Sergio Ramos press conference

Sergio Ramos decided to talk to the media in order to clarify what happened this weekend.

You caused great controversy by leaving the Bernabeu during the game. What’s your side of the story?
First, I’m here mainly to clarify what happened because it’s been seen out of context and made bigger than it was. I never intended to offend anybody and I would like to apologise to the fans, my team-mates and the Club if they felt that way. I left a few minutes before the game finished because a friend of mine asked me to support him at a crucial moment of his career. I didn’t want to generate controversy or offend my team-mates. If the Club believes I should be punished, I will accept its punishment.

Mijatovic has spoken to you today…
That’s personal stuff. I had already spoken to him about this. I will comply with whatever punishment they come up with. I want to apologise to those I may have offended; I didn’t want that.

What’s bothered you the most of all the things that have been said about you?
Everything in general. I don’t like the fact that such a big deal has been made of this. We should focus more on what we do on the pitch. We all make mistakes and learn from them. I am still working hard and giving my best. Nobody can have doubts about my professional character, my loyalty and my compromise with the Club. I always give my all on the pitch.

Don’t you think it’s strange that such a big deal has been made of a silly thing like this?
That’s why I wanted to speak today. I wanted to end the matter so that people talk about sport again. That’s what matters.

Will you accept the fine?
Sure I will, if that’s the Club’s decision.

Some of your team-mates haven’t even gone to the Bernabeu when they had to miss a game. Do you feel persecuted?
I shouldn’t make comparisons. We are all slaves of our own actions and words. I assume the responsibility for what I’ve done. We must accept our mistakes and learn from them.

Some people say you left the Bernabeu because you found the match boring…
People have also said I left at half-time when I actually left two minutes before the game finished. So many things are being said that it’s hard to know what to believe. I’ve clarified it. Let’s leave it now and concentrate on our game and our chances to win the title. I always enjoy watching my team play both when I’m on or off the pitch.

Did you have more fun at the bullfight?
I always have fun watching my team. The other thing is personal and I don’t want to talk about it.

Do you feel scrutinised?
That’s what being at Real Madrid entails. We live with it.

Casillas said in an interview that the team lacks quality players to do well in the Champions League.
We all have a different opinion. We should respect what a team captain says. I’m not going to enter the debate. I’ve got enough on my plate.

Are you having a hard time?
I’m very happy this season. I feel fit and I believe I am helping the team out. I’m far from having a difficult time. Being seriously scrutinised is part of my job.

Barcelona have to face Getafe, Sevilla, Valencia… They may drop points…
The moment of truth has arrived. We may take advantage of some results. I’m happy with the way we are training and with how things are turning out for us. We are having a rather good run in the league. Let’s hope we can win the title…

Do have hopes for Barcelona to drop points, judging from their latest results in Getafe?
I hope they do. They may also start feeling tired because of the Champions League. God willing, we will be able to catch up with them.

Florentino Perez signed you for the Club. What do you think of his possible return as President?
I wouldn’t have a problem with that. He was a great President and I will always be grateful to him for having faith in me and paying so much money when nobody knew who I was. I still have a good relationship with him.
