Juande Ramos press conference
Shortly after the last workout of the week, Juande Ramos analyzed the condition of the team heading into its match against Valladolid.

How are the recoveries of those injured coming along?
Marcelo will not play and everyone else is fit. Codina, Parejo and Marcelo are off the squad list for medical reasons.
Guti ought to be thanked for clarifying all the recent speculation.
I don’t have a problem with Guti. There has been a lot of spin on recent news, but as he said, we have a cordial relationship.
May Lass play as a right-back with Sergio Ramos out this weekend?
I still haven’t decided. I remember the job he did against Simao when we played against Atletico. I’ll have to take a look at the situation because each opponent is different.
There had been good vibes all week in relation to Barcelona until Pique came along and said what he said.
It has happened before but I pay no attention. I am responsible only for what I say, not the opinions of others. Freedom of expression is allowed.
Are you worried by the fact the Raul hasn’t scored in recent matches?
I look at the team as a whole and am very pleased with what I see. We have been playing well. I want the team to work just as it has been.
Is it frustrating to see your streak marred by the fact that Barcelona play so well?
No. Real Madrid’s streak has taken a back seat because Barcelona are doing so well. We must force Bacelona to win all their matches. We are two different teams with very different characteristics.
Do Barcelona have any defects or are they a perfect team?
There is no perfect team and Barcelona certainly isn’t one. They are very good in many areas, but they have defects like every team does. They are on the right track to win titles.
Your contract stipulates that you will continue as head coach if you win La Liga, but this week your name came up regardless of whether you win or not. How does that make you feel?
There will be elections soon and rumors will be constant, so we must get used to them. We must continue working hard to be able to make a proper assessment at season’s end and when there is a new president.
The players must also be restless…
They are professionals and are used to rumors. I don’t think it will affect their work.
Metzelder to Grada Blanca
Now in his second season with Real Madrid, Christoph Metzelder has fully adapted to the team and the league. The defender has proven to be in fine form in recent matches and only one thing crosses his mind, “winning La Liga.”

Quite a streak the team has put together…
It is pretty impressive. We are the only team who hasn’t lost in 2009. We’ll try to maintain it until the end because we know that victories are all that count to win La Liga.
It is believed that leagues are won and lost in the final ten matches. As of now, the first battle was won in Malaga.
I completely agree. Teams have a lot on the line at this point, such as spots in European competitions and the chance to avoid relegation. They will be difficult matches, but we are well-prepared. We are completely focused on the league and have nothing to distract us. We are training well for the final push and want to be well-prepared for the matches we have left.
The team hasn’t lost since December. What has been the key to the streak?
We all knew from day one that this was a talented team. We didn’t show it much in the first half of the season. The tactical aspect of our game has improved since Juande Ramos got here, and it has shown on the pitch and in away matches. We were able to win in Malaga and Bilbao for example. I think the team is doing well and that we can win the remaining matches.
The team was able to react and get back into the thick of things after trailing Barcelona by twelve points.
True. La Liga is very much alive. We wanted to show that this team has talent and a good attitude. We were able to claw back after falling behind by twelve points, and now we want to prove that we have the spirit that has always defined Real Madrid when it comes to winning.
With nine matches to play and a six-point deficit, does the team really believe it can win its third straight league title?
The majority of the players here are internationals. We know how the world of football works and understand how complicated it can be. Six points against a team like Barcelona can be difficult to turn around, especially when we have tough road matches ahead. But with this run we have put together, we feel we can catch Barcelona.
Which means there can be no setbacks whatsoever…
We must keep up the pressure and continue to push. They should feel the heat because they still have the Champions League to play and may slip up. We hope they do one day, at which point we will be right there to capitalize.
The next final is at the Bernabeu against Valladolid, a team who made it quite hard on you in the first leg of the tie.
Valladolid are an uncomfortable team to play, especially on their turf. Opponents have a hard time at the Bernabeu, which is why we must be strong from the star. Scoring quickly will make it much easier for us. We must take advantage of the first few minutes when there is a lot more pressure.
Does the team want Barcelona to continue having success in the Champions League so that they play more matches or would you prefer that they be eliminated and suffer emotionally?
I think we will benefit if Barcelona maintain such a high rhythm. There is more physical and emotional demand that way. It would be better for us if they continue in the Champions League.
Do you prefer taking the pitch for matches knowing already knowing what Barcelona have done?
Our situation is relatively easy. We know that to win this league, which won’t be easy, we must win ever match. There are no tactics involved and we cannot let our guard down. We must win. We do not need to know what Barcelona do.
Personally speaking, how do you feel?
As a center-back, it is very important to play on a regular basis in order to be better prepared in aspects such as anticipation. I have been improving in recent matches and I hope to continue playing in upcoming weeks.
It must be hard to find such a rhythm when a player must deal with so many injuries.
I was unlucky with last year’s injury and operation. I have had some small problems this season, but I think I am in good form. I feel it in matches when I play, which is why I hope I am given an opportunity to play in the matches we have left.
What is your goal heading down the home stretch of the season?
I want to show fans exactly what I have to offer, which is why Real Madrid signed me in the first place. I want to prove that I have what it takes to play for Real Madrid, which is why I want to play as much as possible.
Heinze press conference
Defender Gabriel Heinze said the squad believes it can win the league title at the end of the campaign.

The team’s been having an excellent run, but does it still believe it can win the title seeing how well Barcelona are playing?
Sure. We must believe we can win as long as there is a mathematical chance to do so. We don’t depend on ourselves, but we do believe.
Are you envious of Barcelona’s excellent form?
I really don’t like that word. I don’t feel envy, but I am a bit stirred because I represent a great club and I would naturally like to be in their situation.
The next game will be special for you. The goal is to cut the distance short…
The game will be special for me, but I play for a different team now and I hope we take the three points. Fondness will have to be pushed aside. I was treated very well at Valladolid and I will always be grateful to the club and the city for that.
You are earning record-breaking numbers with Juande, but you are still six points behind the leaders. Is that frustrating?
It isn’t because we do what is asked of us: win. We don’t depend on ourselves and we will have to congratulate Barça at the end of the season if they fail to drop any points. We have to win, win and win, and wait for them to drop points. That’s the only thing left for us to do until the season ends.
Will the Real Madrid-Barcelona clash be crucial to see who will win the title?
You can’t afford to think about Barcelona if you haven’t won your previous games; the points we may take against them will mean little if we fail to win before. We must win all our games in order for the Clasico to be a decisive clash.
The squad is confident and really wants to win…
Yes, it does. The atmosphere is always best when you win. I’ve only had positive experiences here. There’s always painful downslides, but winning allows for confidence and a good atmosphere.
Some say being in three competitions is very tiring, but others say it motivates a team even more. What do you think?
I think the more competitions you are in, the better because exhaustion is much more bearable. You avoid exhaustion by eating well and resting more. One always likes to play those games. We now play in the weekends, but having games in mid-week means you are alive. That’s beautiful for a team like Real Madrid.
The coming election gives way to rumours. A newspaper’s front page says today that Robben may leave. Can things like this hurt the squad?
I never read front pages and I think the only one that can be hurt by something like that is the player, not the whole squad. We are all grown ups here and take no notice of that. We know these things are common on teams like this one. We would support him if he felt bad about it. I don’t actually know how true these allegations are. I don’t believe what the papers say until they tell it to my face.
Exactly how significant was Guti’s intention to silence doubts about his relationship with the coach?
I think it’s good for people to express themselves as Guti did. The problems he had with the coach have been resolved, which is good because he is a very important player. I never saw anything wrong going on. He must have had his resons for speaking the other day.
Has the squad talked about last years’ 7-0 victory over Valladolid?
No. This game is different. Thinking about how well you did one year ago can play against you.
Coach Mendilibar has said he wants his team to attack. He doesn’t mid facing Real Madrid.
He is very capable and coaches his team as he sees fit. What he said shows he has faith in his men.
You were suspended last week.
I’m anxious to play. I’m available for whatever the coach may need.
Toure Yaya said Barcelona are the best team in Europe. Do you regard that as a lack of modesty?
It doesn’t have to be that if he truly believes so. It’s obvious they are having their best streak of the year.
Which is the best European team in your opinion?
I couldn’t say. I would really have to think about it.
How much credit does Guardiola deserve for Barcelona’s great run?
I personally like him very much. I respect him because I know what he’s values are. I like how he handles the squad. I’m always glad when people like him succeed; the only problem is that he coaches our great rival. I like to hear him talk because I learn a lot from him.
If you were President, would you like to sign him as Real Madrid’s coach?
I’m a player still and I like to listen to him because there is meaning behind everything he says.
Have you managed to forget about your defeat against Bolivia?
I will never forget it. I’d like to believe it was just an accident because I’ve thought about it much and still can find no answer. It’s easy to blame the altitude, but Argentina should never lose like that. It’s better to move on and learn from our mistakes.
Was the altitude really that noticeable?
Everyone would notice it immediately. It’s not really that you lack the air to breathe; you feel different, that’s all.
Dani Parejo to Realmadrid.com
Dani Parejo is a true Madridista. Bred in the youth system, the midfielder was loaned out to Queens Park Rangers at the start of the campaign, only to be brought back to join the first team in the winter. Parejo firmly believes the team can win the league title.

What do you think of your first few months on the first team?
I feel fit and I’m anxious to help the team out any way I can. I want to learn in order to improve as a player.
How was your experience in England like?
It was very nice. It helped me mature both as a player and as a person. It was hard for me to leave Real Madrid for the first time, but I think I made the right decision.
Was your adaptation to English football difficult?
My parents moved with me and that helped. I was treated very well at the club from the very first day.
Are both leagues very different?
They play a different game there. It’s very aggressive and long passes and aerial game rule throughout. That experience will help me adapt easily to any other style of football.
Your dream came true when you were brought back to join the first team in the winter…
I think it’s the dream of every kid who likes football. I hope to stay for many years. I’ve reached the sky.
How real are your chances to win the league title?
We firmly believe we can win. Anything’s possible if this streak continues. It happened two years ago and it could very well happen again. I hope it does.
How did you feel when you made your debut against Sporting?
It was my dream. I worked hard to make it and I feel something special when I stepped onto the pitch at El Molinon. I will never forget that game.
Do you follow Real Madrid Castilla?
Very often. I go to the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium whenever I can to see the progress my old team-mates are making.
Do you believe they can get promoted to the Second Division?
I really do. They are having a splendid season.
Which have been the best and worst moments in your career?
The best was winning the Under-19 Euro. Injuries have always been the worst moments. I once had a three month-long injury on one of my arms.
You once said you would have also liked to be a journalist…
I love football, so I would have also liked to be a sport journalist. It would have been a great alternative career and I haven’t completely forgotten about it.
What do you dream of?
I dream of winning La Liga and helping my team-mates as much as I can.
Marcelo press conference
Marcelo has been niggled since he returned from playing with Brazil, but he says he may be ready to help the team defeat Valladolid this weekend.

How do you feel from your injury?
I feel fine. I trained today. It felt good to work-out with a ball.
How does the squad feel about the victorious streak it’s having?
We are doing a very good job. We also managed to win the game following the league stoppage. We will try to defeat Valladolid because every point is important.
Do you think Barcelona may start feeling tired for playing in three competitions?
Of course. They have to have a downslide some time. We must remain calm, play our game and take more points. If we keep winning, all we’ll have to do is wait for Barcelona to lose in order to catch up with them.
What did you think of their 4-0 victory last night?
I wasn’t able to watch the game, but I knew about the score. It’s good for them to score four goals.
Do you think the match against them at the Bernabeu will be key to win La Liga?
I’m sure it will be an important game, but we can’t think about it yet. We have to face other teams first and we’ll have to defeat all of them.
Are you ready to return to the starting line-up?
I don’t know. I trained aside from the squad today, but I think I’ll be fine tomorrow and that I’ll be able to train with the rest. I’m sure I’ll be able to play this weekend if that happens.
Guti press conference
Much has been said about Guti these days, but the Madridista decided to clarify everything. The midfielder said he is happy at Real Madrid and that he is 100% devoted to the team’s fight to win the title.

Marcelo was meant to give the press conference, but it’s been you instead. You must have something to say…
People have been talking about me for three days. It looks like I’ve killed someone! All of us -myself, my family, my team-mates and the coach- feel rather bad because people are making a big deal out of something that isn’t important to us. I think what happened on the bench on Saturday is not even an issue because I had been warming up from the very first minute. The coach decided there should be rotations every ten minutes. The fitness coach asked me if I was ready and I said I was. People are speculating about something that makes no sense because I had been warming up from the start.
Is your relationship with Juande a poor one?
I’ll tell you how I feel. We have a cordial relationship, but he is using other players. This is part of the game. People are speculating about me leaving the team, that if I do it may be through the back door… It’s too much. It all stems from the fact that I didn’t make one squad list and from what people think happened on the bench on Saturday. The only thing that happened was that I told the fitness trainer I was ready to play. Some people are talking about my personal life when they know nothing about it. I would like those who write such tough and critical articles with disregard to my professional career to do the opposite and have a look at how they and their families actually are.
Have you been punished or is your behaviour actually spotless?
My behaviour has always been spotless, like that of the rest of the squad. The coach decides who plays.
Less experienced players than yourself played on Saturday. How did that make you feel?
Some players want to play more than others. A footballer is always selfish and wants to play all the time. It happens to me and to everyone else.
But you also had a brush with Juande when he replaced you in the derby with Atletico…
We talked about it and that’s all. We talk on a daily basis. When one of us makes a mistake he makes up for it. Juande doesn’t use me because he has faith in other players and things are working out. I can’t tolerate everything the papers and the television are saying; they talk about stuff that has nothing to do with my profession and about what the team needs, which is to win La Liga.
Do you think you are an easy target?
No one has punished me. I’ve been 14 years on this team and there have been times in which I’ve played more and times in which I’ve played less. But very few players stay so long in this team. It’s true that I’ve had some clashes due to my character, but they’ve always been instantly resolved. I’ve never had a problem.
Why do you think your professionalism comes into question?
It’s been happening for a while. I never pretend. I like playing and being a member of Real Madrid. I don’t think anyone ever thinks that way. It’s absurd. I’ve heard a lot for a long time now and it hurts, but my conscience is clear.
A lot has been said, and much of it hasn’t been good, but you have never complained about a thing.
I have always been the same and have never changed. I have never intended to offend anybody. That is who I am and if someone doesn’t like it, I am sorry.
Alter all that has taken place, have you taken the time to think everything through?
I regret having gotten angry and we have discussed it. What really surprises me is what took place on the bench. It’s not very typical in football for a player on the bench to be under the microscope for 90 minutes. It’s more common on talk shows than in sports. I am sure things are misinterpreted if there is a channel that is focusing on one player during an entire match.
Do you have anything to say to fans who have heard that you might abandon Real Madrid?
I am very happy to be here and only want to leave in 2011 with more titles in hand. My only intention is to work hard and convince the coach that I deserve more playing time.
Why do you think Juande isn’t playing you more often?
I have had some long-lasting injuries. It’s taken me a while to get back and the squad is clicking right now. It’s completely normal. Don’t change what isn’t broken. I have to wait for my chance and do the best I can when I get it.
Do you think Real Madrid can win all nine matches that remain?
We have to if we want to win the league because Barcelona aren’t likely to slip up much. We will have a chance if we can shave off some points before the Clasico.
Miguel Torres to Realmadrid Radio
Miguel Torres knows its hard to make a starting lineup at Real Madrid. The youth teamer had a chance to play on Saturday and performed brilliantly against Malaga.

You played very well against Malaga.
Thank you, but I can still do much more. It was difficult for me because it had been a long time since I had played 90 minutes and that can lead to a bad performance. You always have to try your best and stay focused.
Malaga were a complicated opponent.
Yes, they were, and many of our players were tired or injured after the league stoppage. People like me, who hadn’t played for a long time, had to step up. I think the team responded well. We can’t afford to stop putting pressure on Barcelona, who haven’t dropped a single point yet.
It must be very important to have a large and solid squad.
I think those of us who play less have united. We train hard the days following a game, during which the starters usually rest. We make it hard for the coach to make up his mind.
Is the youth system important for the first team?
There are several former youth players on the first team that have been at the Club for many years and that are great players at a national level, but it is also important to note that there are also many men from the academy that have become successful on other teams. I met Jurado and Mata –who has already played with the first national team-, when I was called-up by the Under-21 national side. These things motivate us to do even better.
Was the match on Saturday one of the most complicated ones due to everything that surrounded it?
I think people talk too much about the forthcoming Clasico at the Bernabeu. I believe the match in Malaga was even more complicated because only three other teams had managed to win there before us this season and Malaga had more time to prepare for the clash than we did. We did our best despite how tired we felt. This week will be more relaxed to prepare for the match against Valladolid. We hope to win and wish those playing in the Champions League start feeling tired.
Heinze will face Valladolid, but Ramos is suspended for the game. You could be a starter again…
I hope so. I don’t care about the position as long as I play and the coach knows that. He has usually preferred Michel Salgado when he needs a right back. I must continue to work as hard as I’ve been doing so far and do my best whenever I get another chance.
You reached the first team two years ago when the team was in a similar situation as the one it currently lives. Is it really that similar?
It is. Raul has told us that we may win the title in the end if we are smart, stay together and work along the same lines. It was a great moment for me to reach the first team. We were all united and we were excited about our chances to win the title.
You’ve played for every single academy team at the Club.
That doesn’t mean I am the best. I think I’ve always been a good team worker and that I’ve been lucky to get here. I’ve also had many team-mates that could have been successful but weren’t in the end. I was, and one must make good use of these chances.
The team is so focused on catching up with Barcelona that none of you realises the amazing numbers you are getting.
I hardly know about them because we are all focused on the games. They are nice, but we should disregard them because the same figures would have made us leaders in previous years.
Is the squad determined to win the title?
We are, especially because Raul and Iker remind us we may win if we are smart and fight hard. Some of the players don’t really know what Madridismo is because they aren’t from Madrid, so it’s good that Raul and Iker take time to teach all of us what it means.
As a pure Madridista, do you also try to teach newcomers about Madridismo?
I try to when they ask, but those words have more impact coming from someone like Raul or Iker. That’s why I think it’s good that they keep an eye on all of us, newcomers and youth teamers.
Has your life changed much since you got promoted to the first team?
Yes it has, but I take it easy. My family and friends all live in Madrid and I keep the same circle as I did before. I have to limit myself at times because you represent the Club all the time, even after training. Luckily, those I love are near and help me stay focused.
Huntelaar press conference
Huntelaar only thinks about winning. The Dutch striker is having a great run and will be a key figure in Real Madrid’s remaining nine games in La Liga.

You were sitting on the bench when the whole incident with Guti in Malaga happened. What did you see?
I only saw that everyone was warming up. I was getting dressed and watching the game. That’s all.
How do you think Guti is doing?
We are all united and we fight together to win the league title. I think he’s doing as well as the rest of the team.
Is the team especially happy with the victory because it hardly had time to prepare for the game?
It was a very important victory, especially because we sustained many injuries. Barcelona also won and still hold the same lead, but we will continue to fight.
Men that don’t usually get a chance to play did rather well. Does that mean Real Madrid have a squad strong enough for the next nine games?
We want to win more than anything else. We all do our best to catch up with the leaders and win the title.
Barcelona will face Bayern Munich in the Champions League. As a Madridista, what would you prefer happened?
I’m not too worried about it, but it’s important for us that they start giving out signs of exhaustion. We should take advantage of that.
Do you think you can be compatible with Van Nistelrooy in the future?
That’s up to the coach. I just think about this season and our next game. Whatever has to happen will happen.
Do you feel like you are ahead of him thanks to your excellent run and the fact that he’s injured?
I’m only thinking about the current season. Whatever happens will depend on many different things.
Do you still think the team can win all its games?
Of course I do. Our next game will be at the Bernabeu. We will have to take each game at a time and wait for Barcelona to drop points.
The election campaign hasn’t started yet, but there are rumours about future signings. How does that affect the squad?
I personally feel no pressure. I focus on the next game and I think everyone else does too.
Ronaldo always used to make a bet saying how many goals he was going to score during the season. Do you dare say a number?
I would like to score many goals. What’s important is that the team continues to win its games. I can’t really say how many goals I’ll score.
Do you think Juande deserves to stay at Real Madrid?
We’ve been doing a good job since December. I think Juande Ramos is a very good coach that positions each player where he can do his best.
Which do you like most of the things fans have been saying about you?
I still don’t understand it all because they use words you don’t learn in Spanish lessons. What I’ve most enjoyed is the attitude they have with me.

Post-match comments
Juande Ramos believes his team deserved to win because it played better than Malaga in the second half. Both Higuain and Parejo were satisfied with the team’s victory over Malaga. Torres, Pepe and Gago were happy with the victory in Malaga and said the team will not give up the fight for the league title.

Juande Ramos:
We knew this was a difficult venue because Malaga are having a magnificent season. Many of our men had played two consecutive games with their national teams and had little rest, and we also sustained several injuries. Those players who normally have fewer chances to shine played extremely well, but that didn’t surprise me. I expected them to react this way. We dominated in the second half and I think we deserved to win.
Cannavaro played two 90-minute games in just a few days and I thought he needed rest given his age. Matzelder was fresh and I thought this would be a good game for him.
We weren’t worried about Barcelona’s victory. We can only catch up with them if we win all our games and if they drop points. We can’t obsess about Barcelona because they are playing at a high level and winning regularly.
It’s been nice for me to come back to this stadium. I’ve seen many of the friends I made during my stay here. The stadium looks beautiful and it should be packed for every game.
Higuain:
I’ve got nothing against Malaga, I simply try to score all the time regardless of the opponent. I had many chances and the goal I scored luckily gave us the victory. The entire team worked to win. I’m always ready to help and try to do my best. This victory is important because it allows us to keep our distance with Barcelona. We missed many players, but we are all equally important and we all do well on the pitch. I’m happy because the team tried hard to win. Juande said we are all important and he’s right. I gradually score more goals away from home; I hope this streak continues.
Parejo:
This was a complicated game in a difficult venue. These three points are very important in the fight for the league title. Many of our internationals missed the clash and Malaga are a difficult opponent, so this means more than just three more points. It was essential to pull through. Morale is high on the squad. There are many Madridistas in Malaga and we felt their support.
Malaga proved to be a great team in the first half. We scored a quick goal at the start of the second half and the game opened up. We haven’t lost a single league game in 2009 and we must keep this up. We must now focus on our game with Valladolid. There are nine weeks left and we must cut our six-point difference short. Everything’s possible.
Miguel Torres:
It was important to be calm after the league stoppage. I think we played well and we are happy with the result. After the game, we talked about the fact that we deserve another league title.
We must now focus on our work and keep an eye on Barcelona’s games because they will now play on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Malaga played very well, probably because they had more time to prepare for the clash than us. Juande made some interesting changes by bringing Parejo and Garcia on; it was an important gesture towards the youth system.
Pepe:
This is an important triumph following a league stoppage. This team has proven it can overcome all adversity and that it will fight to win the league title to the end.
Malaga complicated things for us, but we won thanks to our efforts.
Gago:
We did a good job and deserved to win. The team played well and fought hard until the ref blew the final whistle.
There are nine finals left and we will try to win them all.
Malaga 0-1 Real Madrid
You can’t ask for more. Winning is all that matters and that’s just what Real Madrid did tonight at La Rosaleda despite the absences of regular starters like Robben, Marcelo, Cannavaro, Heinze and Lass, and a starting 11 with many internationals that had played two games in the previous five days. The Madridistas haven’t lost a league game in 14 weeks.

Metzelder was paired with Pepe in the middle of defence, with Torres and Ramos down the flanks. Gago, Sneijder and Van der Vaart covered the midfield, while Raul, Higuin and Huntelaar formed the attacking front. Baha and Adrian Lopez returned to action for Malaga.
The locals pressurised from the start and kept the ball from Real Madrid, who hardly had any clear chances on goal in the entire first half. The first of these came through Torres, whose cross into the box was sent out by Higuain (8′). Van der Vaart came close to scoring a minute later with a shot down the right wing, but as time went by the locals began to dominate. Duda and Eliseo opened up Malaga’s game and swapped positions to great effect.
Adrian tried to surprise Casillas on the 20-minute mark, but the keeper managed to grab the ball. Following a poor clearance from Real Madrid’s defence a couple of minutes later, Gaspar had a shot on target, but Casillas cleared it with his fists. Malaga kept possession and gradually reached the Whites’ goal more often. The Madridistas had a couple of chances through Higuain and Sneijder, whose shots from a distance were both off target (33′ and 35′). Casillas had to pull rank once again right before half-time, saving a free-kick taken by Duda on the far left corner of the box.
Real Madrid were a different team in the last 45 minutes. Malaga lost concentration in midfield, where Higuain stole the ball, dribbled past Wellington, and ran towards the goal only to score the team’s only strike with a beautiful crossed shot. It was his 16th goal this season and his fifth against Malaga. The locals responded with a tough shot by Adrian aimed at the top right corner of Casillas’ goal (51′) and by bringing Luque on for Eliseu (55’). Malaga had to try harder in attack, giving Madrid more room to play in.
The locals kept trying for an equaliser and Gaspar soon tested Casillas again in a one-on-one, but the keeper’s reflexes again saved the day (63′). Juande Ramos then decided to focus more on defence and brought Garcia on for Huntelaar (65′), while Salva replaced Baha for Malaga. Goalkeeper Goitia was put to the test several times in the final minutes and sent Ramos’ and Higuain’s shots to corner-kicks (73′ and 76′). In the end, Real Madrid took three more points that keep them alive in the fight for the league title.
La Rosaleda remembered Juanito
Those who knew him and saw him play say Juanito knew no middle ground as a winger. Some loved him and others didn’t, but he played for Real Madrid ten years and spent his last two seasons as a professional player at Malaga. La Rosaleda remembered Juanito during the Malaga-Real Madrid fixture, two days after the 17th anniversary of his death.
Juanito left Real Madrid in 1987 and signed for Malaga -where he was regarded as a national hero- one season later. He felt strange playing at the Bernabeu as a visitor, but he nevertheless defeated Buyo with an amazing 25-metre lob shot in 1989. Juanito scored his last goal before retiring against Zaragoza on 27 June 1989. He played 71 games as a Madridista, scoring 15 goals. He also won over the heart of Malaga supporters.
Juanito died in a tragic car accident on 2 April 1992 returning to Merida -where he coached- after seeing the UEFA Cup fixture between Real Madrid and Torino at the Bernabeu. Since then, Real Madrid fans chant his name on the 7th minute of every game, singing “¡Illa, illa, illa, Juanito maravilla!” Malaga fans wanted to pay tribute to him tonight and sang this chant on the 7-minute mark at La Rosaleda.
Lineups:
Málaga: Goitia, Manolo Gaspar, Jesús Gámez, Weligton, Calleja, Apoño, Lolo, Duda (Nacho 82′), Adrián, Eliseu (Albert Luque 56′), Baha (Salva 67′);
Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Metzelder, Torres, Gago, Sneijder (Parejo 87′), Van der Vaart (Drenthe 90′), Higuaín, Raúl, Huntelaar (Javi García 67′);
Malaga vs Real Madrid | Spanish Primera Liga | Round 29 | Preview
Real Madrid and Malaga need a victory tonight to take a firm step towards achieving their goals for the season. The Whites still dream about winning the league title, while the southern side wishes to reach the European qualifying positions on the table. The spirit of Juanito -the 17th anniversary of his death was two days ago- will surely be on the stands watching his two dear teams fighting in an exciting clash.

The FIFA virus has taken its toll on Real Madrid. Juande Ramos only had one day to train with all of his players -except Gago, whose flight was delayed- and he won’t be able to count on two of his most reliable men: Robben and Marcelo, both injured. Lass Diarra made the squad list, but suffers from a niggle, and Heinze is suspended for the game.
These absences will give others the chance to shine. Guti missed the clash against Almeria and may be a starter in midfield. Van der Vaart has chances of playing down the left wing and Miguel Torres could well take Heinze’s spot as left back. Nothing will change in attack, with Raul, Higuain and Huntelaar as strikers. Barcelona’s fixture in Valladolid will end before the match in Malaga, meaning the Madridistas will know how their eternal foe has fared. Nevertheless, nothing can add more pressure to wanting to win a league title.
Malaga are the most surprising team of the season. They are 8th with 43 points and only the goal-average keeps them away from making it to the UEFA Cup next year. They started the season hoping to remain in the First Division next year, but the dream of playing in a European competition soon grabbed hold of them.
Coach Antonio Tapia has recovered defenders Javier Calleja and Weligton, striker Nabil Baha and midfielder Miguel Angel. Portuguese midfielder Duda is expected to play now that he has recovered from his niggles, but the final suqad list won’t be announced until a few hours before the game kicks-off.

The Tale of the Two Fools starring Maicon and Mario Rosi
Once upon a time in Italy there lived two fools named Maicon and Mario Rosi. Maicon was considered to be the Brawn and Mario his Brain. Maicon was basically useless and was not capable of doing anything productive but then the world was going through such a torrid time that people got bamboozled by his stupid tricks and readily accepted his claims of being the best in the world at whatever he was doing.
![]()
Mario the Brain quickly realized that this wasn’t going to last for long and he wanted to use the good time he accomplice was having and decided to propagate his fame through a bunch of lousy press boys all around the world. As per his calculations it did work. People started believing his words – the world was in such a poor state. But things were changing in Italy. The spell he had cast on the people there was wearing out. His true self was becoming clearer by the minute and so Mario decided to move quick and fast. He asked Maicon to call up his assistant Antonio Caliendo and make him say something as stupid as this to the press:
Yes, there is interest from Real Madrid. But it is not only los Blancos, because Maicon is the number one in his position.
Caliendo apart from claiming Madrid were interested in his employer, said that making statements regarding interest from other clubs has nothing to do with a desire for an improved contract with the Nerrazzurri. How smart is he?!
Real Madrid soon got abso-fuckin-lutely pissed with whatever those ass clowns were doing. They released the following statement on their website:
Real Madrid denies the report published on page 14 of AS newspaper in its 2 April 2009 edition claiming that “Real Madrid has made an offer for Maicon,” as well as the statement made by the player’s personal advisor, Mario Rosi, who claims “Madrid has sent a fax to Inter.” Neither President Vicente Boluda nor his Board of Directors wishes to initiate or maintain talks regarding the possible hiring of players during the duration of their term.
And then they were busted and everyone else lived happily ever after.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Juande press conference
Juande Ramos talked about the shape the international players have returned in and tomorrow’s match against Malaga.

Real Madrid have suffered from the international games this time…
That’s right. It’s been a tough day because most of our internationals have returned with problems. We will have to find a solution and look on the bright side. Those who usually get less chances to play will be able to help out. I have faith in them.
Couldn’t clubs protect themselves against situations like these?
That would be convenient and advisable, but it’s hard. Some players stay in Europe and travel a short distance, but others travel much further. We still miss our South American players, which means they won’t be able to play. I hope someone finds a solution to this, but we have to accept it for now. These stoppages have a greater effect on teams with many international players.
Will you count on Robben for the match?
We have doubts about some players for several reasons and we will include some new faces on the squad list. We have to talk to the dotors in order to see what we can do.
How’s the situation with Guti coming along?
There’s no problem with Guti. He is just another player on the squad that we use when we deem necessary. Leaving him out one day isn’t a big deal. We use him when we believe his efforts may help the entire team.
The team always seems to win right after a stoppage…
I hope that streak continues. Every game is different and Real Madrid must only think about winning every game in order to cut distances short with Barcelona, and hope the latter make mistakes. Only by winning our games will we be able to catch up with them.
Leo Messi returned to Barcelona in a private jet. Do you think sharing costs is a valid option to bring players back sooner?
Entities should discuss sharing costs of flying a plane, but the routes we need to cover are different.
Why don’t you ever announce your squad list before a press conference?
I consider every player on this team to be equally important. It doesn’t really matter who makes the list. They are all Real Madrid footballers. They all have similar quality and different individual characteristics.
Does it hurt to know that something could have been done to bring Gago back sooner?
Flying to Barcelona isn’t the same as flying to Madrid. The Club has people handling flights for the players. What hurts is not having all my men fit for a game. Even if he had arrived on time, all that Gago would have been able to do after such a long trip is jog in a recovery session, do some stretching exercises and had some massages. He wouldn’t have been able to train hard after such a long flight.
Don’t you think some players use these trips to take some extra time off?
I believe we have an excellent group of professionals that try to do what’s best for them and for their Club. Most of them arrive the same day and they are all nice boys that want to be available for their Club as soon as possible.
Have you seen a change in Guti’s attitude that satisfies you?
Guti is a disciplined player that works as hard as any other. I am delighted with him. There’s nothing wrong. This controversy arose when he didn’t make one squad list, but he is just another player on the squad that we use to help the team as a whole.
Do you understand Guti not seeing it that way?
I think he is an intelligent player that has been a long time at Real Madrid. This is a great club that has many players of different characeteristics. You choose the players that best suit your interests depending on the situation.
People used to say your style was boring, but many now want you to stay on…
As I always say, everyone is entitled to an opinion. We have to do our best to the end. Those who will end up running the Club must decide what to do. We shouldn’t side with any of the candidacies. I work for Real Madrid and I will try to do my best until my last day.
Lass is one of the pillars of this team. How serious are his injuries?
We are worried because we have another injured player, but the fact that we have enough men to make a starting lineup puts our minds at ease. I will be very happy if Lass is able to play because he is doing a great job, but someone else could take his spot and do equally well. I’m not too worried because we have a 25-man squad and some now have the chance to prove they are as good as those who play regularly.
Do you think the election campaign could be bad for you?
The Club has gone through several delicate moments on an instututional level, but we on the sporting side of things pulled through them. I hope our sporting exploits continue to be set aside so that we can do our best to the end.
What do you think of Malaga?
They are having a magnificent season as a local team. They recently suffered from a heavy defeat against Barcelona and they will want to save face before their home crowd. They are very motivated, but that doesn’t surprise us. I think we will have a chance to win as long as we play our game.
Higuain to AS
Gonzalo Higuain shared his views on the upcoming match with Malaga at la Rosaleda.

I have fond memories of our 4-3 victory over Malaga in the first leg because I scored the four goals and we turned the score around with just ten men. I hope we can win like that again and put more pressure on the leaders. I’ve scored 17 goals this season; 15 in La Liga, one in the King’s Cup and another in the Spanish Super Cup. You always improve through patience and perseverance… It’s important to be confident. This team believes it can celebrate the title at Cibeles this season. It will be incredible to win this year because we were far behind the leaders at one point. It would be incredible to win three consecutive league titles. Malaga fight hard. It will be important to win this game. There were international matches last week and Malaga have been able to prepare for tomorrow’s game throughout the last copuple of weeks. It will be vital for us to win if we want to keep our chances of taking the title. There is much at risk for Malaga too.
Metzelder press conference
With internationals on their way back to Madrid, Christoph Metzelder offered the Thursday press conference to discuss the upcoming match against Malaga, among other things.

How has the week been without all the internationals here?
It’s a difficult time to prepare for an important match. We only have one session with everyone here, but most of us are or have been internationals so we know what these weeks are like and that there is little time to train, which really isn’t much of an inconvenience.
Will the fact that you only have one session with everyone on hand be a factor?
We’ll find out on Saturday night, but we have experience in these kinds of situations and don’t think it will be a problem. Let’s hope no one comes back with an injury and that we can prepare for Saturday.
What must be done to win La Liga?
That’s easy… We need to win every match and Barcelona need to slip up. We’ll have our chance with them having to compete in the Champions League and Copa del Rey still, but we must first win our games.
Is the match against Malaga the first of ten finals?
Yes. We have ten finals before the season ends and we have to win each one.
Did you miss playing for Germany?
I haven’t thought much about the national team. I watched the match against Wales, but it’s not an important matter for me. I want to stay here and train hard.
Will the Clasico against Barcelona determine the outcome of La Liga?
With a six point deficit right now it won’t be a key match, which is why we must win all that come before it and wait and see.
Marcelo appears to have returned injured. Would his absence be significant against Malaga?
I watched the Brazil match and he looked good, but we have to see how he returns.
Who do you want to win the Barcelona-Bayern tie?
The Germans.
Where do you see yourself next year?
I have a year left on my contract and I tend to see my contracts through. It’s something to be discussed in the future, but right now I’m still in Madrid.
What is the key to defeating Malaga?
They have played well so far this year. Our first match in the Bernabeu was quite difficult, but we are prepared to battle it out. We have enough talent to win this match.
Barcelona demolished Malaga before the stoppage. Do you expect them to be upset?
Barcelona won in decisive fashion, but Saturday’s will be different. We hope we’re well enough prepared.
Rafael van der Vaart is apparently still with Real Madrid
He was our sole signing last summer. He had the greatest possible start for a midfielder. He played (if not started) every game till the second half of the season and has now been deserted. I think the last time he made an appearance on the field was at Anfield and that was after we had gone 3-0 down. God alone knows why he hasn’t been playing.

Rumors are now linking him with a move to Chelsea after several rumors had linked him with a return to Hamburg. With the World Cup in South Africa next year, the 26-year-old is eager to move for first-team football in order to remain part of the Holland squad, with London his preferred destination. He initially said:
Fortunately for me, Chelsea want me, so I have everything clear. If Guus Hiddink remains at the helm of Chelsea, I hope that the signing will be closed soon. I want to leave Real Madrid.
But then he later apparently has said only this and it was blown up by the British press as usual:
It’s flattering when someone like Guus Hiddink is interested as he is one of the best. If my World Cup selection is threatened I must think about a transfer.
I seriously don’t know why he hasn’t been laying. Maybe one more upset player on the squad?
Para Siempre Blanco!

Turkey 1-2 Spain
Albert Riera broke Turkey hearts in Istanbul with his added-time goal leaving the European champions in command of FIFA World Cup qualifying Group 5.

Comeback
Left-winger Riera struck two minutes past the 90 to secure a sixth successive victory in the group for La Furia Roja, putting them six points clear of second-placed Bosnia-Herzegovina. However, Spain had to dig deep for this win, having trailed at half-time to a Semih Şentürk tap-in. Xabi Alonso restored parity with a 63rd-minute penalty, enabling his Liverpool FC team-mate Riera to apply the perfect finish late on.
Del Bosque changes
Turkey coach Fatih Terim had opted for the same starting XI that suffered a 1-0 defeat at the Santiago Bernabéu four days before while Vicente Del Bosque made three changes – David Villa, Santi Cazorla and Raúl Albiol making way for David Silva, Riera and Carlos Marchena. The UEFA EURO 2008™ winners began well but had to wait till the 13th minute for their first sight of goal, Riera’s volley from distance being kept out by the diving Volkan Demirel. Fernando Torres should have done better soon after but his weak shot was gathered easily by the Fenerbahçe SK custodian.
Turkey delight
The hosts settled as the half progressed and, to the delight of the Ali Sami Yen Stadium, the men in red went ahead in the 26th minute. When Arda Turan’s right-foot cross from the left caught the Spain defence napping, Tuncay Şanlı evaded the attentions of Iker Casillas to pass the ball across the face of goal, where Semih Şentürk had the easy task of knocking into an empty net. Tuncay was centimetres away from latching on to Arda Turan’s deep centre moments later before Nihat spurned two chances to double the lead.
Late winner
Spain rallied and were awarded a second-half penalty when İbrahim Üzülmez handled Torres’s far-post effort. Alonso was handed the responsibility and the midfielder made no mistake with a calm finish. Ten minutes later, Volkan was again in action as he diverted a Torres attempt away from danger before Casillas did well to hold on to Tuncay’s shot. As the game ticked into stoppage time, however, substitute Daniel Güiza battled through down the right before picking out Riera who struck a low finish past Volkan for the clincher.
MATCH SUMMARY:
TURKEY: Volkan Demirel; Gokhan Gonul, Emre Asik, Balta, Ibrahim Uzulmez; Tuncay Sanli, Mehmet Aurelio, Emre Belozoglu, Arda Turan (Sahin, m.88); Nihat ( Karadeniz, m.77), Senturk (Sarioglu, m.80).

¿Dónde está la verdadera, José María Gutiérrez?
(Title translated as: Where is the real José María Gutiérrez?)
Hola,
We are on a hot streak in La Liga. We haven’t lost in the league since that dreadful night against the Cules (though there was the major setback against Liverpool in the Champions League showing us our true colors and the strength of our squad, proving to us that the Primera Liga is having its own recession period with its quality down in the gutter). But still we are 6 points behind them though we do have faint hopes of a mira-cules fuck up which sees us clinching #32. But then again Barcelona seems to be the only competitive team in the league. Everyone else seems to be willing to let the two of us battle it out at the top while they form a separate league of their own which seems to be as good as the second division of the English League or even the Eridivisie.
But we have gone through most of the games in that streak without one big name. A man who at times has turned games singlehandedly for us, be it his killer passes cutting channels or play making capabilities.

José María Gutiérrez 'Guti' (Background)
Guti has been kept out of the team now and again, most of the times stating injury as a reason. But last week against Almeria he was blatantly kept out of the team despite being fit but this time what Juande has to say is that he thought the other players could do a better job.
Guti was not called up because I decided not to do that. For that game, I felt other players would be better. My job is to choose the best team. Each player has a different character, but they must all be treated equally. Players are left out and they are included. I have not finished with anyone.
I am a big fan of Guti myself. I think he adds the class to Real Madrid. On his day he can rip any defense apart. But since the last time I saw him play my respect for him has come down big time. He is walking around in the pitch when everyone else had been working their arse out. He does not track back when he loses the ball, something which Raul Himself does. And all that affects the team on the whole. I do not blame Juande for dropping him but I blame Guti for getting into a situation in which he, despite being the second captain, is being dropped from not only the starting XI but the squad itself.
I am hoping we are not looking at yet another Beckham. I hope Guti stays with Real Madrid for life.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
