Huntelaar to Marca
In an interview with sports newspaper Marca, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar commented on his commitment to the club and his first two months as a Madridista.

Anything can happen and we’ll do our best. Madrid found itself behind Barça in the past and managed to win La Liga. We must take each match as it comes and hope that they slip up. I just scored for the Netherlands and it served me well. Scoring is important to forwards. I have to wait for my opportunity. I will get a chance if I remain patient and work hard. People here are very open, welcoming and really cheer me up. The weather he is marvelous; a lot better than in the Netherlands. I love this city.
Javi Garcia press conference
Javi Garcia is a true Madridista that wants to succeed at the Club. The player works hard every day to show Juande he can be useful to the team.

The team is doing well since Juande took over. What’s changed?
The team has a different attitude, especially in defence. It is very difficult to score against us now. I think that’s been the greatest change. We work collectively.
Does criticism to the team’s style bother the squad?
We know people demand that we play well besides winning every game, but the latter is more important. We have to improve, but these good results are making the team more confident. I think our style will improve gradually, but we have to keep on winning.
You defeated Sporting 7-1 at the start of the campaign. It seems Sunday’s game may be easy…
Every game is different. The fact that we scored seven goals against them then doesn’t mean we will do the same this weekend. Their crowd is very loud and Sporting are going to make things tough for us. We’ll have to do our best to take three very important points.
Has you personal ambition been satisfied?
Not at all. I want to play. I am very ambitious and I want to play as much as possible. I have to try my best and show the coach I can be useful, but the team is what really matters to me. I hope my daily effort finds reward sooner or later. I have faith in my chances.
Sporting coach Manolo Preciado recently said the only unbeatable side right now is Barcelona.
I don’t think unbeatable teams exist. It is very hard to win against Barcelona, but that doesn’t mean it’s impossible. We haven’t lost a game in two months, which proves we are having a good run. Any team can have a bad day and lose. Every team can be defeated.
Faubert and Lass arrived to reinforce the midfield. How do youth teamers feel about these signings?
Academy players have had their chance to shine and many have done well. These new signings play against their interests. It isn’t easy to play for Real Madrid because the Club is very demanding. Youth teamers have to fight harder and must never give up.
Guti rejoined the team this week. How does he feel?
He’s fine. He hasn’t felt any pain. His return is very important to us.
How excited is the team about the clash with Liverpool?
We are focusing on the two league games that precede it. It will be a very important match, but we have to concentrate on one game at a time in order to do well and win.
Drenthe to Marca
Royston Drenthe told Marca that he is determined to be successful at Real Madrid.

The Bernabeu is my home and I want to earn the fans’ affection. It is the stadium of the best club in the world. I want to play at home again and prove my worth.
Juande helps me a lot. He is the perfect coach for a player. He knows exactly when we are fit and when we aren’t. He tells us when he feels we can do better, and that helps. Sergio Ramos told me. ‘He is an amazing coach,’ he said to me, ‘Don’t worry. He is going to help you a lot.’ Marcos Alvarez is also a fantastic coach and a great person. He always says to me, ‘Relax Royston. You are a very good player. You just need to calm down.’
I can improve considerably. I’m only 21 years old and I learn something new ever day. I am as excited as a youth system player, working hard to please the team and remain here many years.
I always try my best on the pitch. I’m sure I will soon play as well as I know I can. All my team-mates are very supportive. Guti always watches out for me. I can rely on him whenever I have a problem.
The match against Liverpool will be very tough. We would have preferred a different opponent, but Real Madrid is one of the greatest clubs in Europe and we are capable of defeating anyone.
Parejo press conference
Daniel Parejo offered Wednesday’s press conference following the practice match the first team played against Castilla.

How was the match against Real Madrid Castilla?
It was good; very competitive. We were all anxious to play. Real Madrid Castilla played tough.
What’s it been like being a member of the first team?
Great. It’s always an important step for an academy player, and it’s not impossible. Playing for Real Madrid is the greatest thing that can happen to you. I was injured when I first got here, but I am ready to give 100% to the team. You can never say ‘no’ to Real Madrid.
Do you see yourself playing in the Bernabeu?
I am going to fight for it. We all like to play, especially in the Bernabeu. It would be incredible.
How did you feel about Schuster leaving and Juande stepping in?
The team reacted well. We are winning matches and morale is through the roof.
What can you bring to the table?
Everything I can as a footballer and a person.
It must be frustrating when you keep winning and can’t cut into Barcelona’s lead…
Barcelona are in great form, but we won’t give up. We’ll fight until the end; it’s what Real Madrid is known for. We will always have a chance to catch them as long as we keep winning.
Have Liverpool changed much since the end of the year and now?
They were playing better than they are now. They are one of the best teams in Europe, and it’s going to make for a great tie. I hope we make it to the quarterfinals.
Real Madrid 4-2 Real Madrid Castilla
Real Madrid and Castilla clashed at the Alfredo di Stefano Stadium in this morning’s training session. The match was used to work on the tactics both sides will deploy against their opponents this weekend. The first team won the day.

Guti and Parejo -accompanied by Castilla’s Mateos in midfield- enjoyed their first minutes of playing time in 2009. Castilla’s Agus and Real Madrid C’s Cruz played for the first team in defence, given that many internationals have left the squad and that Metzelder is injured with lower back pain. Higuain also missed the clash and jogged on his own with fitness trainer Jordi Garcia. Faubert played the entire game, showcasing his great skill, class and speed.
Castilla tried their best and scored the opening goal through Vazquez (16′). Faubert came close to netting a strike after a brilliant run. Saviola scored the equaliser thirty minutes into the game thanks to a brilliant assists from Parejo.
Drenthe netted the first team’s second strike from an amazingly strong and precise free-kick (45′) and was later awarded a penalty. Saviola took the shot and scored (47’). Drenthe again thrilled the hundreds of fans on the stands by dribbling past several Castilla players in a succession of step-overs.
But Castilla hadn’t said their last word yet and Alpio soon scored from a brilliant pass by Palanca (59’). The second team had another four chances to draw the match, but Codina saved the day. Saviola eventually sealed the game with another strike (67’).
Real Madrid Castilla: Felipe Ramos (Adan, 45′); Velayos, Gary, Molero, Marcos Alonso (Anton, 45′); Tebar, Mosquera (Alvaro Lopez, 45′), Palanca, Vazquez; Bueno (Zamora, 45′), Acuña (Alipio, 30′);
Goals:
0-1 (16′): Vazquez
1-1 (35′):Saviola
2-1 (45′): Drenthe
3-1 (47′): Saviola
3-2 (59′): Alipio
4-2 (67′): Saviola
Injury report: Left back Michel Salgado had to be replaced in the match against Castilla by youth teamer Villafañe. Medical tests have revealed the player suffers from a Grade I muscle injury on one of his femoral biceps. Salgado will miss 2-3 weeks.
Spain 2-0 England
David Villa kept up his rich vein of international form to set Spain on the way to a deserved friendly victory against England in Seville.

Villa run
Villa scored for the sixth successive international late in the first half as Spain gradually upped the pressure en route to their seventh straight victory, extending their unbeaten run to 29 games in the process. Substitute Fernando Llorente headed in late on to settle a meeting of the only two European teams with four wins from as many 2010 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
James beaten
While Spain started with eight players who took part in the UEFA EURO 2008™ final, England had a less familiar lineup. The visitors nevertheless pushed hard early on but Spain were soon on top. On 36 minutes Xabi Alonso’s threaded pass found Villa on the edge of the box and he weaved his way past John Terry and Phil Jagielka before firing past David James. Terry then blocked a Villa effort and Alonso shot just wide.
Llorente goal
Both teams made half-time changes including David Beckham’s introduction for his 108th cap, equalling 1966 World Cup-winning captain Bobby Moore’s record for an England outfield player. However, it was a Spain replacement who struck in the 82nd minute, Llorente heading his first international goal from Xavi Hernández’s free-kick. Carlton Cole nearly pulled one back on his England debut but after rounding fellow substitute Pepe Reina his shot was blocked by Carlos Marchena. Spain resume qualifying at home to Turkey on 28 March; four days later they go to Istanbul, when England welcome Ukraine.
Van der Vaart to Marca
Rafael Van der Vaart will do whatever it takes to achieve glory at Real Madrid. The Dutch midfielder and his wife Sylvie sat down with Spanish newspaper Marca, during which he discussed his primary goal of winning the Champions League.

Everything was going well at the beginning of the season. I had a great feeling. I don’t think I was playing poorly, but I was benched for a few matches. It’s not easy to get used to being a reserve because I had been a starter throughout most of my career. After a few months here I found myself on the bench. It’s not easy. I also was in the middle of looking for a house because I had spent three months in a hotel and my wife was still working in Germany.
I signed for five years, but I hope to be here many more years. I want to be an important part of Real Madrid’s history and win many titles. That’s what I’ve always dreamed about.
We’ll have our chances. We’re Real Madrid, which is why I think Liverpool are frightened of us. We have great players. It’s going to be a great tie. I hope the entire world watches and that we win. The team is working hard to be in perfect shape. We’re anxious to do well in Europe, and if we end up as champions I will be capable of anything. I will do anything to win the Champions League.
Spain vs England | International Friendly | Preview
Spain are on a 28-game unbeaten run and host England tonight in Seville in a stadium where they have never lost, but head coach Vicente del Bosque is taking nothing for granted with crucial FIFA World Cup qualifying games on the horizon.

Europe’s finest
Del Bosque’s side have made the perfect start on the road to South Africa in 2010, taking maximum points from their first four Group 5 games. However, with their next competitive fixtures being back-to-back matches against UEFA EURO 2008™ semi-finalists Turkey on 28 March and 1 April, Del Bosque feels there can be no slip-ups in the friendly against England. “We’ll be looking to avoid making errors in this game,” the former Real Madrid CF boss said. “This is the last opportunity we have to see what we can do before the Turkey games. England have improved a lot under Fabio Capello and they have some really good players. I feel this is a very prestigious friendly between the best two teams in Europe right now.”
Young hopefuls
With injuries preventing Cesc Fàbregas (knee) and Carles Puyol (thigh strain) from joining up with the squad, there may be opportunities for FC Barcelona duo Gerard Piqué and Sergio Busquets to win their first senior caps. Both players have impressed for the Liga leaders this term and Del Bosque has been particularly interested in 20-year-old midfielder Busquets’ progress. “He’s been a welcome sight over the past few months,” the coach said. “Despite being so young, he’s tactically very good; he controls the midfield well. The only area I would say he could maybe improve is in goalscoring, but having said that he does a fantastic job box-to-box.”
Home rule
Should England manage to beat their hosts at the Ramón Sánchez-Pizjuán Stadium, they will be the first team to do so. Spain have won 17 of the 22 games they have played there and with La Furia Roja enjoying an unbeaten run stretching back to 15 November 2006, the odds are against an away win. “It’s great that the game is taking place at this stadium,” Del Bosque said after it was announced the friendly was a sell-out. “The national team have always been cherished down here and I’m convinced that we’ll see proof of that on Wednesday night.”
Codina press conference
Real Madrid’s third-string goalkeeper was upbeat when discussing the team’s Liga chances during today’s press conference.

How did Huntelaar’s comments sit with the team?
It’s news that came out in the press, but he hasn’t said anything to us. I think he enjoys it here. He may not have had much playing time yet, but he will in due course.
Would you be mad for not playing?
I try to suck it up my own way. I get angry with myself, and when I train, I try to do so in the best manner possible so that the coach will count on me.
Beckenbauer said he can’t hold onto Ribery. Names are starting to be thrown around…
He’s a great player, but let’s talk about those who are already here. If new players come, they will be welcomed with open arms, but let’s think about this year and nothing else.
Does the team feel the absence of the twelve players who are on international duty?
In past stoppages players left for ten days, but this time it’s only two. They’ll play a match and train hard, so I don’t think we will feel it too much.
Barcelona have yet to lose and Liverpool appear to have become your only goal.
We’ve got a good streak going and Barcelona’s is incredible. We’re only focusing on ourselves. If they slip up, great. If they don’t, all we can do is congratulate them.
Several teams wanted to sign you during the winter transfer window.
I entertained a couple options in December but decided to stay. I’ll see what the club has to say this summer. I owe everything to this club. If they think I need to go elsewhere to play, I will go. If not, I will stay. There were some good options, but they asked me to stay, and here I am.
There’s been a lot said about the injury to Gerrard.
We don’t like anyone to miss a match to injury. I would love to see the best from Liverpool play the best from Real Madrid. Bad luck for him.
Colsa said that Real Madrid work like a small team.
We’re a team and play as such. We may play better or worse at times, but we always want to win.
Internationals and a little more
Thirteen Madridistas have been called up for international duty this week: Casillas and Ramos (Spain), Marcelo (Brazil), Gago and Heinze (Argentina), Cannavaro (Italy), Pepe (Portugal), Lass (France), Sneijder, Van der Vaart, Robben and Huntelaar (Netherlands), and Adam Szalai (Hungary). Juande Ramos will have to wait until Thursday to have his full squad on hand to begin preparing for Saturday’s clash against Sporting Gijon.

Faubert and Luccin: Don't they look like twins?
In other news, Beto and Uche, who played alongside Julien Faubert at Girondins, sat down with newspaper AS to discuss the Frenchman’s potential.
Uche:
I was very happy to read that Real Madrid has signed him. He’s the kind of player that all forwards like because they can capitalize off his crosses. I remember that we connected well when playing together because Faubert is fast.
Beto:
He will be very important for Real Madrid and he will triumph there if they allow him to. He’s a good person. He accepted me like he already knew me when I signed for Girondins. Speed is his best asset. He played as a right back or right winger for Girondins, but I don’t know where Juande will position him. He had a couple good seasons with West Ham and now has the chance to do the same here. He just needs a little luck.
Amongst claims that we are playing boring football, Pipita has suggested that it is not the case. He said:
The key thing is that we haven’t conceded any goals and the team continue winning. I don’t think that we are boring. The team have won once again and picked up three points from a difficult game.
The most important thing is that we continue along this line, to win seven successive games isn’t easy. We have to continue like that, to win next Sunday in Gijon, then against Betis in the Bernabeu and wait for the Champions League game.
The tie against Liverpool is a very important game for us, if we win the two games leading up to it we will go into that match with a lot of confidence. What is important now is that we rest and think about the next game. We need to continue along this line and continue working.
Iker Casillas equaled Francisco Buyo’s record of 454 official appearances in goal for Real Madrid in Saturday’s win against Racing. Guillermo G. Honrubia from uefa.com has more to say.
And finally, Real Madrid Foundation President, Vicente Boluda, and President of the Cervantes Association for Cultural Action and Hispanic-Moroccan Friendship in Tangier, Dr. Mohamed El Khattabi, will sign a collaborative agreement on Wednesday 11 February at Souani Stadium to open a Social Integration Sports Academy for 900 boys and girls.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!

Real Madrid 1-0 Racing Santander
Real Madrid took their seventh straight victory against Racing Santander at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium thanks to Higuain and a very solid defence. The Argentine netted his 13th league strike and the defensive line conceded no goals. Iker Casillas played his 454th clash with the team.

The strenght of Real Madrid’s defence is beginning to be overwhelming; they are the least scored upon team in the league so far in 2009, conceding only one goal in their last seven games. They worked hard to defend against Racing, who had won five games as a visiting side and have scored more goals from set pieces than any other team in the championship.
Racing put a lot of pressure on Real Madrid from the start and looked to surprise them in attack through Lacen and Colsa’s work in midfield. Aware that this would happen, Juande lined up Lass, Van de Vaart and Sneijder in midfield. Rafael served the team’s first chance with a free-kick that Ramos finished off, but the defender’s shot wasn’t on target (10′).
Lass became increasingly important thanks to his wise distribution of the ball; his opponents could do nothing to stop him. His excellent job allowed the team to have three consecutive dangerous ventures in attack (12′). The Dutch forward served a cross into the box that found no one to finish it off. Keeper Toño then cleared a strong shot of his with the right foot. Finally, Sneijder pased the ball to Van der Vaart, whose lob was cleared by the keeper. Rául also had a chance in the final minutes of the first half when a header of his missed the mark by inches.
Higuain scores; Faubert makes debut
It only took Higuain three minutes into the second half to score the team’s goal. He made great use of an assist served by Raul with his head and beat Toño with a crossed shot. Racing seemed to be in a state of shock and Real Madrid used this to try to score another strike. Pepe surprised the visitors with a powerful sprint. He passed the ball to Higuain, who shot on target again, but Toño cleared the ball with his right leg. Coach Muñiz was forced to replace Lacen and Tchite with Toni Moral and Luccin.
Faubert came on for Robben because Juande wanted to try to surprise Racing down the right wing. Javi Garcia and Marcelo also came on. In the end, Real Madrid won their seventh straight victory, no doubt the best present for Iker Casillas, who today caught up with his idol Paco Buyo by playing his 454th game with the first team.
Lineups:
Real Madrid: Casillas, Sergio Ramos, Pepe, Cannavaro, Heinze, Lass, Sneijder (Javi García 75′), Robben (Faubert 64′), Van der Vaart (Marcelo 81′), Higuaín, Raúl;
Racing de Santander: Toño, Valera, César Navas, Oriol, Marcano, Colsa, Serrano, Lacen (Luccin 65′), Jonathan Pereira, Zigic, Tchité (Toni Moral 61′);
Goal:
1-0, 49 min – Higuain
Highlights:
Matchday 22 of the Primera Liga.
Real Madrid wished to express their support for Marta de Castillo’s family. The 17 year-old girl went missing on 24 January in Seville. More then 3,000 people protested in that city today asking for more police help, and the squad wished to help by wearing a shirt that read ‘All of us are Marta’.

Miguel Angel Arroyo, Director general of the President’s Office, was in Granada today for the opening of the travelling Real Madrid exhibition and said:
Real Madrid shares the grief of Marta del Castillo’s family. We hope their suffering ends soon.

Real Madrid vs Racing Santander | Spanish Primera Liga | Round 22 | Preview
Real Madrid want to earn more excellent results against Racing Santander this evening (20:00 CET) in order to put pressure on leaders Barcelona.

In order to snatch a seventh straight victory tonight, the Whites will have to defeat the dangerous Racing Santander, who are aiming for the European qualifying spots on the table. The northern side coached by Muñiz -who played for Juande at Rayo Vallecano- are currently tenth on the table with 28 points. They have won, drawn and lost seven games. Their most dangerous man is striker Nikola Zigic, who has scored several goals for them since his return to the team in january.
Faubert’s debut
Juande’s squad list has few new faces, and one of them is new signing Julien Faubert, who could make his debut in La Liga this evening. Miguel Torres has also made the coach’s squad list -his first in recent weeks-.
Robben in, Gago out
Arjen Robben has been sick with flu all week, but has recovered in time for the match. On the other hand with Fernando Gago serving a one-match suspension and Guti and Metzelder still recovering from injury, Juande Ramos will have to alter his lineup for Saturday’s match against Racing. Drenthe, Codina, Marcelo, Parejo and Salgado were also left off this list, but making his first appearance as a Madridista is Julien Faubert. The team will resume training on Tuesday.
SQUAD LIST
Goalkeepers: Casillas, Dudek
Defenders: Pepe, Ramos, Cannavaro, Heinze, Torres
Midfielders: Lass, Sneijder, Robben, Faubert, Van der Vaart, Javi Garcia
Forwards: Raul, Saviola, Higuain, Huntelaar

Faubert to Grada Blanca
Julien Faubert recently signed for Real Madrid. His speed and strength make him a useful player to the team and he is anxious to prove his worth.

Do you feel happy for being here?
I’m very happy because I’m at a big Club now and I’m excited to start training.
It’s all happened very quickly, hasn’t it?
Well the Club wanted to sign me. It tried very hard and I decided to come here. I’m very happy.
Is it true that you thought it was a joke at first?
Yes, of course. During the transfer market window people sometimes call you and tell you things that aren’t true, but I called my agent and he told me it was real.
Were your two years at west Ham frustrating because of your injury?
They were. I tore my Achilles tendon in my first year and couldn’t play for six months. I played 15 games this season with our old coach, but the new manager didn’t give me many chances to play and I wanted to join another club.
Do you feel you’ve come here with a clean sheet and having a point to prove?
I’ve come here to try to play. I want to meet the squad first and play later.
How does it feel to wear the same shirt Zidane wore?
Great emotion overcomes me. I felt this before when I took his number on the French national team. He is a great name in football. He won many titles and I am very excited about it.
Are you hoping playing for Real Madrid will start a steady international career for you?
I hope so. When I joined West Ham, the national coach told me it would be harder for me to make the cut. If I manage to play regularly for Real Madrid I will have more chances of playing for France.
Describe yourself as a player.
I can play down both sides in attack. I can also play as a right back and in midfield. I’m fast and strong.
You played with Lass Diarra on the French Under-21 side.
I played with him there and on the main national team also. I know him very well. I know I can count on him if I need anything.
I suppose Mahamadou Diarra will also help you adapt when he’s around.
Yes, sure. He also speaks French. I have to learn Spanish again… I learned some in school, but I speak English better now.
You must know Liverpool well from playing in the Premiership.
It is very hard to play against Liverpool. I know it is very important for Real Madrid to try to win the Champions League and I’m here to try to win the title too.
Who in particular are you looking forward to play alongside?
Raúl, Guti, Casillas…
Talking about the double pivot…
Talking about the double pivot, Juande’s double-pivot strategy is working quite well isn’t it? We have won six games on the trot conceding only one in the process (against Osasuna) amidst the complaints about Real Madrid not playing their trademark brand of attractive football that they are known for. But I really don’t think what we are doing is wrong. We are employing a defensive formation with Gago and Lass playing holding roles in the center of the pitch, but isn’t it merely because of the fact that that is all that we have to use. Guti and Parejo have been injured. Though Parejo has recovered he isn’t match fit nor does have the experience. Playing Rafa van der Vaart alongside either pivot is going to overload the hole behind the strikers (on field) with Sneijder occupying the position most of the time. We just acquired Faubert so we had to use Sneijder on the left leaving Van der Vaart, Javi Garcia and Lass/Gago as our only options for that particular position. Even Steve McLaren can realise that the best possible option is to use the Lass-Gago partnership and that is exactly what Ramos has done. He voiced his frustration at critics accusing Real Madrid of being defensive saying:
I do not agree with the criticism of Real Madrid. It is a label I do not agree with. Are Barca a defensive team because they have lost the least games? No. It is clear that we are not shining like Barcelona, but we are picking up results at the moment. My starting point in a game is not defensive though.
Talking about Barca, Wesley Sneijder who, according to me atleast rightfully, claims Barcelona are fortunate to hold a 12-point lead at the top of La Liga. Sneijder believes Madrid are more of a team than their great rivals who have been heavily reliant on individual performances to take a grip on the title race with which I do not agree with especially after watching the past few games and Robben’s plays,
The difference at Barcelona is (Lionel) Messi. We are a team and they are individuals. They do have a lot of quality and this season they have a great team. But they are also lucky, as they showed against Racing the other day (when Messi scored twice).
This season they are having the luck that we had last term because there are moments when they do not play so well, but they do have great individuals and luck.
Sneijder admits that he is yet to return to his best form following a three-month spell out with injury following last summer’s European Championships. The Dutch international told AS:
I am not happy because I am not playing to the level I want to. I know that I can improve and that I have more quality than I am showing now.
Talking about Messi, what Messi is to Barcelona, Gerrard is to Liverpool. The first leg of the Champions League against the Merseyside Reds is going to be pretty easy as we will mostly be facing a spineless Red team with inspirational captain Steven Gerrard being a doubt thanks to the injury he sustained against Everton on Tuesday. The midfielder hobbled off 15 minutes into the 1-0 loss at Goodison Park, after pulling his left hamstring and the club have confirmed that he faces three weeks on the sidelines.
Talking about English midfielders, on Friday morning Spanish national team coach Vicente del Bosque made public the squad list for next week’s friendly between Spain and England. Iker Casillas and Sergio Ramos are among those whose duty has been requested.
Squad list:
Goalkeepers: Casillas, Reina
Defenders: Albiol, Arbeloa, Capdevila, Juanito, Marchena, Pique, Puyol, Sergio Ramos
MIdfielders: Xavi Alonso, Sergio Busquets, Cazorla, Riera, Xavi, Silva, Iniesta, Senna
Forwards: Guiza, Llorente, Torres, Villa.
Talking about International fixtures, the Spanish national team will host Turkey at the Santiago Bernabeu on 28 in World Cup 2010 qualifying action. The two teams have never met, and Vicente del Bosque’s men are still undefeated.

Talking about Spaniards, I just read about the rumor that we are targeting Xabi Alonso for next season and the fact that Rafael Benitez possibly our manager for next season is bringing along the Spaniard. Its just a rumor so don’t get too excited. Its Arsene Wenger whom I want. You too are allowed to dream.
Talking about next season, Racing Santander Juan Ramon Lopez Muniz has explained why on-loan Ezequiel Garay, who will return to Real in the summer, has not been in the Racing team recently.
Garay did not play against Barcelona because the previous week another player (Oriol) did very well and I kept him in. Nothing more. He did not do pre-season because of an injury and he is not in the same form as last season, but he is improving. I know that he is a superb central defender and a professional and I think that he is worthy of playing for Real Madrid.
And finally, talking about Racing Santander, we play them tonight at the Bernabeu. Robben is back! Faubert makes the list. The match preview would be my next post.
Para Siempre Blanco!
Hala Madrid!!
Juande Ramos press conference
Hoping to extend the six game winning streak to seven against Racing Santander, Juande Ramos offered what he thinks is the key to victory.

How is Robben?
He will be included in the squad list and the medical staff will help us decide if he can play. I am not worried though because there are other players who can step up. I know this team’s output will not change.
Might Faubert debut on Saturday?
It’s an option being that he plays along the wings. Robben can play on either side, which is why he may be an option.
Has the defense worked on anything special to try to stop Racing’s powerful offense?
They are a dangerous team that has been working hard. They have won their last few road matches, but we’re not worried about any one particular player. We must be the better team, dominate the match, hold the initiative, and not allow them to reach our box, which is where Zigic can be deadly.
Does Real Madrid depend too much on Robben?
No. We have other players who can contribute. The team performed well in matches he didn’t play in. We have plenty of depth on this squad and enough talent not to have to depend on any one player. I’d love it if he is ready to go, but I have 25 other players who will put forth the same effort.
How important are the fans during home matches?
Having fan support when playing at home is important. Having 80,000 people in the stands is great. The team has to give them reason to cheer for us. The team wants to play well and make the fans happy.
Have you noticed any signs of Barcelona letting up?
You ask me about Barcelona every week. I don’t pay attention to them at all. We must win out matches and are not worried about other teams. We’ve managed to open a gap between us and the third place team. The situation was very worrisome a month and half ago.
Have you had time to think about the Liverpool match?
Racing is my only concern now. I couldn’t even tell you what time we play Sporting. We have 20 days before playing Liverpool, so I’m not going to waste time talking about it now.
With Robben possibly sidelined and Gago out, might your tactical plans change at all?
Real Madrid has plenty of depth and talent. I am only worried about our injured players. If Gago doesn’t play, someone else will. Everyone is ready to go in the bat of an eye, and they are all waiting for their chance to show what they’ve got. Whether we change anything or not depends on the kind of player we put on the pitch.
Huntelaar to Realmadrid.com
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar has played five matches since signing for Real Madrid. Although he won’t be playing in what’s left of this season’s Champions League, the Dutch Striker dreams of “winning a European Cup with Real Madrid.” He sat down with Realmadrid.com to discuss his first month as a Madridista.

How do you feel now that your first month is behind you?
I am very happy to be playing for Real Madrid. It’s a great club, the most important in the world. My debut was nice. I wasn’t able to score unfortunately, but I had a great chance. I have to play more and continue fighting because I know the goals will come.
Did you follow La Liga when you lived in the Netherlands?
I watch any football match that is shown on television, and in Holland they air matches from Spain, Germany and Italy. I watch because there are a lot of Dutch players who are friends of mine and play for foreign teams.
What are your thoughts on teams in La Liga?
I know almost every team by name and I have seen the majority of them play because I followed La Liga from Holland. I think this is Europe’s strongest competition.
How have Real Madrid prepared for their match against Racing Santander?
They’re a great Spanish team who play with a good system. I am familiar with it and with some of their players. They now have Zigic, who came back from Valencia. I have seen some of their matches and know they did a good job against Barcelona. We’ll have to be mindful.
Is La Liga a rough competition?
It’s a great competition. I think this and the English league are the two best. I can’t say it’s rough, but it is a bit more tough than the Dutch league, for example.
A win on Saturday would make it seven straight. Is it possible?
I hope we win our seventh straight. It will help is a lot because it will keep out confidence high. We also need to continue pressuring Barcelona. They have a substantial lead on us, but we need to continue winning to not lose sight.
Torres press conference
Miguel Torres has worked very hard to reach the first team and his goal is to prove he can be important for Real Madrid.

Your situation on the team has become more complicated in recent weeks. Has it surprised you not to make the latest squad lists?
Naturally, I am not pleased by it, but I’m not going to make things easy. My goal is to continue to work hard and prove I’m here thanks to my efforts. Nobody’s given me anything for free.
There’s much talk about the Champions League, but Racing Santander will play at the Bernabeu on Saturday. They played well against Barcelona. How well prepared are Real Madrid for the match?
We’ve won a series of games and we are growing more confident. We can win our next few clashes and improve on our performances. Racing are a good team that won’t make things easy for us. They played well the other day. I think we can win and perform well if we are motivated and have a clear idea of what we must do.
How is Faubert adapting? How has Parejo’s return been like?
I hardly know Julien, but he seems to be very motivated. he is fit, strong, fast and anxious to do well. I hope he can help the team; as a winger, he can do a lot of good for us. I’ve known Parejo since my days in the academy and he has a great chance to shine now. He is excited now that he’s recovered from his injury. I know he can do a lot for this team.
How does Palanca feel?
He is a bit downhearted because he wanted to be on the first team. He is working very hard on Castilla to get promoted. It is harder for him to do so now, but he has already proven his worth. He just needs playing time.
What do you think of the academy?
It is very difficult to reach the first team because there is a lot of pressure and it is packed with excellent players. There are gradually more youth teamers on the squad. Castilla are doing a good job. The squad has many players that could play for the first team. I encourage them to keep working hard because it is rare to get a chance to be promoted and they have to make good use of it.
Is Gerrard’s injury good news?
I don’t know how badly injured he is, but his would be an important absence in the game. But I think people want spectacle in a Champions League match and it would be disappointing for the crowd to miss him. I would love to coincide with him; I am a big fan.
Do youth teamers lack friends on the first team that could help them get promoted?
Youth teamers get promoted with hardly any help from others. They make it on their own, trying to make good use of the chances they get. None of us expects any extra help and it helps us mature and work harder. I ask for young players who have achieved everything on their own to have continuity on the team and to receive some solidarity; we can do much for the team.
How important is the fans’ support in home games?
The fans will always support us. They’ve responded very well on occasions in which they could’ve been very angry. They are backing us 100% in difficult games. It’s important for us to have their support.
What do you think of Racing Santander?
They’re having a great season. Zigic’s return has done them a lot of good. Munitis and Jonathan are also great players. I’m sure they worry about us more than we worry about them.
How much does the team depend on Robben?
He is a quality player that has skill others lack. He is sick today, but he is strong and will be able to play on Saturday. Someone else could play in his place and try his best if he doesn’t recover in time.
Santillana, Aguilar and Corral
Santillana, Aguilar and Corral were Racing Santander players before they joined the Club. The three of them talked to us about how they felt about signing for Real Madrid.

Santillana: My signing was beneficial for both Racing and Real Madrid. The latter club was interested in signing Aguilar, who had already made his mark as a player. He was Racing’s leading man and he had been playing in the Second Division for three years. But Racing’s financial debt was larger than what Real Madrid was willing to offer for the player, so they gave the Club the chance to sign other men. Corral and I were the chosen ones. Racing’s debt was erased with what Real Madrid gave them for all of us.
Corral: I was finishing my compulsory military service and a journalist phoned me when I returned to camp. He told me I had just signed for Real Madrid. I naturally didn’t believe him because it was the first I heard of the matter. A couple of days later, I got in a car and drove to Madrid to have my medical examination. Antonio Calderon told Don Santiago Bernabeu’s driver to take me to Atocha train station. It was quite an adventure; I didn’t even take any clothes with me.”
Aguilar: I was 21 years old and the arrival at the Club was quite shocking to me. I can’t even imagine what it must have been like for someone as young as Santillana.
Santillana: I thought Real Madrid were going to loan me out to another team because I was very young and inexperienced. That’s why I told Raimundo Saporta and Calderon to loan me out to Racing. I was lucky to earn coach Miguel Muñoz’s trust and I stayed on the team for years.
Corral: I have the photo of our presentation in an album at home. Whenever I look at it I remember the beautiful time I had at Real Madrid. I am delighted about the stint I had on the team.
Santillana: The three of us looked a bit out of place, but we were very handsome in that picture. It’s amazing how time has gone by… Look at those haircuts! And the shirt… It was completely white, without any advertising. I feel very proud whenever I loot at the photo.
Aguilar: I feel envy now when I look at it. It was the greatest moment in my life then because every footballer aspires to play for Real Madrid. I was on the team for eight years and I lived through more good experiences than bad ones. My face in the picture shows just how excited I was about being part of Real Madrid.
Butragueño’s silver annivesary
Twenty-five years ago today Emilio Butragueño debuted for Real Madrid’s first team and changed the course of history for the club. The Madridistas were losing 2-0 to Cadiz that day, but Butragueño appeared and scored a brace to salvage the match. A quarter century later, Emilio Butragueño stopped by Realmadrid Radio to reflect on one of the most productive careers of Spanish football.

What do you remember from your debut?
I remember Di Stefano telling me, “Kid, warm up.” It was a very important day for me because it opened up the doors for my future with Real Madrid. That said, it wouldn’t have meant a thing without all the hard work. I wouldn’t be where I am today without that match.
Is it true that your legs were shaking as you were about to step onto the pitch?
My heart was beating really fast, but I wasn’t that nervous. Looking back on it I realize how much football has changed. I began warming up by myself. The fitness coach didn’t used to travel with the team, which nowadays is unimaginable. I didn’t think about what debuting might mean, if I was going to be able to score or not, if I would play well… I was pretty calm alter a long week of speculating whether I would travel with the team. My heart began beating a little faster than normal, but that’s about it.
You were a member of the “Quinta del Buitre,” which for many was the best generation of Spanish footballers ever.
Many things had to take place for that to happen. We were players who complemented one another and just happened to be on the same team at the same time. Then there was Alfredo di Stefano, who had the courage to play us all; quite a rarity in those days. But we were at the top of our game for ten years and all of us were internationals. Madridismo can be proud when something like that happens.
Humility has always been one of your defining characteristics. Have you never believed so?
Real Madrid is so powerful that when you put on that shirt you all of a sudden skyrocket in popularity. It can also be a trap, but I have been a Real Madrid member my whole life and have always felt that way. Real Madrid is my home. Although I’d like to live in Sydney in the future, I will always maintain my ties to Real Madrid. I have always felt that Madrid is greater than me. I have to serve the club no matter where I am.
What was it like being one of the main icons of Spain?
Nothing out of the ordinary. Things happen in life, but everything comes to and end. I have always placed more importance on the person than his or her character. I got to play for Real Madrid and was lucky enough that the circumstances happened to favor me a lot. Generally speaking, society decides who to pay attention to. We were coming off a poor World Cup performance and Real Madrid hadn’t won a title in several years. But then we showed up. I just happened to be a forward, a position that draws more attention. People enjoyed the way I played, which was a lot different than many were used to. I was also a nice guy who tried to respect all those around me.
Very few moms wouldn’t have like you as their daughter’s boyfriend.
That’s because they didn’t know me (laughs). Like my dad always used to say, “He really knew how to trick the country.” Honestly though, I had a likeable image. I am not a bad person. I was imitated a lot and it never bothered me. One time I was asked to take the stage at a movie. I was pretty shy then. Well, perhaps more reserved than shy. I didn’t enjoy going out into public much.
Eindhoven: the one bad taste Madridistas have in their mouths from those days.
Hmmm… I recall two very tough days in my career. Eindhoven and the quarterfinal of the 1986 World Cup against Belgium, when we lost in the penalty shootout. That night against Eindhoven was terrible. We were the best team in Europe that year. We had eliminated Maradona’s Napoli, Porto, and Bayern Munich. There only used to be one team per country. We first drew 1-1 at home and then were eliminated after not being able to score. The team was very upset, especially the veteran players who saw their last chance for a European Cup slip through their fingers.
Alfredo di Stefano gave you the alternative, and you did something similar with Raul, albeit in different fashion.
Raul is extraordinary. All the young players should look up to him and learn from him. Raul is loyal to the values of Real Madrid, one being the resistance to losing. Raul is a man who since the age of 17 has showed incredible self-confidence. At that age and without that confidence you have no right to be in this locker room. He is very ambitious. What he has done for Real Madrid, and I don’t just mean his 307 goals, is praiseworthy.
Van der Vaart press conference
Rafael van der Vaart believes in the team’s chances to win its third consecutive league title.

What do you think of Faubert’s signing? How does it affect you?
We need him right now. He is fast and strong, just what the team needs. He adapts perfectly to my style because he is very fast.
Do you think you can do more for the team?
I am not a starter right now. I am working very hard to be one and I am self-critical with my performances.
You are not playing as well as you did at Hamburg.
I played very well in my first few games, but my performance level dropped after that. I am working very hard right now and I feel fit.
Do you think the position you currently have suits your skills?
I am a midfielder. That’s where I play and I think I do a good job.
Do you think you needed the physical training Juande Ramos and Marcos Alvarez are now implementing?
We’ve all trained very hard and we are in better form now.
Robben is sick. Do you think the team depends too much on him to win its games?
Arjen is a very important player for us. It’s a shame he is sick right now. He is a fantastic player, but I think we can also do well without him.
What did you think of Heinze’s encouraging screams prior to the game against Numancia?
We don’t have the expression he used in Holland, but It’s funny. We have to work hard to win our games.
Do you think you can still win the league title?
We have to keep on wining our games and wait for Barcelona to lose. We have to win in order to achieve our goal.
What do you think of the knockout stage against Liverpool?
Robbie Keane has left for Tottenham and his absence will be noticed. It will be a beautiful and difficult knockout stage.
How does Huntelaar feel about missing the Champions League?
It is a difficult situation. He is a great player and a phenomenal person. We have to support him and do a good job in the Champions League.
Seven’s 7
Fourteen years, 15 seasons, almost 700 matches under his belt, and as of 31 January, 307 goals scored for Real Madrid. Realmadrid.com sat down with Raul to find out which seven goals he would describe as his favorites.

1. REAL MADRID-ATLETICO MADRID (05-11-94): His first goal in Primera Division. A left footer following an assist by Laudrup.
It was an unforgettable feeling. I have been fortunate to score important goals during my career, but that goal reflected the excitement of a kid who wanted to be a footballer playing in the Bernabeu against Atletico Madrid.
2. ATLETICO MADRID-REAL MADRID (18-01-97): Raul broke the deadlock by beating Molina.
It was an important match for my career. I was in my third year with the first team, but it determined whether I’d debut with the national team. The match wasn’t going well and we were playing a man down, so to make that play and score made me feel great. I know Madridistas enjoyed it. It was the goal I wanted to score in the Calderon. The victory took us one step closer to the title.
3. REAL MADRID-VASCO DE GAMA (01-12-98): His famous lob. Raul beat two defenders and the keeper to lift Madrid to the Intercontinental Cup.
That goal was payback for everything that had happened. It was the most difficult moment of my career and the most I saw my family suffer. I also had a groin injury and my desire to play only hurt me more. That goal was payback. The waning minutes of a final and the quality that all spectators like seeing.
4. BARCELONA-REAL MADRID (13-10-99): A lob to beat Hesp and quiet the Camp Nou.
We didn’t deserve to be losing because we were playing well. It was totally spontaneous. The fans were singing and you sometimes can’t disassociate yourself from what they are saying. I was able to score and asked them to be quiet. I never meant to disrespect Barcelona or its fans.
5. REAL MADRID-VALENCIA (25-05-00): The third goal in the final of the eighth European Cup. A run that started at the top of his box and ended with the ball in the back of Cañizares’ net.
My son Jorge turned three months old that day and I wanted to dedicate it goal to him. My sister had given me a t-shirt with him on it and she told me, “Wear it because I am sure you will score.” And I did.
6. REAL MADRID-BAYERN LEVERKUSEN (15-05-02): The first goal of the ninth European Cup won by Real Madrid.
It was cheeky goal off a Roberto Carlos assist. That game will always be remembered by Zidane’s goal. I am privileged to have been his teammate and to have seen that great goal from up close.
7. REAL MADRID-BARCELONA (22-10-2006): A header three minutes in gave Real Madrid a victory over their arch rival.
Sergio Ramos’ cross was perfect. It was an important goal because the Clasico had just started. We were very focused and eager to win, so scoring early was decisive.
Raul on Cuatro
Raul talked about his beginnings as a player and his future on TV station Cuatro.

I gradually feel more passionate about football. It doesn’t bore me. I don’t think I’ll ever get tired of training, playing a game or of the sport itself. Trips are exhausting, especially when you have a family of your own. It is harder to leave when you have children, but I really enjoy myself on the pitch.
I get closer to retirment each year, but I think I can still play at the level demanded by Real Madrid for another two or three years. Following that, I will have to think about my future. I have two more years on my contract and I think I will have to start thinking about my future when the following season ends. I’m sure I will carry on playing if I feel as fit as I feel today.
It is very nice to look back and remember every team-mate and coach I’ve had, as well as all the experiences I’ve lived… This is a great club and it is a privilege to wear this shirt.
What I most remember are my beginnings. I was a kid that started to play next to idols such as Butragueño, Michel, Zamorano, Redondo, Sanchis and Buyo fresh from high school. My first years on the first team were beautiful. I was lucky to be surrounded by such great people; they made it easier for me to go through such an amazing change.
In a way, Jorge Valdano was my father in football. Capello was the coach that taught me to be more professional. Del Bosque instilled in me his knowledge and calm character. He also taught me to always behave accordingly and help my team-mates. Heynckes was the coach with which I won the Club’s seventh European Cup. Schuster was the man with whom we won a league title. Juande’s arrival has done us a lot of good.

Post-match comments
Juande Ramos admitted the team seems to find it hard to score a second goal in its matches, but he was happy with the victory. Higuain and Pepe shared their thoughts about the match with Racing when it was over.
