured during that match. It happened during the first half of the match in Turin and I played through the pain. Then I played the match at the Bernabeu although everyone knew I wasn’t well. It was an important match. I wanted to play and the club wanted me to play.
Do you regret it?
No.
When they told you they had to operate on the same knee, did you think back to the injury sustained back in 2000?
We didn’t think the meniscus was affected and that I would return within six to eight weeks. Then they saw a more severe problem, the cartilage, and I knew it would take a lot more time. I had to lie down and have a glass of water because it was a tremendous shock. I spoke to the doctor to ask him how long I would be out. All that mattered was my knee; my life. I was told it would take about nine months, that my knee would be as good as new and that I could return to football. I knew I would have to work hard, but I immediately focused on recovering and returning as soon as possible.
The doctor who performed the surgery said you are as strong at 32 as you were at 24, when you suffered your first injury, and that you would return to your good old self because you were so eager to play.
Yes. I am doing everything I can for that to be the case. I have sometimes asked myself, “Why do I do all this?” And the answer is to return to football. I still haven’t done everything I set out to accomplish and there is a lot left for me to win on the pitch. That is my main goal.
Ronaldo went through the same hell last year. He made it back, is scoring goals and is even thinking about playing in the 2010 World Cup. Perhaps we will see you back in action with the Netherlands.
You never know! Examples like Ronaldo are great. I was able to speak to other players who dealt with the same injury and the message was clear: know you can recover from it. When you work hard and do what you are supposed to, you will return.
Has the way you have taken care of yourself throughout your career also helped?
I think so. I am in good shape, albeit different. Things like that help. I am ready to run whenever I given the green light.
They say that it is during the worst of times that you realize how much people care about you. Who has been your biggest support?
My wife and family mostly. They know the extent of the matter, that I want to play every week and that that is how I enjoy living. It’s tough, but they have been a tremendous help during these difficult times. My teammates have also been there, like when they took to the pitch while wearing t-shirts to cheer me up. I have received hundreds of emails and card from fans as well. I have a huge scrapbook where they are saved and I get choked up every time I read it.
Have you noticed the care and support from everyday fans?
It has been incredible. People have treated me so well. They tell me that they miss me and that I need to return soon. It’s people like that who motivate me to go to the gym every day and to do another two hours of work.
The Sanitas-Real Madrid Medical Staff have also helped.
I have been in good hands ever since I was injured. The doctors have guided and supported me throughout the process. I can’t name any one specific person. All the doctors and therapists have been very involved in my recovery.
Do you want to continue playing for Real Madrid next season?
Yes. Of course. I have another year left on my contract and I am very happy. There isn’t a doubt in my mind that I will stay. I will get better and I will play again at the Santiago Bernabeu.
Is it hard to watch the team play on television?
It’s worse than being at the stadium. As the weeks went by and we cut points off of Barcelona’s lead, I thought we would win the league. We weren’t winning matches in easy fashion. The team had to battle in each match. We were right there, but everything was pretty much lost after the Clasico. With everything that the club went through, like a change in coach, change in president… you have to admit that the players managed to focus on training, playing and winning. We were right there until the end. I think the team did a great job.
Robben said that football is all about revenge and that the team will be even more hungry to win titles next season.
It’s not a matter of desire. We will start from scratch next season. There will be a new president, new sporting director, possibly a new coach and new players. It will be a new chapter for the club, so let’s see how it goes. We have to look ahead and be professional.
It would be nice to make it to the Champions League final, which next year will be played at the Bernabeu.
It’s an objective that may help in one way or another, but all that matters to me right now is my every day work. I want a work plan, for the team to have a clear system to work with and for all of us to fight together for the titles in play.
Tonight Barcelona and Manchester get their turn.
I am supporting my former Manchester teammates. I think Barcelona need to have a special night to win the Champions League. They cannot beat Manchester if they don’t play their best football. I think Manchester is the favorite.
Have you spoken to Scholes, Giggs or Neville?
Yes. I have spoken to some of them and they are very motivated. It’s their second consecutive final. No one has won back-to-back Champions Leagues in a long time. They are familiar with the way Barcelona play and know they are a strong team.
Where Are They Now: Rafael Alkorta
Rafael Alkorta Martinez (born September 16, 1968 in Bilbao, Biscay) is a former Spanish footballer, who played mainly as a central defender for Real Madrid between 1993 and 1997 winning the league twice and the Supercopa once in his 107 appearances for the club. He scored only 4 goals during his time at the Bernabeu.

Club career
Alkorta began playing as a junior with Athletic de Bilbao in 1978, and made his professional debut with the club’s second team seven years later, making 40 appearances before being promoted by Howard Kendall to the senior team for 1987-88. He subsequently made 172 first division appearances, and established himself as an outstanding man marker.
Alkorta attracted the attention of Real, for whom he signed in 1993-94. At Real, he formed a notable partnership with Fernando Hierro. After 107 league appearances and two titles, he returned to Athletic in 1997-98, helping the side finish second in the first season upon his return. He went on to appear regularly in the following years but, after only six matches in 2001-02, decided to retire from the game.
International career
An international since May 26, 1990 (a 1-0 friendly away win against Yugoslavia), Alkorta made 54 appearances for Spain until 1998. He played in three World Cups – 1990, 1994 and 1998 – and Euro 96, also representing Spain at U-16, U-18 and U-21 levels.
Honours
- Spanish League: 1994-95, 1996-97
- Spanish Supercup: 1994
Parejo press conference
Daniel Parejo was sad for not being able to give the fans a victory against Mallorca last night and praised Fabio Cannavaro for everything he’s done for the Club.

Yesterday was a sad farewell for the team…
Yes, it wasn’t pleasant. We were all sad after the match. We wanted a victory because the fans deserved more. They’ve supported us all season and we were sad after the game because we would have liked to give them a victory.
How can you explain to people the situation the team is going through?
It’s hard. Our morale dropped after the match against Barcelona. We practically lost the title, which naturally makes your motivation change. I think these games are hard to play, but the team’s intention has always been to take three points, and it will be so again against Osasuna. It’s our last game and we want to win.
How much has all the talk about renewing the squad affected the players?
It’s a complicated situation, but I think we have to distance ourselves from everything that is being said and take things slowly. Whatever has to happen will happen. We simply have to play at our highest level and make good use of the playing time we each get.
How was Cannavaro’s farewell for the squad?
Fabio has given us a lot. He received an incredible and well-deserved ovation for the hard work he’s done since he arrived at Real Madrid. we are all a bit sad because we are losing a great team-mate. We wish him all the best. Nevertheless, there is still one game left and that should be the only thing in our minds. Once the season’s over we will give him the farewell he deserves for everything the’s done for the Club.
Which team would you rather won the Champions League final?
I want football to win, that is to say the team that truly deserves the victory.
Post-match comments
Real Madrid coach Juande Ramos discussed Sunday’s defeat againt Mallorca during the post-match press conference. With no more matches to play at the Santiago Bernabeu this season, Vicente Boluda discussed the future of Real Madrid. Like most of their teammates, Dani Parejo and Gonzalo Higuain were visibly upset Real Madrid were unable to win their final home match of the season.

Juande Ramos:
It’s hard to play when there is nothing at stake because you relax unknowingly. The team has allowed opponents to get the best of them in recent matches.
Not only has he been slowed by ankle problems, but Guti also had a family matter and was unable to train. That is why I didn’t put him on my squad list. Our relationship is great. I needed other players and that’s it. He asked for permission and I gave it to him.
We have a week to prepare for Osasuna. Wehave to see who we have injured and who we can recover. We must play our very best and not distort the competition in any manner. Real Madrid can at any moment find itself in a similar situation, which is why we must be professional. We must play with fire in our bellies. We know we’re not in the best shape mentally, but we obligated to play the best we can.
I am upset because we lost, but I haven’t said goodbye to anyone. It was Cannavaro who bid farewell.
When there is something on the line a team will always be tense and give its very best, but when there is nothing at stake its only normal that you take your foot off the gas. No one is at fault. It is all of us or none of us. The players are people, and when they don’t have to fight they won’t put forth their very best effort.
Vicente Boluda:
We would have liked to win, but I understand. The team finished second and no matter what happens, that’s the final standing. It’s very hard to play when not motivated, but what else can we do? The team did what it had to do until it didn’t have a chance. We won 18 straight matches; a spectacular record. With the points we ended up with we could have won many leagues. I stayed to do what has been done: unite Madridismo and install order. We peacefully held another Assembly and we called elections. Every team starts from scratch and next year Real Madrid will as well. I hope we win a title next year. I endorse the announcement the club delivered. As of today Real Madrid have not signed Cristiano Ronaldo. He has nothing to do with this club.
Parejo:
I am happy that I was able to play, but am sad that we couldn’t please the fans. They deserve it. It was a tough match for both teams. We started off well by scoring early, but that’s football for you. They scored three great goals and we couldn’t respond. We wanted to win for the fans and for us. Luck wasn’t on our sidea and now we need to begin preparing for the next match. Osasuna are in a tough predicament.
Higuain:
It’s hard to play when there is nothing to fight for. It’s complicated, but we have to think about the next match and try to win it. It was Cannavaro’s last match and he lives with his head held high. It’s a shame because we all love him and will miss him a lot. Thanks to the fans, who always stand by us. It hurts to finish like this after such a great second half of the season.
Real Madrid 1-3 Mallorca
Mallorca return home with a victory after defeating Real Madrid in their season closer at the Bernabey. Higuain put the Whites ahead, but goals by Arango, Cleber Santana and Keita put a damper on Fabio Cannavaro’s final match in the Spanish capital.

No major changes to the lineup on Sunday other than the return of Marcelo to left back. Real Madrid took early control and were the first to stage an attack. Higuain received a ball in the box, escaped from his defender and tried his luck on goal, but his shot deflected off Ramis and was subsequently cleared by Moya. It was the Argentine’s first warning shot. Seven minutes later he redirected a perfectly taken free-kick by Van der Vaart with his head to put the Whites in the driver’s seat. Higuain nearly scored his second two minutes later with a lob but the ball sailed just over the crossbar.
Mallorca then responded with a performance that easily explains their meteoric rise from the bottom of the table to a spot good enough to secure a berth in Spain’s top flight next season. Aduriz received the ball in the midfield, combined with Jurado, who turned it over to Arango for the equalizer on 25’. Eager to reclaim the spotlight, Higuain nearly gave Real the upper hand after a one-on-one with Moya. Raul also got in on the action with a late strike that struck the goalkeeper’s body.
Shortly after the second half kicked off, Fabio Cannavaro was replaced by Javi Garcia and Huntelaar by Dani Parejo. The ovation was deafening as Cannavaro thanked the fans with various gestures of gratitude. The Italian abandons Real Madrid with a World Cup title and Ballon d’Or under his belt.
Cleber Santana and Keita joined in on Cannavaro’s farewell party with spectacular shots that Casillas had no chance of saving, but they are already long forgotten as tonight was the night that Madridistas bid farewell to Cannavaro; a night the Bernabeu said goodbye to one of the best defenders to ever play the game. Ciao Fabio!
Madridista century club
Higuain’s 21 goals in La Liga this season make him the top-scorer at Real Madrid and place him among the top ten of Spain’s Primera Division. What’s more, they have accounted for 22 of Real’s points so far this year with one match to play. Equally impressive is the fact that Higuain is also the team’s top assist-man having provided nine passes that have resulted in goals. The Bernabeu has been the striker’s best ally. Seventeen of his 21 goals were scored on his home turf, where fans have been treated to game-winning goals against teams of the likes of Valencia, Racing, Malaga and Getafe.
Arrivederci Cannavaro
Fabio Cannavaro was choked up with emotion amid the applause from teammates and fans. It was a classy farewell for the Italian, who said goodbye to the Santiago Bernabeu after three seasons that included two league titles and one Spanish Super Cup.
“Grazie Mille” chanted the Bernabeu as a sad, but smiling number ’5′ abandoned the pitch. His honesty and humility thoughout his stint in Madrid earned the affection and respect of teammates, media and fans, who on Sunday gave Cannavaro the despedida he deserved. With a hand over his heart and tears in his eyes, the gentleman of football said “Arrivaderci” to Madrid one final time.

Marcelo bruised the sciatic nerve in his right leg and was forced to abandon the pitch in the second half of Sunday’s match against Mallorca.

Real Madrid vs Real Mallorca | Spanish Primera Liga | Round 37 | Preview
What a better way to close out the season at the Santiago Bernabeu than with a victory. Without the necessity of earning points, Real Madrid and Mallorca square off for an evening of good football and spectacular goals. Fabio Cannavaro bids farewell to Madridistas in his final home match after three seasons in the Spanish capital.

Real Madrid look to finish of the season in top form with a final home victory after a record of 14 wins, two draws and two defeats in the Bernabeu.
Without the services of Sneijder, Gago, Salgado, Metzelder, Heinze and Pepe, Juande Ramos has called on academy defender Javi Velayos. Mallorca meanwhile arrived in Madrid without Aouate, Nunes, Scaloni and Marti.
Mallorca have been one of Real Madrid’s all-time favorite prey. Of their 23 encounters at the Bernabeu, the Whites have managed 17 wins, three draws and three defeats. The islanders haven’t returned home with points in hand for the last four years and their last win in the Spanish capital dates back to 2003/04.
Several lineup changes are expected, the first being Dudek in goal instead of Casillas, who has played every minutes of every league match this year. Ramos and Cannavaro aim to start in the center of the back line flanked by Torres and Marcelo. Javi Garcia, Lass, Robben and Higuain should get the nod in the midfield with Raul and Huntelaar leading the charge in attack. Gregorio Manzano’s starting eleven is likely to include Moya in goal, Josemi, David Navarro, Ramis and Ayoze in defense, Varela, Mario Suarez, Cleber Santana and Arango in the midfield and Jurado and Aduriz in attack.
As announced last Thursday, Fabio Cannavaro will bid farewell to Real Madrid at season’s end after three years in Spain. The Italian will return to Juventus with two league titles and one Super Copa in tow.

The 18-man squad list also includes Real Madrid Castilla’s Javi Velayos, while Codina and Guti were left off due to a coaching decision.
Squad List:

Juande Ramos press conference
Juande Ramos didn’t comment on the forthcoming election or his future during Saturday’s press conference.

We have seen you spend more time alone this week. Is that just our perception or do you really feel that way?
It’s your perception. We are working just like every other day and trying to be in the best possible form for the match.
How do you feel when you read names of coaches in the press?
I can’t discuss what is published because I don’t know if it is true or not. I don’t know anything about the matter and therefore pay little attention.
Will you be more sensitive towards those who may be playing their last match at the Bernabeu?
Real Madrid players must defend their shirt until the very end. While the points now don’t have the value they used to, We must win the game, play as serious as possible and defend this shirt. The decisions I make will be made with winning the points in mind. Players who deserve to be recognized by the fans will be.
Do you feel like you arrived during a down time for Real Madrid?
Things are what they are and happen for a reason. The situation was normal when I arrived and then everything unraveled. We don’t like it, but we must accept it and do the best we can to get over it.
Do you think next season’s Real Madrid is putting the cart before the horse?
I am currently the coach of Real Madrid and all opinions are respectable. Everyone does what he feels is best for the club. I don’t know if it being worked on from within or not.
May tomorrow be your last match at the Bernabeu?
That would make sense since my contract expires on 30 June.
Would you have liked the fans to have enjoyed seeing better football?
Generally speaking we are satisfied with what the team has accomplished. Everyone would like to enjoy it more, but the results achieved are super taking into consideration the way the team worked.
Have you been contacted about next season?
I cannot confirm that because I don’t know. I told my agent that I am still on contract. I will evaluate offers at season’s end and see what interests me.
Do you deserve to continue?
That’s for the president to decide. If he believes so, he will have to make me an offer and I will then decide.
A lot of names have been discussed recently. How do the players feel?
We had a pleasant workout yesterday with lots of jokes and laughs. The players are also people and any news about them can affect them. Some take it harder than others.
How would players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Kaka and Villa fit into the team?
Real Madrid has always had world-class players. Every Real Madrid players knows he must live and work alongside other superstars, which is why they would be warmly received. Anyone that can contribute and help is welcome.
Onieva pulls out of presidency race!!
Source: Reuters
Juan Onieva has withdrawn from the running for the Real Madrid presidency after his presentation to set out his programme was not well received in the Spanish media.

Former vice president Onieva was quoted as saying in sports daily Marca on Saturday:
After thinking it over, I feel obliged to take responsibility for it and abandon the electoral race.
Florentino Perez and little-known Eduardo Garcia are the two remaining candidates who have said they will stand. They have until May 31 to lodge a bank guarantee of €57.4m with the club. If there is only one candidate, he will be appointed to the post on June 1. Otherwise the vote will take place on June 14.
I just have a feeling Perez has a hand to play in this.
An OFFICIAL ANNOUNCEMENT?!? Ridiculous!
The following is an official announcement made by the club on the homepage:
Real Madrid CF wishes to deny news that have appeared in several media regarding an alleged signing of Manchester United’s Cristiano Ronaldo. No pre-agreement exists between the Club and the player, his agent or Manchester United. As everyone knows, Real Madrid tried to sign the player last summer, but Manchester United firmly stated he would not be transferred.
Hahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahhahhahhahahahhahhahahahhahaha!!!
This is what the press can do to a football club.
Why are we even reacting to such stuff?!
Meanwhile presidential candidate Juan Onieva says it would be ‘madness’ to spend 100million euros on Cristiano Ronaldo. The former Real vice-president is aware of the proposed deal, but believes it would be ‘offensive’ to pay such a sum in the current economic climate. Onieva told Onda Cero:
I wouldn’t go through with it. If I had to take a decision I would contest the deal. I think it’s madness. I only know the terms in general. I haven’t seen the document. I think it is a little less than this (100m euros) because the deal was made in pounds. In terms of the figures, as far as I am aware, it is not right to pay that amount of money, especially in times like these. It’s almost offensive. Also, I don’t think he is the solution for Real Madrid.
Duhhh!
Para Siempre Blanco!!
Hala Madrid!!
Arjen Robben on Grada Blanca
Arjen Robben analysed the season and thanked the fans for their support in an interview to Grada Blanca.

There are only two games left in the league. Does the squad want it to end?
I think we do because everything’s been decided and we can’t win anything. We’ll have to prove we are a good team in these games and we will fight to win every title next season.
What’s your opinion on the season the team has had?
We’ve played very well since Juande Ramos arrived and we didn’t lose in 18 straight weeks, but we failed to perform in important games. In the end, all those matches we did so well in have amounted to nothing.
What about the season you’ve had?
The most important thing is that I’ve had less physical problems than in the past season. I’ve been injured less times; I’ve only sustained two or three injuries that lasted a short time. I think I’ve also played better than I did last year. I’m already thinking about the next campaign. I have a good feeling about it and I hope everything turns out well. I want to play much better for this club.
Has the best thing about Real Madrid this year been their faith in their chances to win the league and fighting for it to the end?
I think so. We’ve all worked hard in every training session and in every match, both at the Bernabeu and away from Madrid. We’ve been a united team and that’s very important.
Has the worst thing about the season been encountering such a strong Barcelona side?
That too. They’ve had an impressive season. It is sometimes hard to accept, but we must admit they’ve had an incredible campaign and that they are better than us right now. We will prove we can do as well as they have next year.
Your numbers in the second leg have been impressive. You won the league title last year with 85 points.
That’s true, but ending the season this way erases all good memories despite the good numbers we have. It would have truly been impressive if we had won our last three games. We can talk about how we stood undefeated for 18 weeks all we want, but people talk more about our last three encounters.
Did the defeat to Barcelona influence your performance against Valencia and Villarreal?
I think the match against Barça was the most important of the three. We had to be at a great level both individually and collectively, but we failed.
How are you preparing for the match against Mallorca?
It’s our last home game of the season and we must prove we are a good team.
It will be the squad’s farewell to the fans this year.
We must give a good performance for them. I hope it’s a nice game for the crowd because it’s always supported us. We must use all our weaponry to thank them for that.
You recently said you feel honoured to wear this shirt. Despite the rumours the massage seems clear: Arjen Robben wants to stay at Real Madrid for many years.
That’s true. I am very happy at this Club. I’ve improved during my stay here, but I also know I can do much better. I think I can become an important player next year if I sustain no injuries. That’s all I want.
Is it hard not to think of the coming season?
I think it’s normal. The season for us is over and our goal now is to play well in the remaining two games. We must be positive and accept that the season’s ended. We must perform in the next two games for the good of the Club’s image.
People say football always gives you the chance for a rematch. The team will probably be extra motivated next season.
We mustn’t forget that we won two league titles in the previous two years and we’ll try to win another next year. Our greatest goal will probably be to perform better in the Champions League.
Which would you prefer to win next year?
You can’t choose when you play for a club like Real Madrid. You have to win every game. We’ll try to win every title next year, but it will be hard to pull it off.
Codina press conference
Jordi Codina has fought to have a place on the first team ever since he joined the academy. The keeper said he always tries hard to do his best.

How have you experienced the season?
Just like i did last year. It is hard to be the third goalkeeper, but I’m always excited about coming to work every day and try do my best. We didn’t win the title, but we fought to the end. We made things difficult for Barcelona, but they eventually won the league.
Juande wants to give Casillas a rest in the next two games. Will you get a chhance to play?
I don’t know if Iker is going to rest or not, but I will be delighted if the coach counts on me. I will do my best if I get a chance to play and I will thank him for it.
Where would you rather play, at the Bernabeu or in Pamplona?
I would like to play at every stadium, but the coach decides that. He’ll have to decide whether to allow Iker to rest or not and decide which of us to use against Mallorca and Osasuna.
Both presidential candidates talk about boosting the youth system. Do you think they will if they win?
They are saying so for a reason. I don’t think they’re just saying it. The youth system counted in the previous election and the current squad has some academy players. The best footballers in the world are on this team and it’s hard to compete with that.
Who do you want to win on Wednesday, Barcelona or Manchester United?
I would like it to be us who played in the final… I want a Spanish team to win and I have many friends at Barcelona.
But if Cristiano Ronaldo eventually joins the team and wins next week he would arrive with a European title under his belt…
Yes, but it would be his, not ours. I don’t care about that because it wouldn’t be diisplayed on our shelves.
Anthony LaPaglia interview
Excited about his upcoming visit to the Bernabeu, Anthony LaPaglia talked to RealmadridTV about his years as a footballer and shared his views on the sport.

Anthony LaPaglia
Tell us about your earlier career in football.
Well, it lasted about ten minutes (laughs). I started playing when I was nine as a goalkeeper. I signed in the first professional league there was in Australia when I was 15 and started playing first team football at 16 or 17. And then, but the time I was 21, I was having too many problems with my head… Which is perfect for an actor!
Have you ever thought what would have happened if you had continued?
Many people have asked me what I prefer. I would actually exchange my entire career for one year in either La Liga or the Premier League. After the year is over I might regret that (laughs), but it would be fun.
What do you know of Real Madrid?
Real Madrid has been at the top of world football since I can remember, going back to Di Stefano and the great team of the 1950’s and mid 1960’s. To me it’s always been the symbol of glamour in football.
How does football compare to other sports in Australia?
When the first professional league started it was definitely a minor sport. Before the last World Cup, we only played in the one held in 1974. And that was in Germany too, so it seemed like it was just yesterday when we ended up there again. The interest in football in Australia has gone up dramatically since the last World Cup and the new professional league there is starting to do well. In the first year, which was the one after the World Cup, we were getting attendances of between 26,000 and 50,000. When LA Galaxy came to play in Sidney 80,000 people showed up. What happens is that kids play when they’re young, but when they have a look around to see where they could play at a professional level, they see very little. In order to become athletes they would take on another sport. That’s starting to change now. You can see it all over the world; there’s a good percentage of Australian footballers playing at an international level. They’re good enough.
So you continue to support the sport in America…
Yes. Once it’s in your blood it’s very hard to get it out. When I quit, the disappointment of not playing anymore made me stay away for about six years, but one day I walked into a football store and saw the boots, the gloves… I bought everything and I started playing again. It’s just recreational. What I love and miss about it is that it’s probably one of the most democratic sports in the world. It doesn’t matter what your level of education is, it doesn’t matter if you’re rich or poor… Once you cross the line everybody’s the same.
Which are your favorite Real Madrid players?
I told Casillas, “You are one of the two greatest goalkeepers in the world.” I believe he and Buffon are the best. He asked, “Which one?” And I said, “Today you’re number one” (laughs). I think he is. I thought Roberto Carlos was a great player; you don’t normally get a player that can play all along the field as a full back and score goals. I’m a big fan of Ruud van Nistelrooy. He has an amazing ability to score; some players just have the knack, a great sense of timing. It’s hard to choose because they’re so many…
Have you ever seen Real Madrid play live?
Not live, but I watch them all the time on TV. I’m going to the game on Sunday. I’ve never been to the Bernabeu. I can’t wait. There are certain stadiums, like the Bernabeu, San Siro, etc, that are iconic. When you walk into a stadium and see the green pitch it’s like Camelot. It’s magic. I plan to see as many of them as possible.
What do you think of Valdebebas?
The facilities are unbelievable. To have everything that you need as a professional athlete in one spot is amazing. You could live here if you want.
Cannavaro press conference
Smiling and charming as ever, but also sad for leaving Real Madrid, Fabio Cannavaro said goodbye to the media in his last press conference as a Madridista.

It’s time to say goodbye.
Yes. I’ve thought much about it and I’m going back to Italy to play for Juventus. I’ve made many friends in Madrid, people with whom I’ve had great relationships. I’m leaving Real Madrid. The important things is that I’ve given my all these last three years and that’s why I have no regrets about leaving.
Are you disappointed?
What I don’t like is that people will mostly remember our last three games. It shouldn’t be like that. Many strange things have happened this year that would have greatly affected any other team; there’s been a change of coach, a new President, Van Nistelrooy, Diarra and De la red have been injured all season, Pepe has been suspended… Before the game against Barcelona, all people saw was a phenomenal team that was having its best-ever run in the second leg of La Liga.
You’ll have a great chance to say goodbye to the fans on Sunday.
It’s important to win the game; both the team and the fans deserve it. It’s essential to have a good farewell at the Bernabeu so that we all have a nice feeling after the game. It will be special for me because it will be my last match at the Bernabeu.
Do you understand people being angry with you for signing for another team before the end of the season?
I’ve waited a long time. Juventus didn’t make it public until two days ago. I’ve waited for the Club to make a move, but it hasn’t, so I had to look out for my future. I didn’t have my medical with Juventus until after the Clasico, when it was already impossible for us to win the title.
What are your fondest memories of the last three years?
I have many because we’ve won two league titles and one Spanish Super Cup. I was very excited about winning the Champions League when I signed, but I’ve had a lot of fun despite failing to win the Club’s tenth European title. I’ve been to Cibeles twice and that makes me very happy.
Who will you miss the most?
Every team-mate. I’ve had a chance to play alongside the best: Iker, Diarra, Ruud, Sergio, Raul, Pepe… We fought together to the end. I will also miss the equipment managers, coaches and, of course, the press. You’ve always praised me when I’ve played well and thrashed me when I haven’t. This is natural in football and I’m relaxed about leaving.
Which are your saddest and happiest memories?
The saddest was the defeat against Barcelona at the Bernabeu this year. We worked hard before then and it was, as we say in Italy, “like going to Rome and not seeing the Pope.” The match in Liverpool was also a hard blow to all the squad. I think the happiest moments were having Barcelona receive us as victors last season, the Super Cup match against Valencia -which we won with just nine men-, the match against Mallorca that gave us our first league title… I have very fond memories of my three years at Real Madrid.
You arrived with the Ballon d’Or and the FIFA World Player awards in your pocket and you leave after a bad season.
No, no. This is typical in a footballer’s life. Some years are better than others, but what counts is being a professional. I’ve had an exemplary behaviour throughout these three years and I’ve behaved like a professional. Things can’t turn out well all the time.
What do Real Madrid need?
I think they need to take things slowly because many strange things have happened this year. The Club needs a clear path to follow as befits a great entity. It needs a President that lasts for more than four years; it’s the only way to make solid plans for the future.
Would you like to score a goal in your farewell at the Bernabeu?
I haven’t scored there in three years… Each player must know his place. It isn’t important to say goodbye with a goal because I don’t have to prove my worth in just one game. I must have done something well in three years.
Could Mourinho be a good coach for Real Madrid?
I think he is a great coach and Inter Milan have built a great team in recent years. We will have to work hard at Juventus to beat them because they are a great opponent. Mourinho has enough experience to coach a team like Real Madrid, but people are forgetting about Juande Ramos, who’s had a great season and is also a fantastic coach.
What would you like to say to the fans?
Grazie mille. The fans have always been great to me. They were very forgiving the first year and I can only thank them for it.
How would you like them to bid you farewell on Sunday?
Winning the game is what’s most important to me. The rest will come later. I shouldn’t think about having a good or a bad farewell; the team is what’s really important.
See you next year in the 2010 Champions League final.
I hope so. That would make me very happy.
Juan Onieva announces his candidacy
Former Real Madrid Vice-President Juan Onieva announced his candidacy to the Presidential Election with the slogan ‘What Real Madrid can do for you‘.

Juan Onieva said he decided to become a candidate because of “the current crisis Real Madrid is suffering, which is rooted in the abandonment of the basic principles that have determined the Club’s fate since the day it was founded. He said the main reasons for this problem are exacerbated mercantilism, abandonment of the youth system, and building a competitive team based on capital.
Onieva said it is essential to recover the values that made this institution great in the first place and pointed out that his candidacy’s programme is based on a very clear idea: ‘Team work’. In order for it to work, we must all be involved and actively participate. The three basic principles of his programme are:
- We are a sports entity and we don’t ever want to stop being one.
- Winning isn’t enough. It is important to win with style and good football.
- The Club Member is boss. He is the one who decides what’s going to happen in the next few years.
Onieva then stated the principle commitments of his programme, one of which is support for the youth system: Three Castilla players will be promoted to the first team every year; fifty percent of the squad should be elegible to play on the Spanish national team; every club team must have its own identity and style; as a social institution, Real Madrid must make an effort towards members who are having a difficult time; Club Members must constantly be aware of what’s happening at the Club and a Club Members Committee will be created to ensure this; Real Madrid must be leaders both on a sporting and institutional level; finallly, the committments applied to the football section must also be applied to the basketball section.
Miguel Torres press conference
Miguel Torres, like the rest of his team-mates, hopes the team ends the season with a victory at the Bernabeu against Mallorca.

You must be anxious to win before your fans on Sunday in what will be the last match at the Bernabeu this season.
It’s important to have a good end to the season at home in order to be excited at the start of the holidays and do better next year. I hope those of us who haven’t played as much get a chance to do so, and I also hope it turns out to be a good game in which we all have fun.
Today is Iker’s birthday. Have you congratulated him in any special way?
Besides being one of the captains, we are all very fond of him as a team-mate. It wasn’t anything special; we simply wished him a happy birthday and we hope he has a good day with his family.
Today is the eleventh anniversary of the Club’s 7th European Cup title. Do you feel nostalgia?
You feel nostalgia because you want to be at the very top too. The level at which Barcelona and Real Madrid play is always of the highest order, but both teams have been above or below each other depending on each season. Barcelona have been better this year and must be congratulated for their success. The beauty of football is that things can change all of a sudden. We must have the best possible end to the season, especially to make the fans happy with our work. We will change everything we did wrong this year in the coming season.
How did you experience the team’s seventh European Cup title?
I was at home and it was a wonderful moment. I went to see the reception people gave the players when they landed in Madrid. It was a diifferent feeling from the one I had in Cibeles last year. It’s nice to experience a celebration from two different points of view.
Mijatovic has announced his departure from the Cllub. Is this the dawn of a new era?
A time of election is at hand, with new people that have new ideas for the Club. I am grateful to Mijatovic because he was one of the people who wanted me on the first team. I made it thanks to him, Capello and Michel. They gave me a chance. I hope I do well in the future, wherever I may be.
Did he say goodbye to the squad?
I guess he’ll come over tomorrow. He’s always been close to the players. We all get along well with him. I am grateful to him for how he’s always behaved towards me and I wish him all the best for the future.
Do you think Madridismo will remember him for what he did as Sporting Director, as well as for the goal he scored in Amsterdam?
Real Madrid has many Club Members and they will all have a different opinion. Some people may like him and others may not. It is not my place to judge him. I can only be grateful to him for allowing me to reach the first team.
Journalists and fans alike believe you will stay on the team.
I am grateful for that. I want to play more and to continue having the support of the fans. I hope I stay next season and that we have a competitive team that all Madridismo likes. I wish to count for Real Madrid. If not, I won’t make any trouble. Academy players never do.
Pedja Mijatovic leaves the Club
Real Madrid’s Board of Directors and the Club’s Sporting Director, Pedja Mijatovic, have reached a mutual agreement for the termination of the latter’s contract, which was originally set to end in June 2010.

The Board wishes to express its most sincere gratitude for the work Pedja Mijatovic has done in the past three seasons, during which the Club won two league titles (2006/07 and 2007/08) and one Spanish Super Cup (2008). Real Madrid and its Board wish Mijatovic all the best in his future personal and professional endeavours.
Pedja Mijatovic statement
As per the annnouncement moments ago by the club, the Board of Directors and I reached a mutual agreement for the termination of my contract as Sporting Director of Real Madrid.
With the end of the season in sight, the team mathematically qualified to finish second and the electoral process officially under way, I believe this move was the most appropriate in order not to interfere in any way with the important events that will take place at the club in the next few weeks.
I will always be grateful to the current Board of Directors for the faith placed in me over the last three years.
Everything achieved over this time could not have been possible without the hard work, dedication and professionalism of all those that were members of this project, by which I would like to thank the fans, all the players from the first team down to the youngest academy teams, all the coaches and technical staff who I have had the honor of working with and each and every club employee and member of the press. Without them the objectives which we achieved would have been impossible.
I say goodbye with the feeling that I did my duty with positive results both professionally and personally. In these three years, the first team won two league titles and one Super Cup, but what makes me even more satisfied was the opportunity to take part in projects and hopes with such a fantastic group of people.
Real Madrid is a very important piece of who I am, and at this time in which I bring to a close my second cycle with this club, I would like to express my best wishes for the new path that Real Madrid is about to undertake. As the true Madridista that I am, I will continue supporting the team, enjoying the victories and celebrating titles that are won.
I cannot bid farewell without a heartfelt thank you to my wife and children, to whom I owe everything to. They are my life support and those that have had to suffer the sacrifices that go along with my job. Thank you to everyone.
¡¡Hala Madrid!!
